In this new comedy adventure, celebrated travel writer, Bill Bryson (Academy Award winner Robert Redford), instead of retiring to enjoy his loving and beautiful wife (Academy Award winner Emma Thompson), and large and happy family, challenges himself to hike the Appalachian Trail - 2,200 miles of America’s most unspoiled, spectacular and rugged countryside from Georgia to Maine. The peace and tranquility he hopes to find, though, is anything but, once he agrees to being accompanied by the only person he can find willing to join him on the trek - his long lost and former friend Katz (Academy Award nominee Nick Nolte), a down-on-his-luck serial philanderer who, after a lifetime of relying on his charm and wits to keep one step ahead of the law - sees the trip as a way to sneak out of paying some debts and sneak into one last adventure before its too late. The trouble is, the two have a completely different definition of the word, “adventure”. Now they're about to find out that when you push yourself to the edge, the real fun begins.

i love this movie and can watch it over and over and not get sick of it. Reading the book now
I just love this film , it’s optimism, wackiness and the revival of an old friendship !
Very pared down from the book, but still a gem of a movie. I never pictured Nolte as Katz, but I'll be damned if he didn't absolutely nail that role! If only it had been a bit more faithful to the book. Still, I loved it, and watched it many times.
I agree..its entertaining but they left out most of the endearing bits
Kristen Schaal's character is a highlight of this movie. She fulfills the role of *most annoying hiking companion* perfectly. She was also great in the HBO series "Flight of the Conchords".
They didnt use the Twinkie bit which was very disappointing
As I’ve been ‘ dying ‘ of cancer for the last 8 years but just keep on going and despite everything have never had as much fun in my life so I just love the optimism of this film. As I say to people in the waiting room of my hospital when I’m reading the Miles Kington ‘ Franglais ‘ books, if I don’t die of cancer first , I’ll just die laughing ! 😂😂😂

First readed the book, was well entertained, have many laughed. The film has the story perfekt performed. Nick Nolte and Robert Redford are ther right actors for it.

First problem, the leads were way too old to play the parts. Second, some of the book’s content was there, but not the book’s spirit.

Bill was about 42 when he walked the AT, Robert Redford and Nick Nolte were way too old to take the parts of Bill and Katz, but Redford bought the rights and that was that. The movie only covers the first half of the book, which I suppose was OK as the second half dragged on somewhat.

@@shell1493 Like many 'true' doco type movies, truth is often the first thing that is removed from the story line, Bill was 42 when he walked the AT, Robert Redford was in his late 70s when he filmed the movie. Surely an actor of the right age was available?

If she is maybe too pretty a plainer woman though more likely a mate for Bryson would not be as charming.
She is just way to much being Emma T.
