The .gif file format, despite what the devs called it, is correctly pronounced with a hard g, because there also exists a .jif file format, which is the format I'll assume you're referring to if you use a soft g. Where I live there's a very popular cleaning cream called Jif. I have yet to meet a person that pronounces GIF with a j because we already have that word and it means cleaner and Jif does not belong in your computer, well unless your intention is to destroy it. Then by all means Jif away :P
