Cultural Conversation: Nicole Kidman in Hong Kong to film "Expats", an Amazon Series

- Hi there!
So I realise this is a bit outdated now, but here is my take on the bru-ha-ha surrounding Nicole Kidman in Hong Kong last month (August 2021) to film the Amazon Series "The Expats" (based on the Janice Lee novel "The Expatriates"). (I think I said July in the video, but it was August. :)
This is just something I wanted to do because it hits on a few cultural differences that I've experienced in my over 30 years of living in Hong Kong.
The information I refer to is based on the following news articles and of course, all is "alleged" to have happen ... and then not to have happened:
www.nytimes.com/2021/08/20/wo...
www.scmp.com/news/hong-kong/h...
variety.com/2021/global/asia/...
There were more I looked at, but that's the general gist of it all.
And just in case it's not clear (but it probably is because I say it enough): I love Hong Kong and I love Nicole Kidman! (And by saying what I love, you can no doubt guess what I DON'T love!)
In any case, I hope my insight will shed some respectful light on the situation and hopefully when she returns in November, there won't be any controversy ... but then again, like they always say ... even bad publicity is publicity ... so look for some fireworks to go off in November -- either real or manufactured!
If you like the video, thumbs it up and subscribe with notifications ... I hope to do more of these cultural conversations because now that I'm in the US for an extended period of time, I'm realising how much I miss the HK way of life: Simple, direct, respectful .... ahhhhh!!!! Is it too late to preserve it? I need to do another video before the changes that have been taking place make us all forget what made Hong Kong so special in the first place. (Were there problems, yes - but no one can deny how special it was.)
Happy watching, and remember to ROLL with it! :)
Best,
Sue

I also saw Nicole Kidman had been to Hong Kong for film shooting from newspapers, news articles and television, but didn't know it is an Amazon series. 😯
This is going to be amazing for her in the series .🌟
I haven’t read the book and not sure I will 😅 but am looking forward to watching the series!
Enjoy your videos so much. Cheers for more to come. Greetings from Peru. 🌈🌈
Thank you so much!! Peru!! I’ve never been but would love to go. Hope you’re staying well and healthy. 🤗
Fun fact about the script/improvisation, there’s a habit between older generations filming industry where instead of a full, completed script, the screenwriters would pass around pieces of papers with dialogues written on them to the director and actors on set. It sounds absurd but they somehow pull great work out of this practise. It’s not the norm today, but it’s a thing still.
Thank you for sharing this.
You’re welcome! 💖
Wow I thought it was really interesting you addressed the 'concept of space' b/w HK and the west for example, I'm Chinese with roots in HK but born abroad and I never understood why people sometimes walk by soo close to me when there's so much space around them... ??
U should have called Nicole...got her on to do a guest spot on the little Cantonese corner 😁
😂🥰🙏
@@CantoneseCorner that'd be really cool, plus she can get some real insight about being an expat from you
Will you return to HK? Love watching your channel.
You are awesome
Interesting! :)
It's not a movie it's a TV series I'm excited
There's no doubt that the working culture and conditions are different in Hong Kong than in Hollywood. I'm sure when Donnie Yen worked on a film in Hollywood he wouldn't ask the crew there to adopt Hong Kong's way of doing things. "When in Rome, do as the Romans do." However, to make things go smoother, a compromise on both sides would have been more optimal.
Agree with so much you said Susan… although perhaps there is a touch of a ‘prima donna’s’ behaviour here re: NK.
I wouldn’t disagree with that! I wish I were in HK and there in MK to see it all 🤩😍🤩
Wasn't Lulu Wang the one attacking Ron Howard for daring to make a movie about Lang Lang, he, an old white man XD All the while Lang Lang approved him directing. And now it looks like she, not Cantonese but from Beijing, is making a HK government and thus CCP "friendly" series, why else would they give Kidman priviliges like not having to do quarantine, or allow them to film at all. Didn't hear about them decorating a street more chinese, another red flag :D
As a HK citizen I have no comment
The worst thing not yet happen
Nicole is traversal
ROLL education nice!
Also she was able to pop out of Australia and fly everywhere. This was never about s virus
你點解返到美國而唔喺香港呢?
Privilege that's all it us.
