  • Basenjis are usually polite and curious towards visitors. But there is still some training worth doing to prevent agression.

You’re incredibly thoughtful and forward-thinking in all you do with your dogs. You must have really done your research prior to getting basenjis. Your dogs were lucky you knew about the importance of this counter-conditioning while they were still puppies. It’s just wonderful how you help other basenji owners know what to expect and how to manage and train for the unique characteristics of this breed. You do a great job of filming and I loved seeing all the examples of typical basenji greetings. It is fascinating to see you work with your basenjis. It brings back memories of our basenjis, Emmy and Howdy, of thirty years ago. They were challenging for sure, but also unique and a lot of fun, with two very distinct personalities. Your basenji whose ears repeatedly lie back in a happy expression reminds us of Howdy, our male-just so full of joy and happy to meet new friends.

Yes ! I noticed they don’t bark or jump up. Monty especially wants to go up to everyone outside and wants their attention. Ar home, he likes to approach carefully and doesn’t really jump. I will try this training. Love your videos! ❤

Something funny, I saw your one Basenji do what mine does. To the lady in the red sweater, the dog sniffed her breath. My company sometimes are worried my Basenji will lick their face, when she only wants to sniff the breath. Is this a common thing with Basenji's? And what does it mean?

This is common in basenjis. Kind of akin to sniffing the butts of other dogs to identify you and to see where you might have been.

ha ha, yes when we get home all the dogs first sniff our mouths. I think they suspect we have been eating something yammy without them and want to check 😆

Mine does that too, always, to me when I come home and often she would like to do this to everyone she meets properly. Wonder if this is a basenji thing or just general dog thing, where other breeds just include the lick? 😁

When greeting people she doesn’t know my basenji tries to get in their face and then does the typical basenji snarl/ growl that they do when greeting other basenji sometimes. It comes across to them like aggression but knowing her and the breed I don’t think that’s what it is. Do you have any advice? I encourage people not to get in her face but it’s difficult as she actively tries to get in their face!

I think I know what you mean, my girl sometimes do that if a stranger approaches her on the street while we are walking. I think some more fearful basenjis might do that, and some people especially if they approach fast or have rapid movements, scare them so they do this warning growl. I would just make sure every interaction with new people is pleasant by letting them give her treats, and of course asking people to let her approach first and let her sniff them (but maybe not the face). If they have treats in their hands she would concentrate on the treats, and will relax that everything is safe.

Thankyou! She is definitely a 1 or 2 person dog but likes to observe mostly, it takes a lot of interactions for her to trust someone. She is super primitive in the majority of her behaviour, even more so than most basenjis we have met. I guess It’s like a gamble how wild a basenji will be when you bring them home as cute little puppies, but weirdly I’m glad I got the wildest one of the bunch, she has taught me so much!
