Ensemble Amsterdam Sinfonietta, led by violinist Candida Thompson, play 'Battalia à 10' by Italian composer Heinrich Ignaz Biber in concert hall TivoliVredenburg in Utrecht. The concert is part of the series AVROTROS Vrijdagconcert.
Violin virtuoso Biber was responsible for many big changes in violin play and music. His works are full of freedom, bravery and expression. His ‘Battalia à 10’ (battalia is Italian for ‘fight’) is a musical imitation of the war, inspired by folk music. The piece asks for extreme expression and marvellous techniques.

I'm always astonished when I come back to hear Candida's company of musicians play this wonderful piece. There ought to be at least a million views. I suppose with all the junk music around, that says something about how unadventurous most listeners can be.

Heinrich Ignaz Biber is hardly Italian, but he is an interesting composer just the same -:) And, jokes aside, Candida Thomson is really great.
