  • Part of the "Northern Tales" DVD. This is a story from Jarrow in the Northeast of England about St.Bede. I have a large collection of stories that originate from the north and they cover; monsters, witches, imps, border warfare, castles and kings.

    Tony:
In each of your works of art storytelling you awaken memories, and fantastic landscapes which bring into being a new way of seeing the world, and, yes, healing even brokenness and sorrows unmended except through the extreme care and mindfulness that only poetry and the work of art can begin to mend.
    Thank you,
    Richard

The story came from a book published in 1945 with a collection called Northern Tales. It was given to me as a birthday present about 12 years ago. It is a good littel read.

I know a different version of the story how st. Bede became known as Venerable. One of Bede's students was trying to write an epitaph for his teachers grave, he had a hard time comming up with a word that would complete the sentence "Hac sunt in fossa, Bedae ...... ossa". He fell asleep over the parchment, and when he woke up he found out that the word "Venerabilis" was written in the blank space, hence the epitaph was "Hac sunt in fossa, Bedae Venerabilis ossa" - "Here lie the bones of Venerable Bede"

I am from the North east of England and lived in Leeds for 17 years so it's a mixture of 'Geordie' Northeast and trying to make myself understood.
    Thanks for the comments.

Would you happen to know where this story came from? Is it a local story or is it from a written life of Saint Bede?
