  • @Nik-dc4ti
    @Nik-dc4ti Před 4 lety +48

    As someone who is diagnosed with BPD, depression and generalized anxiety, I really loved All the Bright Places. I didn't find that it left a bad message, in fact, I thought it hit the mark. Theo had Bipolar disorder which was portrayed very well, and the reality of suicide was also shown rather accurately; if you die life goes on and it doesn't just affect your life ending, but it also affects the lives of those around you. I think the important bit was the acknowledgment that there are people who care for you, particularly violet and his other friends.

  • @DiaYouKnowWho
    @DiaYouKnowWho Před 4 lety +37

    The one point I don't agree with you upon is "All the bright places". The book was not really supposed to have a hopeful message and I do believe that it was an outlet of the author as she went through a situation where she found (I think she was the one who found him, not 100% sure though) her best friend killed himself. However one of the more asked questions in regards to the book that I saw on goodreads is " Where were the adults in this book" - and I think it reflects a fairly important truth about mental health - just because parents and friends don't notice their child or friend is not well, won't make the issue non-existent. Just because somebody does not ask for help, won't make them okay, au contraire. So I do think the book makes a good point in regards to people - young and old - covering up how they really feel and ending up in an unfortunate situation because they are afraid they will be just stuck in a certain box and won't ever be able to leave that stigma.

    When you're talking about All The Bright Places and 13 Reasons Why not having a hopeful message, I read both those books while suffering from suicidal ideation due to being abused and I *liked* that they didn't have push positivity because it felt more real to me. I haven't reread either since I was 17, so I don't know if my opinion would change as I'm an adult but I loved those books because I felt like they understood me and I related deeply to both when I found I couldn't relate to book with more of a positive twist. In my opinion, This is Where it Ends focuses on the superficial things because the author wanted to portray the characters as what they were: just teenagers being soppy and doing teenager things. Nowdays I know the problems and I also identified that this book made my depression worse. But omg I have a completely different view on All the bright places. Its my absolute favorite book and it changed me with handling my metal illness really hard. It took me in a better place and thats while or maybe because I really identified myself with Finch. And I kinda get the part of where you said that they are more than they illnesses and thats true but tbh I was really happy that the book focus so much about this part because at this time I also was focused on mine. I had no time to do other stuff and I kinda was my illness like they are. So for me at least this was really relateable and I love this book. Hey Hailey.
    First of all, I 100% agree with you about 13 Reasons Why. It’s an important subject that deserves more open discussion, and the tapes thing was an interesting premise, but like you said, it was handled badly. Hannah was so badly written by a certain point I almost wanted her to die! I just didn’t care about her at all!
    My worst/least favourite book of the decade would have to be All The Light We Cannot See by Anthony Doerr. Just did not make any sense. I managed to get to the end even after the writer claimed the Second World War didn’t start until 1942! There were some really interesting parts about the German Hitler Youth boy and if it had focused more on him it would’ve been a much better book. But the wholly unrealistic blind girl and the magic diamond she needs to drop back into the sea to save the world - load of crap. That and the historical inaccuracies ruined it for me.

    I am right there with you on Thirteen Reasons Why. Back when it came out, it was on a Must Reads list at my high school. They put almost two dozen copies in circulation at the beginning of the year. There were so many that the library ended up giving some away for free. I remember getting a hold of one of those and being so disturbed by what I read. It didn’t seem like a book a school library should be recommending at all. The messages about suicide were so damaging. This was ten years ago. I imagine a lot of students are probably checking it out because of the Netflix series and that makes me so sad.

    A good YA book that doesn't glamourize/romanticize mental illness is Losing Adam by Adrienne Clarke. It's narrated by both Adam (who begins to present as schizophrenic) and his girlfriend, but the author does a good job of showing that just loving someone who is as sick as Adam is won't "save them". It's really scary at times because you're in Adam's head as he's having hallucinations/delusions, but it does really show you that mental illness isn't this quirky personality trait that the media loves to present it as. Unfortunately there isn't that much of a message of hope since there is no cure for schizophrenia and anti-psychotics aren't the kindest drugs, but again that's reality... but the author did a good job of showing that despite being so sick, Adam can still be loved which is probably one of the most important messages for someone suffering from any mental illness can receive.

    I agree with All the Bright Places, I really really enjoyed reading the book but it missed so much opportunity. I would’ve loved to see both characters get help and change and maybe break up in the end if the author really wanted to end it with a “tragedy”. And now it’s becoming a Netflix movie. What’s worse is that the author is actually really sweet and her second book is AMAZING and I think she has no idea what damage her book can do.

Another book that I dislike is The Vampire Diaries. I picked it up because I really love the movie but the book was (at least in those 150 pages) nothing like it. and beside that (I am ok with books and movies being different and I can even like both), but it was also very confusing and dragging so much. I dont know if I ever will go back to that book, but I think I much rather watch the movie again :D

    Haven’t read through all the comments I’m not sure if anyone else has said this, and it’s a bit of a spoiler but doesn’t ruin an ending..but The Dark Half by Stephen King ... stop reading now if you don’t want to know anything at all about this book... and I’ll try to be vague...but it does tackle one of the subjects/plots that you mentioned on this list....It’s kind of a weird thing that is not the subject of very many books that I know of! Anyways you’re probably already familiar with this book, but I thought it was interesting that someone else attempted to do what sounds like a very similar story.

Maybe the tv show is more sensitive on the topic than the book?
