  • On 5 November 2003, Girls Aloud spoke to ITN about the band's difficult year following Cheryl Tweedy's conviction for assault. Having been charged with racially aggravated assault following a drunken altercation with nightclub toilet attendant Sophie Amogbokpa in January of that year. Tweedy was later found guilty of assault but cleared of the racially aggravated assault charge. The singer was sentenced to 120 hours of community service. Flanked by bandmates Nadine Coyle, Sarah Harding, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh, Cheryl apologised to her fans and her family. She insisted that her being drunk at the time of the assault was not relevant and assured her interviewer that she would still be going nightclubbing.
Girls Aloud have announced they will be reuniting for a UK arena tour in 2024, in "celebration" of their late bandmate, Sarah Harding, who died from breast cancer in 2021.

It was a dumb mistake and decision on Cheryl part, as she was drunk and obviously she didn’t look for. A fight as it just happened and the victim, pick the wrong person and just bad timing.
Also, I don’t believe she was or is racist. Just because the person she got in a fight with, happen to be a different race doesn’t make her racist.

Yes! It was a sample mistake and she learned from it, as she never did it or happened again after that.

What exactly was the reason behind posting this video on the day they announce their anticipated reunion? Cheryl served her community service and has moved on in the 20 years since, so why would you post this to try and damage her reputation again ?? ?

So I have to play devils advocate…just because a person receives “community service” for a violent assault she gets to move past that…What about any possible ptsd she may have caused to her victim? How does that victim get to move on? It’s not about the perpetrator…Let’s just remember that.

This was 21 years ago. Strange to think how the world has changed so much. If she’d punched a black toilet attendant in the head these days, she would no doubt be branded a racist and would likely be kicked out of a band. Things were simpler back then. Power of social media these days can make or break you.

Ooops 8:49 the interviewer mentions males have XY chromosomes and females have XX. That wouldn’t stand now either. The gender nutters would have to correct them. 😂

Before the band formed, she was always seen as the "favourite." There was no way they'd fire her. If it had been Sarah or Kimberly, they probably would've got fired.

Is it really necessary to post this now when it was over 20 years ago? They’ve just announced the reunion in memory of Sarah and you think it’s tasteful to post this? Get some humanity

The single biggest mistake Cheryl made in the days following the court decision was refusing to apologise to the toilet attendant. I know in later years she sort of said sorry and expressed regret for her behaviour but it would’ve helped if at the time she apologised to Sophie. But she was adamant at the time she wasn’t in the wrong. It wasn’t until much later she acknowledged she shouldn’t have assaulted the toilet attendant under any circumstances.
I’m not taking sides. It was a silly incident and from what I’ve read in Cheryl’s autobiography, both women were to blame in their own respective ways.
I do believe that more than enough time has passed and Cheryl shouldn’t still be copping flak for something that happened 20 years ago. She’s a grown up and mature woman now. A far cry from the silly and starry eyed teenager from back then. I wish people would give her a break.
It’s just her behaviour immediately afterwards that’s the problem. Her stubbornness and lack of outward regret even here, just reinforced people’s views that she was nothing but a common and violent chav, and has blighted her character with a lot of people ever since.

Soo interesting watching this and remember thinking the band would be over not long after due to Cheryl's mistake. But they just carried releasing amazing songs and this story faded which is a good career. To go from this to Girls aloud OOC era and Cheryl's 2010 peak in her career to national treasure is insane!
