    I know just how you felt yesterday, 1546ft of climbing in 40 miles. Cafe stop at 35 miles in as the ride was supposed to be 50+, but then the heavens opened so we took the short cut home instead of pushing on. On the plus side though, I have recently upgraded from the old Dawes Giro to a new Trek Domane AL2 and those North Yorkshire hills are getting easier 😁

    • @petertreadway
      @petertreadway  Před 2 měsíci +2

      That’s some serious elevation, Alex! That’ll take its toll!
      We had some some heavy rain this morning too (despite the forecast being clear 🙄). Sadly, it was before the cafe stop though, so we pushed on.
      Sod’s Law dictated that it stopped raining as we ate, then started again as we set off home, only to be greeted by the clouds parting as I arrived back in my garden and the most glorious day of sunshine ensued! 🤦🏻‍♂️

      @@petertreadway definitely sod's law. One of my 'lovely friends' has now suggested I give the proper hills a go, starting next month with a gentle 2 mile average climb of 5.4%, maxing at 15.4%... Pray for me, as there's about a 15 ish mile hilly ride to get there 🤣🤣

    Well played Mr Treadwell a lesson for us all. I have just come home from a week's camping on the Emerald coast in Brittany. Fantastic riding , I went out at 7.30 each day so I was back 9ish to make my wife's breakfast and spend the day with her. Back home in Manche now, knackered.

    You have to be carful with fasting. What you eat before and after the fasts are really important. If you eat carbs in your last meal before fasting then you'll find it difficult, and if you have carbs to break the fast you could have too much of a spike as you're really insulin sensitive.
    With regards to the fasted rides, your body needs to become fat adapted to be able to properly use fat.
    When I first started cycling I couldn't even do 20 miles without nearly bonking. But after two years of fasting.....2 - 3 full days at a time, my body was so efficient at using fat I was able to do 40 mile rides half way through and carry on fasting for another day afterwards. It's also important to stick to zone 2 when fasted riding, as zone 3 and above will start to use glucose.
    In one 3 day fast I even got a KOM on a 40 mile ride, and still felt full of energy.
    On my non fasting days I ate my normal amount. It sounds like you're also cutting calories on non fasting days which I definitely wouldn't recommend.

    • @petertreadway
      @petertreadway  Před 2 měsíci

      Good tips, Mark. I've been intermittent fasting for a good few years now, so have largely got the fasted exercising and nutrition down and this was thankfully a one off silly mistake. Always good to review what could be improved though. 👌

      You're right, Peter. I mean, thankfully this is the first (and hopefully only) time this has happened to me and purely because I was trying to push the fasting period, so fingers crossed I don't make the mistake again! 👌

    Hi Peter , I used to keep a Mars bar in my saddle bag for emergencies, but if I fancied chocolate and their was none in the house I would raid my saddle bag!!!!! So now I keep 3 emergency fig rolls in tiny zip bag, I don’t like fig rolls so I never raid the saddlebag, but I’m guessing they would be amazing if I got stuck for food on a ride. All the best the old man from G D Fell

    A bit 'horse has bolted' I know Peter, but I don't leave for any ride without an energy bar and a gel on me (my preferred bar is Veloforte - not cheap but they've got the right mix of what you need).

    Holy moly, you were doing those late night Zwift intervals whilst fasting?! You are a tough cookie Mr Treadway, kudos to you!
    I was worrying a bit about my weight affecting my cycling after piling on the pounds last year but then I had a play around with the bike calculator (google it if you haven't come across it already) and was surprised to see that a few extra kg really doesn't make much difference for anything but the longest sustained climbs (which we don't have in the UK). Watts and nutrition make a much bigger difference for the average cyclist.
    Also as I understand it, losing a lot of weight in a short time is mainly water weight unfortunately. Glycogen requires a lot of water to be stored so you can basically understand quick weight loss being a direct measure of how much you have depleted your stores of glycogen which obviously isn't ideal for cyclists!
    I'm still trying to watch what I eat off the bike but that is more because of all the processed carb I eat on the bike (sugar, maltodextrin) and I want to give my gut a rest when I can. And yes, I'd still like to lose a bit of fat around the belly but honestly it's more about vanity re wearing unforgiving Lycra than cycling performance!

    • @petertreadway
      @petertreadway  Před 2 měsíci +1

      The evening rides weren’t too bad. The later morning/midday ones were the real test, having not eaten since the night before. You do get used to it though.
      Although, I’ve found that by eating right (lots of plants, seeds and whole foods) during your non fasted periods, as opposed to ultra processed stuff, you can lose weight while gaining lean muscle (especially while training).
      It’s not always easy though.
