@@nsasupporter7557 you know what, I 100% agree with you! Your assessment is definitely not wrong and you are 100% spot on! However, I don’t want to toot my horn, but I think this movie may be an exception to your rule. Tim Burton brought all the original writers who actually had been on a hiatus since like the late 90s and haven’t really been interested in all of this “new woke writing”. Even when this “Ortega“ girl auditioned for this position, they asked her 100 questions she said in her interview. The questions were mainly geared towards “does this make you feel offended?“ of which she said that “ nothing offended her“ and even had to sign a document stating that she agrees to the material. Tim Burton even said an interview “although Beetlejuice the sequel was not our original plan back in 1988, I think it’s about time society gets a new dose of Beetlejuice with the same effects as what we brought in the 80s“. According to an interview by Michael Keaton, he said that the movie Beetlejuice 2 is if the Exorcist, Conjuring, Joe Dirt, Johnny Depp, and Quintin Tarantino had a love child and that child met Jack the Pumpkin King and had a baby. That’s the new Beetlejuice.
I read the preliminary script of Beetlejuice 2, and I can tell you this, Keaton didn’t hold anything back! I’m surprised it’s rated PG-13 and not R to be honest.
I don’t want to spoil it for anybody, but Lydia Deetz (an older version of the weird Lydia from the 88 movie, still dark) and her rebellious daughter, Astrid Deetz. Who is less darker than the younger Lydia, come back to Winter Hill, Connecticut because of the death of Lydia’s father, Charles (remember the father from the original who just wanted peace and quiet in the countryside?) he dies right off screen.
We got a quick synopsis on the events on what was happening between 1988 to 2024 and within those 35 years the upper middle class Deetz family lived happily with the Maitlands ghost after the events of the original.
Lydia obviously graduated high school, and went off to college and eventually moved out of the Winter Hill home and went on with her life. I’m not 100% sure from the script, but they do go off on a quick background of Lydia and what she ended up doing in life, and it has something to do with photography For Hollywood believe it or not. I didn’t know she was into photography, brush up on the first movie back in 1988, I remember she was always walking around with a Polaroid camera. So although the script I read was heavily redacted on discord, something along the lines of a professional Hollywood photographer. in California, Lydia met a fellow who is also in the arts and is equally dark, etc., by a new face. Anyway, they hook up at some point and she has a kid. The kids name is Astrid Deetz taking the name of her mother since the father supposedly passed away prior to Astrid’s birth. Since Lydia and he were never married, the viewer assumes that Astrid took her mother’s last name.
During Lydia’s life of becoming a grown woman and mother and successful photographer, her parents, who were of the Rich upper middle class, remained in that home throughout the decades. The viewer is to know that they actually had a kinship with the ghost couple Maitland Through throughout these decades.
As I was reading, it looks like the Maitland, completed a lot of thresholds in the afterlife where they were no longer denied to move on. If you remember from the first one, Argentina in the waiting room of purgatory or the neither world, tells them that they “need to spend 125 years at their original home , because of something they did “, the script explains that the Maitlands we’re no longer tied to the house in essentially just stayed there until Lydia moved out since they had such a great rapport with the family. The script explains that the Maitland cross over to the other side, which was “heaven“ after Lydia left home. We see that their punishment of 125 years bounded to the home eliminated after they swapped out Beetlejuice. Beetlejuice is in that same waiting room in the original at the very end. Remember, he swapped the ticket out with number four and his head grew smaller anyway the Maitland were actually at the home on their own free and they could either pass to the next side or chill in the afterlife for a little while.
I digress, anyway, Charles Deetz dies of a heart attack, and Lydia is called back home by her stepmother, the one and only Delia Deetz, of which the funeral arrangements, etc. She calls Lydia and tells her the death of her father was eminent, Lydia leaves with her daughter from California to Connecticut, where they are too late and Charles is dead. Is arranged and we get a huge glimpse of the dark Tim Burton type of movie.
Somewhere along the lines, Astrid Deetz gets a little restless, and starts wandering around this huge home. The home seems a lot bigger within its interior and has been remodeled by the Deetz throughout the decades. The home is very nice with an open bar, and completely modernized almost mansion. Everything within the state of the art, and we see some stuff that obviously the Maitland help them with, giving a nod to the original.
Everything has been renovated over and over except the attic. Delia mentions to Lydia that the attic has not been touched since the 80s, since that night. She explains to Lydia that the Maitland one night, bid both her and Charles goodbye and good luck, and although , they begged the Maitland to stay, they had to leave to pass over to the other side and promised they will visit every now and again. The Maitland aren’t completely gone in the sequel and supposedly Delia, as well as Lydia can talk to them through a mirror and Delia‘s room. Delia then explains to Lydia that they walked up to the basement, they heard a couple of shuffles, and they were gone. They covered the entire model town, put some lacquer on it, and basically locked the attic. Delia explains to Lydia that “ only the pest control people have been up in that room, and they’re only up there for a brief second“.
Basically, the narrator explains within the script that the deeds family have not been up in that attic for decades, unless they absolutely had to get something. Therefore, the entire layout, including where the Maitland left, still remains in place.
Although again the script was heavily redacted, Astrid is restless, and does something that awakens the model town of which she releases Beetlejuice. Through instructions given to her on one of the old school TVs that turns on and shows an old style 90s 80s type of infomercial with the one and only Beetlejuice, just like he did in the first one with his whole cowboy bit.

So many unnecessary sequels these days that are butchering the original movies… Star Wars, the Jurassic movies etc. and what makes it worse is all of these dumb fans mindlessly wanting more sequels 🤦♂️
Danny Elfmans' score is just as much a main character as Beetlejuice is!

I was kind of sad to learn that in Brazil/where I live, the film will have a different title. Since in Brazil, the title of the first film is "Beetlejuice - Os fantasmas se divertem" or "Beetlejuice - Ghosts Have Fun", and the second, will inherit the same title, being: "Beetlejuice - Os fantasmas AINDA se divertem" And in English: "Beetlejuice - the ghosts STILL have fun" instead of "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice"... But really, a sequence completing the last Beetlejuice film being a reference to how he is summoned would be really cool."

Ah yes the maitlands. I wouldve said they went to heaven or something since they had to live at the house for 125 years but there’s no way THAT much time has passed cause then Lydia wouldn’t be living. I’m very curious to know what they come up with.

There’s so much you could do with the storyline! This movie created Tim Burton‘s entire career! Especially with his nightmare before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, and his numerous animations such as the “beetle, gals“ and Jack the pumpkin king. Beetlejuice was the main concept to all of these characters. However, most of the idea was created from the mind of the one and only Michael Keaton. And the original script, believe it or not Tim Burton went with the writer of the original Beetlejuice, which was not even a comedy but a straight horror flick. Beetlejuice was a bio exorcist as he is in the original obviously, but he is a Murderous demon who possesses people and even tries to have relations with younger girls in the book, he comes to life as a Middle Eastern looking midget? They couldn’t put this in a movie so they had to revamp the script and re-create first the main character “Beetlejuice“ he threw some ideas around and kind of left the same striped suit that the original horror character had. However, they wanted to make it look like he’s been dead for an unspecified long, duration, we are he makes references that he “lived through the black plague“ which will tell the viewer that Beetlejuice died somewhere between or before the 15th century. You probably gained all the education of being hip, and learning how to speak more, modern, simply by, studying the living throughout his afterlife. He also makes references that he’s really not from America, but from Europe or from the Middle Eastern countries, which were covered with the black plague during the 15th century. But they kept racial undertones, and his background kind of wrapped up. instead of having Middle Eastern looking eyes which looked kind of racist, instead they wanted black rings around the eyes to make it look like he was dead for a long time and mold around his face to show that he’s been rotting even in the afterlife. He’s been dead for so long, although he is probably physically “bio” dust, or even a skeleton or a fossil, in the afterlife he has been deceased for so long it’s even showing signs of deterioration in the afterlife.
i really hope this movie works. and i'll be praying for a sequel!
