What Happened to Darkwing Duck (1991-92)?

- I love cartoons. Specifically cartoon series from the 80's and 90’s. Whenever someone asks me what my favorite childhood cartoon is, I always say there are two. The first is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and the second is Darkwing Duck. I was the biggest fan of the masked mallard, and who wouldn't be? He was brave, smart, egotistical, and accident-prone but would persevere against evil. He had a killer costume and cool equipment to fight bad guys. He had an awesome rogue’s gallery that was a bit of a joke but also surprisingly formidable. The cartoon was also not afraid to show its love for classic superhero comics at a time when the general public didn't understand it. It even broke through the Iron Curtain at the height of the Cold War. But does this cartoon from the early 90's still hold up? Is it a silly animated series that is now a chore to watch, or is it still the incredible show I remember? Well, as Darkwing would say, “Let’s get dangerous” in this episode of Gone But Not Forgotten.

Hey guys!
This episode of GBNF was made from suggestions from fans who emailed us demanding this show be covered on this series. If you want to make suggestions for future episodes of GBNF then e-mail GBNFSeries@gmail.com and maybe we’ll cover your show!
they should have made a howard the duck marvel movie and tied in DarkWing Duck as a character to start a live action/animated crossover.
Good unexpected video, oddly nostalgic. I still remember that song, and the cartoon vaguely. It always came on after what I was watching (tiny tunes I believe) Just like the song to Tale-Spin lol. I swear I remember another duck cartoon replacing DW Duck.
*Idk if you have or not, but maybe an episode on The Tick?
One of my favorite aspects of Darkwing Duck is that he was neither too competent (Like Batman) or too incompetent (Like Inspector Gadget). He was often outclassed by the bad guys and begrudgingly needed help from others, but he mostly knew how to do his thing, and for most issues he can do it alone.
As a batman fan I knew he was inspired by the Shadow as as Darkwing duck
It's great that Darkwing Duck still gets attention it deserves. I'm in my forties and still enjoy the show. I collected the toys back in the day also. Long live Darkwing Duck.
I actually said “let’s get dangerous” to Jim Cummings at a convention one time, He liked it. Cross one off the bucket list 🤪👍🏻✅
I need better bucket list ideas. Respect!
Should’ve said “suck gas evil doer!”
One of my heros is Jim Cumming. Search his name and cichlid. You'll see why I was confused at first 😂😂
He visited my town once, but I didn't get a chance to see him. I did, however, go to a similar fan event at the same location and got to meet Felix Silla (Cousin Itt on "The Addams Family"), Doug Jones (THE SHAPE OF WATER) and Sid Haig (THE DEVIL'S REJECTS).
I literally grew up with Jim Cummings. One of the very first TV shows I remember watching was "Dumbo's Circus" on the Disney Channel. Cummings voiced Lionel, the Brooklyn-accented carnival barker. I think that was his first major role for Disney.
Haha i,m from the Netherlands and we had the Dutch dub… and there was the phrase “Laten we lekker link gaan doen “ used that a lot when i was young
As an 80's baby, I can tell you that Darkwing Duck was my favorite.
Yes, mine too
As a fellow gen-X kid I loved Darkwing Duck however my favorite Disney Afternoon cartoon was TaleSpin.
Darkwing has a better rogues gallery than some of the DC and Marvel heroes
Loved your video
thanks
i literally can't even think of how I would name my favorite cartoon from the 80s and 90s. Too many amazing ones.
Many greats. Transformers, Thundercats, dungeons and dragons, and many more😂
One of the main cartoons I looked forward to on Disney as a kid.
Mine too such a great cartoon
same
This was such a great show! I remember watching it and also reading the comic books that were running in parallel! Great times.
One of my most beloved shows back when i was a child
same
i want more Darkwing Duck
Darkwing Duck: We want Darkwing! We want Darkwing!
Oh hellz yeah! I remember Darkwing Duck!! All of us '90s kids do! Loved everything about the series, especially the new jack swing style theme song! Also loved the NES game. Man that brings back memories! I'm proud to hear that they are trying to reboot it. That's a reboot i would actually support. That & an ALF reboot. Also, that kick ass theme song to Denver the Last Dinosaur, lived rent free, in my head, for decades, & i did love the series.
What a pleasant surprise, Darkwing Duck is one of my absolute favorite shows from my childhood
same
I remember the Disney afternoon commercials that would come on during DuckTales, Rescue Rangers, etc
Darkwing was in the background even though we had no idea who he was. When we finally saw his show... It was worth it!
An absolute classic of a show. I loved Darkwing! Theme song is a banger! Remember when TGIF premiered it on primetime FRIDAY?! Good times. I loved the Fearsome Five...my fave episode is when they get the gem and NegaDuck has all their powers.
Games were great too (except maybe that TG16 one).
Darkwing Duck is my favorite 90s animated cartoon(I’ve been binge watching it recently, I fell asleep watching Darkwing Duck last night & I wake up today & this Video popped up into my recommendations) being a 90s kid was definitely a special time for me during my childhood.
_The Shadow_ is still a favorite of mine, I remember my cousin _Markus_ having all of _The Shadow_ toys & when he & I teamed up with our own separate collection of toys for a war of the cartoon worlds was so memorable.
_Nega Duck_ is my favorite Darkwing Duck Villain, _Steelbeak_ is a strong 2nd.
My Uncle, _Demetrius Harvey_ (rest in peace) sung the Darkwing Duck theme song.
I want Season 3 released on DVD!!
Darkwing Duck was an awesome series, I have them all recorded on VHS which are probably crap now. I would love if they did a reboot like Ducktales which was surprisingly well done.
i used to watch it in Russia in the 90s. The translations were even better than the original! And not just for DW but for all the cartoons we've got - DT, CnD, GB, Tailspin, and so on. They would air it every sunday in the morning. Kids loved it! I surely did.
❤ this as a Kid in the 90's
Disney was imaginative in making greatness of animation, television shows, a Disney Channel
and more importantly, style like no other. Darkwing Duck is a prime example of my childhood.
Love live DW.
This, Freakazoid, and the Tick are my holy trinity of comic book satire cartoons.
Darkwing Duck was my favorite cartoon to watch growing up. When Funko released the Darkwing pops I bought all of them.
Cartoons back then was sooo good and it lives on forever in our hearts and memories especially when the theme song hits..
I will have to break down and watch newest Darkwing episodes you mentioned but the animation style I just can’t take. lol I will fight to look past it.
Christine Cavanaugh passing was a real gut punch. She was the first voice actress I ever knew of and I thought she and Cree Summer were the best.
I always thought he looked like Golden Age Sandman because Darkwing uses a gas gun from time to time like Dodds does and Darkwing's bill stick sout like Sandman's gas mask
For YEARS I wondered how the name Darkwing Duck originated. I'm glad my question was finally answered.
Ducktales and Darkwing Duck were must see TV!
I'm an '80s kid and this video just restored my childhood. Thanks guys 😊❤
Darkwing felt way more mature than Chip and Dale and Ducktales. Even though I was very young I appreciated it more.
I never expected a Darkwing Duck episode. One if my favorites as a kid. Thanks, Jesse.
And David who spent weeks writing and editing the episode…:just saying
@@Arroyo2099 I said what I said
My friend had a bunch of the DD toys and Freakazoid merch, vivid memory
" When your in trouble you call DW....DARK WING DUCK!!!"
I remember when my school had coloring pictures of darkwing duck during free time.
Still watch cartoons from my childhood. And darkwing duck is one of my favorites.
Man that show was my jam, I remember every episode you just brought up even though have not seen them since I was a child.
I missed all those references to hero’s at the time. So thank you for pointing them out to me.
I've always been a huge fan of Dee Dubbya!
I used to always change my mind on the question of who is my favorite super hero.
Until some years ago I realized Darkwing Duck is my favorite, and probably always will be.
LET'S GET DANGEROUS
Part of my afternoon line up in the 90s along woth Goof Troop and Batman the animated series
Agree on Denver theme song. I hear it and it’s stuck in my head for days.
I'm 100% with you about the Denver the Last Dinosaur. Can't stand the show but that theme song is gold!
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed Darkwing Duck's similarity to The Shadow.👍 Also, I unironically say "let's get dangerous" any time I feel the need to psych myself up for something.
He fell on hard times and was forced to take roles in adult films.
And now living it up in the sewers lol
cartoons from the 80s & 90s kicked ass, how i miss those days
One Of Favorite Cartoons Growing Up In The 90's Let's Get Dangerous
Finally someone pointed out Darkwing Duck is more The Shadow than Batman, the villains on the other hand, definitely mostly inspired by Batman‘s rogues gallery (and a little Spider-Man)
You should probably make a video about what happened to tiny toons, I was also wondering about why the successful tiny toons from the 90s didn’t came back after all these years!
This made me smile ear to ear
“Let’s Get Dangerous!”
man i remember morning cartoons and disney afternoon at 3pm 😢
Seeing the dark wing duck episode must have inspired the writers of Superman TAS to make the brave new metropolis episode where Superman allies with Lex Luthor and becomes a tyrant. He goes evil after Lois is killed in his universe.
Darkwing duck is a CLASSIC.
I loved all these cartoons.
The amount of songs currently stuck in my head would fill a Saturday morning
Dark Warrior Duck episode must have inspired a writer on Superman Animated series. The episode Brave New Metropolis has Lois go to Alternate dimension and where she died and Superman joined Luthor and became an enforcer and was very stick like Dark Warrior.
I wouldn't consider the early 99's "Height of the Cold War" lol
Still watch it now with talespin and cats and company 😂
I'm in Canada and when I checked last year I can confirm "Hot Spells" was not offered on Disney+ either. I have it on VHS somewhere, at least. Not my favourite episode but still it'd be nice to have the whole series offered to the fans.
I too love the Gummy Bears and Denver the last dinosaur theme songs! And that time travel episode!
You say Darkwing Duck went into syndication in Soviet Union, but the Soviet Union colapsed in the first year it came out and the Cold War was already over.
darkwing duck is one of my favorite shows EVER, found this show on disney+ during quarantine and ive loved it ever since :) too bad not many ppl my age know about this show though (im 16)
Nega duck and the liquidator were my favorite villains.
Had a poster of dark wing duck as a kid always enjoyed it a very huge part of my childhood great 👍 review
Awesome video
Definitely gonna revisit some of the episodes
How bout do a Face off between DWD and Duck Dodgers
Lol
Loved that show when I was a kid :)
FINALLY someone giving The Shadow his due for Darkwing
I remember always watching this and TMNT at my babysitters house in 1990. But my favorite was Ghostbusters.
Definitely still one of my favorite cartoons 😊
This was one of my staple shows as a kid. I got a lot of the toys, but they were cheap and broke apart easily. I had to do much toy surgery on them with superglue.
I hope Darkwing Duck gets a reboot In the future. Maybe this year maybe the next.
My man Jesse talking about one of my favorite comic books I owned as I kid - best send off for 2023!
He didn’t write it
still love Darkwing, and now so does my three year old. Let's get dangerous.
The nostalgia is strong in this one. 😻
I was 15 when DW first aired, and even as a teenager I couldn't wait to see new episodes. Right beside the Gummi Bears (and others) it's one of my favorites cartoons of all evers!
I'm 47 now, and sitting here watching this I find I have to wipe my eyes (in a GOOD way) just from the sheer amount of emotion attached to those memories. I'm a fairly new addition to your channel but I can't express how much I LOVES this "not forgotten" series you do. It truly means a lot. Thank you 😻
(Also, you mentioned Sliders! In my Top 5! Going watch that next!)
Did you ever (or would you) do Misfits of Science???
Oops! I didn't see the email notice in the pinned comment until after I had posted! 🙀
Writing an email RIGHT NOW! 😅
Darkwing Duck was my favorite show as a kid too! I loved watching it and a few years ago I met Jim Cummings at a con and after thanking him for essentially helping to voice my childhood I told him that I loved Darkwing Duck and still did (I mentioned a few other roles of his I loved too but Darkwing was first lol) and he said...in Darkwing's voice... "Why thank you, Gosalyn" I was beaming and just felt like you could have knocked me over with a feather in that moment.
I loved loved loved Darkwing Duck when i was kid it was Chip N Dale Talespin then Darkwing Duck best 3 show lineup ever
I'm a little surprised you didn't also mention how the show kinda predicted the landmark 'No Man's Land' Batman-arc as well! And if I hadn't COMPLETELY lost faith in Disney, I'd say "this needs a movie NOW!!" =)
"The Masked Mallard" didn't influence anything. Tad has said he never even saw that episode.
Loved the show, I even wore a Darkwing Duck Halloween costume in the 3rd grade. won best costume!!!! I also had every DwD toy ever made. 🤣🤣🤣🤣
People don't know otatop is potato backwards. Darkwing duck fans do.
I love Negaduck and evil variants of superheroes in general.
DuckWing Duck has always been my gamertag. I hope we do get more of he who flaps in the night. #wewantdarkwing
My favorite episode is the one with the time traveling top and the judge dredd version of DW. I haven't forgotten it in decades.
Edit you cover it... Oh well but yeah best episode.
This and Gargoyles were my Disney jams growing up in the 90's. Before Pokemon there was Darkwing Duck.
I rewatched the entire run on Disney+ and it was still great to me.
The Shadow lives through Audiobooks. They're great!
Check out Haley Joel Osment’s screen test with Tom Hanks where he talks about Darkwing Duck to Hanks.
I had the tape with the Taurus bulba episode and watched it damn every day for years
Wow that guy has one hell of a voice acting career
Dark wing Duck was like Disney take on Batman which was exactly cool for the time period.Even Michael Moore Robot Chicken take is so hilarious and scary at the same time.😄😵😢
I dont know why... but the Episode where he got split into his Good and Bad version... never left me.
That is an Episode that, even now, comes to mind once in a while.
I said when the ducktales reboot ended darkwing your next and i stand by it
I forgot about that show but I loved it one of my favorites
It sucks that the description of everything that Disney wasn’t is now the description of everything it is.
I remember having dark wing duck action figures. I don't remeber if they were from McDonald's happy meals or from a toy store
I really liked The Shadow movie. Okay, part of that love is my love for underdog movies, but I think its sad that its a bit of a forgotten one. Its a good watch and it has Tim Curry in it (as a villain of course) and his death scene makes me laugh every time. Its worth a watch if you have never seen it. If you are looking for other forgotten movies based on the proto superhero era, The Phantom movie is worth a watch too. Its not going to win any awards but I had a good time watching it with my dad who is a huge fan of the comics.
I watched this show as a kid as one of the few if not the only in my area and it got me ostracized so bad. Reason being darkwing spoke with a higher vocabulary than 90% of shows playing at the time, vocabulary which I picked up. So there I was five or six using college level language and understanding it. Needless to say it freaked out everyone around me. Wouldn’t change it for a thing though. Darkwing duck best cartoon ever.
I've been singing the Denver the Last Dinosaur theme song for over 30 years. Don't remember a single character
Batman already has a kid that won’t stay home Robin or actually a couple cause there were a lot of Robins.
One of my fav as a lil child
We are actually getting a reboot ofnthisbshlw😂
I remember this cartoon, watched it on the Disney channel.
I think the inspiration for Darkwing Duck was Darkman, the vigilante character who first appeared in a 1990 live action film. Obviously Darkman drew inspiration from the Shadow in terms of costume design. However, Darkman would have been the most recent reference to draw from around the time Darkwing Duck was being developed. The Shadow was an obscure DC comics character who first appeared in the 1970s. The popularity of Darkman and Darkwing Duck is what led to the Shadow getting a live action movie in 1994.
Wow you are completely wrong. The Shadow was a pulp character from the 1940s. Tad Stones also confirmed that the Shadow was the inspiration not to mention that the shadow and Zorro had an influence in Batman’s creation
