In 2.2 its way easier, as you can make counters persist between attempts, so you can just hook up a pickup trigger to an on death trigger and place a pickup trigger that sets the count to zero at the start, so if you play it normally the count is always 0 but if you're in practice it's above 0. 2.2 is poggers.
What it does is through comparison of attempt numbers. It records your attempt number at the very beginning of the level, and if yours is higher than the recorded number, you're in Practice Mode
