  • Gee, it can be tough when our little ones, particularly under 2 have a preferred parent. Especially if you're not the preferred parent, or maybe you're the exhausted parent who can't even pee in peace on their own. Can you relate?
In this month's Maggie Moment parenting, author, educator and host of the Parental As Anything podcast Maggie Dent shares her helpful tips for supporting co-parents when parental favouritism becomes a thing.

Great topic! This can be very hard to be on the receiving end of. Personally, I, as mum, often have so much on my plate that a lot of the more fun stuff can fall to Dad - dad is just the one that pops out from working (so has the novelty factor) and plays. Naturally, he seems more fun, but I have a million things to do to keep the house running! My tip is to carve out funny/silly/special time - as in - ignore all the stuff that needs to be done and just have some silly time to connect. Everyone will feel better for it. Also, don’t show your child you’re hurt by their favouritism, or guilt them about it. It won’t help the situation.

Being the favorite parent is sometimes tiring, you never get any peace

Indeed. Where you can try and carve out micro moments of time for you. Even if it's just 5 minutes to sit outside and have a cuppa.

Thank you for your videos, podcast and books Maggie. Is there anything the preferred (AKA exhausted) parent can say/do to help this situation with a 3.5yr old ??

Honesty. Share that you also need time to fill your cup up too so that you can be the best version of yourself you can be for them. :-) Team Maggie x
