  • Nobel laureate Professor Joseph E. Stiglitz addressed the OECD on Wednesday 15th March, at a meeting hosted by the Trade Union Advisory Council to the OECD (TUAC) and their Working Group on Economic Policy.
He argued that raising interest rates is counterproductive and destabilising, and that the approach of Central banks may well have made matters worse for both economies and people. The Professor told the OECD that monetary policy will do nothing to resolve the supply bottlenecks that are causing current high inflation; on the contrary. Alternative policies to fight inflation exist and these do not come with higher unemployment and inequality, but with long term benefits.
