- Building a pair of Cowboy Chaps called Chinks. This style of chap go's a little below your knees. They became popular in hot areas of the country like Nevada and Arizona in the early 1950's. Today, they are one of the most common types. I'm making these for this weekends Horse & Mule Sale here in Salmon, Idaho. ENJOY!
Beautiful! Any cowboy would be proud to wear those!
Thank you!!!
Where get the pattern from
Simply amazing. You make it look so easy, when I bet it's not.
😊👍
Thank you! Really it's not that hard, just takes practice.
👍🏻👍🏻💯💯
Thanks!
Beautiful work. I especially like the sheep.
Thanks! They do look good on leather!
Beautiful craftsmanship!!
Thank you!!
Very beautiful...From what I have read, the fringes are to shed water.
I've heard that too. The fringe dries out and wicks the moisture out. Now I think it's mosty just show though.
Beautiful leather work I appreciate your attention to detail As for the fringe i always believed it's purpose was to help channel the water off the leather I used a pair of them when i worked on a cattle ranch but they were plain not a Sunday go meeting pair like yours Good job my friend
😊👍
Yeah, it's supposed to dry out and wick the moisture out faster....I think it's mostly just for looks now though. I like the way it looks, but hate to slice up leather like that!
I need a pair of those and a horse. Your skill is just mesmerizing! I could watch you for hours, if I had hours ...lol.
HA! Thank you Amye! Both of our horses died last year. I'd like to get another, but they are expensive.
That is some beautiful work my Friend. I'm sure someone will enjoy those for many years! Thanks for sharing and have a good day.
Thanks! They were one of the first things sold at the mule sale last night. Horse sale today.
@@MuskratOutdoors I thought they would be a quick sale. Very nice!
It's amazing how human hands turn a chunk of leather into something impressive. Great job and enjoyable video, Gary. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you Igor! It's funny considering it's a dead cow!
@@MuskratOutdoors Ha! Took me completely by surprise. Never heard that before. LOL. Can be used in a lot of circumstances and situations I can think of. Got me still chuckling.
Beautiful work! So many extra details!
Thanks Adam!
Man, you're somethin' else. Pure pleasure to watch, especially with them pickin' strings in the background. Sheer pleasure. Thanks again.
Ha! Thank you very much! It is fun to do when there's time!
Great job ,😊
Thank you!!
A true work of art

Nice work Gary, very nice! You never cease to amaze me with your leatherwork.
Thank you very much! I enjoy doing it. There just never seems to be enough time.
WoW!! Gorgeous!!! ❣❤❤❣
Thank you!!!!
@@MuskratOutdoors 😊👍
very cool
Thanks Joe!
First off .. VERY nice ! Not having been a CB , rode the circuit , or had such a need . I could never understand how these stay UP ?
Just the belt at the top. Cinch them down tight is all.
Mesmerizing to watch you do that! Beautiful work!👍🏽😀❤️🇺🇸
Thank you very much! It's fun to do, but I'm kinda burned out dealing with people over it....
SWEET 👍
Thanks!! Sold them at the Mule sale last night.
Wow. Fantastic. You make it look so easy but I know it takes time and talent.
Thanks! Lots of practice is all....
I’ve said it before but how impressive with the different skills you have. Another great example.
Ha! Thank you very much! I like making things.
Man that’s nice Gary 👍
Thank you Wayne!
You are very talented and your work shows in the product! Absolutely amazing how you turn a piece of leather into such a beautiful and useful item. Have a nice day
Thank you very much Jon. I've been doing this since the mid 1980's. Doing ranch work, the stuff I wanted, I couldn't afford, so I made my own. After awhile other ranch hands said "Make me one" and it went on from there. In 1997 I had a saddle shop until about 2002.
@@MuskratOutdoors that's so awesome man. Thanks for sharing some of your history. I'd love to sit down and have a coffee with you some day. If I ever get my passport and head back west I'll be sure to look you up. Have a good one my friend
@@jonfoy9166 Thank you too! Sounds good to me!
Great set of chinks. Hope you and Cindy are fine and dandy after all the work you put in at the sale. I didn't make it. I bet the Wolf howling contest was a hoot, I mean a howling good time.❤😅
Very nice work!
Thank you Bob!
very nice like the detail
Thank you very much!
You are incredibly talented!
HA! Thank you very much!!
WOW! THOSE TURNED OUT REALLY NICE!
Thank you Gary!
You are a man of many talents my friend. A true artisan is rare these days. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. It comes from being poor.......gotta make the things I want or go without.
@@MuskratOutdoorsI am much the same way.
Beautiful
Thank you John!
Wow awesome job, love your leather working videos!
Thank you very much!
You are truly an artist great video thank you.
Thank you very much! I like doing it!
Amazing work😊❤
Thank you very much!
Muy bueno👍👍👍
Gracious!!!
Beautiful stuff Muskrat 👍👍
Thank you Frank!
You had to have done this sort of thing professionally right? I mean that’s just amazing work. I don’t know anything about being a cowboy but I know fine work when I see it. That’s something else. 👍👍
Thank you! I'm self taught. I've worked most of my life on ranches and couldn't afford the stuff I wanted, so I started making it. I had a saddle shop from 1997-2002. Funny, when you take something you enjoy, and turn it into a job, it's not fun anymore. I enjoy doing it now and then though.
Amen.
Excellent work! That was great to watch. Thank you. Keep them coming. Hey, I may have to stop drinking my Natty Light with all the sorry political crap going on. Lol. From the great high river State of Idaho!
I KNOW!! I didn't know they made it either! Keystone for now I guess?
Getting mighty sick of these liberal perverts!
Boycott Anheuse-Busch, Nike, Gillette , Dicks sporting goods and now Lowes, they committed 10 billion for this woke shit !!
As everyone has said, very nice. Could you tell me the name of your sewing machine? I do a little of this craft, a machine would broaden my field. Thanks.
Thanks! It's a Tippman Boss Stitcher. It's got a lever like a slot machine and is non-electric. It will sew through 3/4 inch of leather, but not great with thin, soft leather. I've had it since about 1995 and really like it.
@@MuskratOutdoors Thank you, for the info, Muskrat. That's how I found your channel, was searching out leather workers and you came up in my feed. This was a few years ago now.
i always wondered what chaps were for , i have chaps for riding my bike but that was to protect my legs from road rash .
Horseback, they do quite a bit. They keep your legs from rubbing against the saddle as bad, keep snow and rain off....until they get soaked....waxing them helps, and protect from brush and thorns.
Beautiful workmanship! Can you ship leather products too Canada?
I never have, but I don't see why not?
Those look awesome! I have a question I am wanting to make myself a pair, but I am unsure of what oz leather to use?
Thanks! I like 5-6 ounce pebble grain chap leather, or waxed "blacksmith sides". I get mine mail order from Dubois Leather & Shoe, in Dubois, Idaho. I don't have their phone number off hand, but I bet you can look it up. The owner's name is Steve.
@@MuskratOutdoors Do you use the 5-6 oz for the yokes also???
You ever work with Eddie Guyton
Is it Ed's Saddle Shop? I haven't, but I know who he is.
Is that the Idaho version of what we call ‘Chaps’?
Kind of. Chinks are short chaps that go a little below your knee. They started out in hot areas like Arizona and Nevada about 1950. They are probably the most popular style today, but not authentic to the Old West.
@@MuskratOutdoors … I’ve never seen a pair. I’m only familiar with chaps since that’s what we always wore to work in.
Regardless, a well made pair were like gold. Probably the same held true for chinks.
Wow! Fantastic workmanship. What beautiful chinks - thanks for sharing this … BRAVO 👏🏻
Thank you very much!
I have to say you done a really nice job on those chinks, My hat's off to you Muskrat.
Thank you very much Travis.
❤😅 #nice chinks. Hope you and Cindy are doing fine.
Thank you! We are. The Horse and Mule sale was this weekend.....pretty worn out!
