I'm so happy seeing Chad playing Nirvana songs! I mean let's face it even though he stayed only for 2 years. But for me Bleach era is the best Nirvana era. The punk attitude is always there.
The first three times I saw Nirvana live was with Chad and I will always have fond memories of that era of Nirvana. Thank you Chad for giving people a taste of what Nirvana was like with you on drums and remaining such a humble and down to earth guy!
And still a humble dude he is. Not at all bitter and just has a grateful attitude when interviewed about his tenure in the band and still gets his credit to this day. Good for him :)
That's not giving Chad his due. He was the drummer for NIRVANA's first album and some Nevermind songs. He got fired a year and a half before NIRVANA took over the world but he contributed a lot to NIRVANA's catalog.
He has a really good sense of melodic drumming (like Dave has also), but he's just not quite the machine that Dave is/was. His grooves sputter at times while Dave's are basically flawless and more aggressive/confident.

Yeah thought the same. Grohls distinct for being tasteful, precise and hitting very hard, which isn’t all that easy. It’s a very unique style. Channing is fine but maybe more classic rock and not consistent overall.
I always thought Chad had a raw vibe. It almost sounded like he had very little bass in the drumming or Grohl had a better drum kit, I don't know if that makes sense. I'm not a musician but I guess Grohl sounded more refined for the mainstream audience. I prefer Chad.

Not to mention Lithium, Polly was a well known Nirvana song before Nevermind came out, they were generally performing it in the "electric" version already in 1989. Stay away was called Come and Play, etc... Breed was originally called Imodium, I think that I have even heard Drain you version from 1990 performed by a drummer from the Melvins...Smells like Teen Spirit was originally recorded (but I suspect they were testing that song and Lithium already with Chad too, but Kurt was not "pleased" with his performance). So that means that 1/2 of the tabs for drums in the whole Nevermind album could have been already written by Chad and not Dave Grohl.

When I see Chad or Dave playing drums, I can easily say Nirvana was going to succeed no matter who was playing. Different styles, but chad creations were brilliant as much as Dave playing!
Not really. He isn't very good. The problem with Nirvana songs being easy to play is that it attracts a lot of half-assed musicians who never bother to progress beyond a few barre chords and don't develop an ear for music. He's not a good drummer and was fired precisely for that reason.

I love Chad.... I love that he hasn't aged, and still can play the drums just like he did back in the day. But I do wonder, if the people at this show could even hear his drums? I'm not going to lie, it does look like he's a light hitter, and in a small room like that one video on With The Lights Out (Nirvana rehearsal at Krist's mothers house), it probably sounded great there, but if even.... I completely notice and get what Kurts beef back then was about Chad not hitting the drums hard enough. Still, Krist, Dave and Pat should get Chad on board for doing reunion shows - make Dave do the guitar or something.

I see people saying Dave was a better drummer and all that and let me say this: I think they are both good drummers in their own ways. Dave Grohl has this insane power on the drums no one else possessed and was more technically skilled, while Chad created drum parts that were simple and creative. My point being: I liked them both
Chad is my fave drummer for nirvana. I think his creativity on the drum parts are under appreciated. Ive been playing drums for a while, and it's really fun playing the patterns he came up with. Some are quite challenging.

I will say Chad seems like an awesome person, and I’ve never seen him talking any shit about anybody, even though he was kicked out by Kurt because Kurt hated his drumming.
The technicality in his drumming was almost better than Dave’s in some ways. Dave as he puts is only a straight forward disco drummer besides hitting really hard and playing fast the beats are decently basic. Watching / listening to this gives me more respect for Chad Channing. Thanks for the upload wish there was more songs like this! Or is there more out there? Tbh I haven’t looked yet I just randomly found this video as it showed up in my feed.
Great version here, really sharp on the bass drum. Hes got really solid over the years and plays with more sure strength. The best version of this though was nirvana with dan Peters live in seattle and i can understand why they wanted dan peters so much.
@@nickfanzo Yep. You need to understand that playing tight does not necessarily imply being 100% on the click all the time. off-click is not autimatically sloppy or wonky. Being tight (same with so called "playing in the pocket" ) is something different, more of a feel. If you listen to albums that were recorded before the digital age/protool and all that stuff you'll notice that. Or albums that were made quick , with low budget (so was Nirvana's bleach, lots of other Punk stuff etc..). And of course in a lot of live situations: a band might be off the click, that's totally normal and human But they can still sound very tight as a unit without having that damn click in their in ears. The more precise a drummer can keep time by himself, the better of course. But it's no big news that being stuck to the click 100% creates a large amount of very boring, generic music.

The technicality in his drumming was almost better than Dave’s in some ways. Dave as he puts is only a straight forward disco drummer besides hitting really hard and playing fast the beats are decently basic. Watching / listening to this gives me more respect for Chad Channing. Thanks for the upload wish there was more songs like this! Or is there more out there? Tbh I haven’t looked yet I just randomly found this video as it showed up in my feed.
Great version here, really sharp on the bass drum. Hes got really solid over the years and plays with more sure strength. The best version of this though was nirvana with dan Peters live in seattle and i can understand why they wanted dan peters so much.

@@nickfanzo Yep. You need to understand that playing tight does not necessarily imply being 100% on the click all the time. off-click is not autimatically sloppy or wonky. Being tight (same with so called "playing in the pocket" ) is something different, more of a feel.
If you listen to albums that were recorded before the digital age/protool and all that stuff you'll notice that. Or albums that were made quick , with low budget (so was Nirvana's bleach, lots of other Punk stuff etc..).
And of course in a lot of live situations: a band might be off the click, that's totally normal and human
But they can still sound very tight as a unit without having that damn click in their in ears.
The more precise a drummer can keep time by himself, the better of course. But it's no big news that being stuck to the click 100% creates a large amount of very boring, generic music.

best drummer ever in my opinion and bleach is one of my favorite albums i think they chose dave for his voice then kurt had regret about it later
They chose Dave because he was a better drummer. He didn't sing live on a lot of tracks -- that's why they brought in Pat Smear.
