    It has become a yearly tradition to watch over the garden wall every fall

    So in case Scoot reads these comments, or in case someone is still out of the loop, here's a short but clear answer to the ending:
    This whole series isn't actually a "dream" in the traditional sense. By falling down into the icy water, Wart and Greg went into a coma due to extreme frostbite, because of this, both their minds and their bodies were fighting to stay alive. The forest they were in could therefore be considered *Limbo*, a state of being between life and death, with the Best representing the Grim Reaper trying to get them to give up and die. That is why Wart, who gave up hope of getting out, almost turned into a tree and died, while the forever positive Greg was fine until he almost sacrificed himself.

      yeah I always felt that the snowstorm slowly setting in towards the end was actually the hypothermia from the water

    I keep seeing people say purgatory or limbo, but they were straight up in hell. Two poets, one in a red hat, journeying through 7 levels, a woman named Beatrice, a Beast at the center of a frozen lake of dispair. This is a straight up retelling of Dante's Inferno.

    • @DomR1997
      @DomR1997 Před 16 dny

      It wouldn't be a very good allegory for hell. It makes far more sense as a limbo story heavily inspired by Dantes Inferno, or perhaps a retelling/repurposing of Dantes Inferno where Dante travels through Limbo rather than hell. Regardless, the hell hypothesis falls flat when you consider the show in totality.

    The woodsman ending i think symbolizes how the things we do "for" our children usually prevent u from being with them, which he did for how long, dayum

    That bit where the Beast tells Greg to just sit there in the cold and wait is honestly one of the most haunting moments I've seen put to animation

    • @drosellie2850
      @drosellie2850 Před rokem +14

      Fr tho! One of my favorite symbolisms for death is the one of cold and sleeping. Sleeping while in very cold temperatures can actually kill you, because your heartbeat decreases and with that, the speed at wich blood (wich is what distributes heat) goes to the rest of your body, eventually killing you by hypotermia. It's such a subtle way of indicating death without outright stating it.
      If we add this to the symbolism of the Beast as grief giving up, it's just perfect. The Beast is actively searching to make lost souls give up to turn them into trees, and when he's not able to do that with Greg, he proposes the sacrifice thing, making Greg give himself up to become a tree, meanwhile the Beast just tells him to wait, and even sleep, in the cold. It's so morbid and heartbreaking and ultimately, amazing to me.

    the irony of the woodsman being the one lost in the woods while his daughter was waiting for him back home the whole time...

    • @ivanelugo
      @ivanelugo Před rokem +1

      Maybe the woodsman was trapped because the beast and his daughter was on the afterlife already, so when he killed the beast he went to the afterlife and reunited with his daughter

      @@ivanelugo the unknown is an afterlife/limbo of sorts already. dont double-dead the damn characters to try and make it darker. the series is messed up enough man.

    that the bell chimes just before wirt realises that doing what the beast says is stupid is SUCH a big deal for me like?? was that a wake up call, allowing him to recognise what the beast is doing? is it a sign for the audience that something is wrong? does anything that happens after the chime actually happen or is it just what we WANT to happen? does that mean that The Frog saves the day, since the bell is in The Frog? what does it mean that The Frog still has the bell in him after greg and wirt wake up?
    all those things make this something of a modern fairy tale to me and along with "why turtles??" makes me question the series every time i think about it lol

  • @min0uet
    @min0uet Před rokem +5

    there's a comic explaining the situation w the woodsman's daughter, but even without that there's clues in the show as to what happened. the woodsman was never able to bring himself to go back to his house after thinking he lost his daughter- the beast asks him if he's really ready to go back in chapter 10 implying he hasn't been there in a long time, probably bc of grief. in chapter 1 he was actually living at the mill, which is a different place entirely. meanwhile his daughter was living in his old house, each not knowing what happened to the other, and when the woodsman finally returned he found her waiting there.

  • @yogurt8150

    i think generally this show is best seen when you view it as a sort of modern fairy tale. there is a surface meaning throughout the story, that once you understand it, makes it easier to fit the sub-stories into the narrative. and of course theres a bunch of little things that tie the stories together.
    like the gravestones greg and wirt were hiding behind, belonged to the tea-company owners. the song beatrices mother (s voice actress) sings "one is a bird, two are the trees, three is the wind in the leaves" being beatrice, greg and wirt and the beast respectively. and in the beginning wirt and greg "not being quite ready" to join the pumpkin people could easily reference them being in between life and death (considering only old people are considered close to death usually)... the edelwood trees having faces and the beasts body seemingly being made of trees with faces...
    theres so much to keep you thinking about it and tbh i think thats why rewatching it is so rewarding. not only is it a fun show you can easily watch in one or two sittings, every time you watch it you have the chance to discover or rediscover something you hadnt thought of before
    thank you for reacting to it, im glad you enjoyed it! i think its even better on a rewatch but that might just be me lmao

    Just putting this out there if you're brainstorming more cartoons to eventually watch, I think you would have a riot watching the new Ninja Turtle show, Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on Netflix. it's wholesome, action packed, the animation is WILD good, and I think the humour would be right up your alley >:)
