  • At the 2018 FIFA World Cup Germany became the last defending champions to be eliminated at the group stage. We asked fans from Germany, Mexico, Sweden and South Korea to talk us through one of the most dramatic groups from Russia 2018. Do you think the Champions' Curse is real?

      @ADITYA Ghimire at least I hope so, because in Brazil 50, Italy was the current champion of that time, and was eliminated in the group stage in that World Cup, and well, at that time the curse of the champion was not known, but Italy remained in the group stage in that World Cup.
      It was eliminated for having lost against Sweden in the first match 3-2, Italy needed Paraguay to beat Sweden in the second match of the group, but in the end Sweden drew 2-2 against Paraguay, and that result already eliminated Italy, already eliminated Italy in the last game they beat Paraguay 2-0,
      Sweden was first, and Italy was second, but at that time you did not qualify second, and Paraguay last,and that was the first hint of the champion's curse, it started long before 2002, and a long time later, the curse of the champion came to Italy again in South Africa 2010, and as we already know, it was out in the group stage in South Africa 2010, after a long failure in Brazil 50, so there is no guarantee that the curse of the champion only happens once, so it is likely that France will repeat its failure as in 2002, and the curse of the champion falls once more, the curse may not have happened to brazil in 2006, but you never know what will happen.

      If soccer were the number 1 sport in the US, so many top athletes would grow up playing soccer and adapt to soccer. Of course people like JJ Watt or Lebron James would never be amazing soccer players. But I cannot tell you how many players the US would have like Stephen Curry who would have been amazing at soccer had it been our top sport. And there are hundreds of players like him. Not to mention the fact that the REASON why American academies are poor and why soccer is more of a rich person's sport in the US is BECAUSE of the sport's relative lack of popularity. In sports that are big and popular in the US, like American football, baseball and basketball, the poorer athletes who are supremely skilled actually rise to the top, because, since we understand those sports, we understand how to develop and identify top players. If soccer had been the most popular sport in the US from the beginning, poor people who are great athletes would rise just like you see in basketball and american football. So just to recap, I am making multiple points; that yes people like JJ Watt and Lebron James and many other top American athletes would not be amazing soccer players, but that there is an excess of insane athletes who would make amazing soccer players, that if soccer were out top sport from the beginning, we would have a soccer culture where we understood how to develop and identify top talent, like we do with sports that are popular here, that many of the top American athletes would develop more into soccer players. You cannot separate the fact that soccer isn't our top sport with our problematic academy system; they are related, as when a nation truly loves a sport from the beginning, they understand how to develop players. The US teams would be like the French 2018 team with a lot of very physical players who knew how to technically control the ball, mixed with actual technical skill that you get in a nation that understands the sport. Combine that with the unparalleled resources, population, diversity and talent pool the US has, with the fact that if soccer were the number 1 sport from the beginning, the US would have competed in the early world cups that were easier to win, the US would have won 6-8 of the 21 World Cups had soccer been the most popular sport in the US from the beginning (1800s)

    I think, the curse only works for European teams. After Brazil won World Cup on '94 and 2002, they still can make their way to the knock-out stage in the next edition ('98 & 2006). And also Argentina too, after their glory on '86, they even can go through to the final in '90.

    • @DukeSkylocker
      @DukeSkylocker Před 5 lety +90

      And yet I'd say Brazil's win in 2002 arguably caused a much bigger curse for South America in general. Since 2002, not only has no South American team won, but out of the 12 teams that ranked in the top 3 in each of the past 4 tournaments, only one of those was South American (Argentina in 2014, where it ranked second) while two of the tournaments didn't even feature a South American team in the semi-finals (2006 and 2018). Compare that to the South American dominance from 1986 to 2002, where they won 3 out the 5 world cups and in the two that they didn't win still managed to make it to the finals. Not only that, but the last team Brazil and Argentina won a final against was Germany (Argentina in 1986 and Brazil in 2002), which since then has never lost a world cup match against either of them (or any South American team for that matter), even managing to humiliate them on separate occasions (2010 Germany crushed Argentina 4-0, while in 2014 they beat Brazil 7-1).

And as one of the fans said in the video, Germany smashed their way throughout the confederation cup, bringing theme more attention and confidence heading into the world cup. Germany without Klose have proved they still have talent (they've beaten Italy in Euro 2016 quarterfinals). Klose's demission isn't the only element who has generated the Germany elimination during this WC. Germany have lost a lot of great players who have carried the team in 2010-2014. Plus there were a lot of tensions in the team and 2 clans had formed. It probably didn't help the Germany team during the WC and has engendered a lack of cohesion.

      I predict France winning their group with relative ease with maybe a stumble or two to give the skeptics pause. They will draw a scrappy but underpowered opponent in the round of 16 and eke out a 1-0 or 2-1 victory. Then in the quarter finals, they’ll face a stronger team and go the distance to penalties, where they’ll lose 4-3, with Mbappe’s kick being saved and Pogba hitting the crossbar.

      Lewandowski I don't think it's about "ups and downs". As far as I'm concerned, the press strongly suggested that the World Cup was going to be a disaster for Germany. The internal championship always has the same winner which crushes all the other contestants, and that's not good at all. I believe they had and still have young players who could've carried Germany further into the 2018 edition, but Joachim Löw showed how much "talent" he really has. They should've just shook hands in 2014 and left after winning, leaving room for a new generation. Most players and the coach.
