Sorry for the late reply, but thanks so much! I'm really interested to see how this might work too. I'm curious if the change is specific to the US and/or if this idea was conceptualized specifically for the US since Mercari is originally a Japanese company.
UGH I just learned about that too. SO then their "no fees" when using your balance is a half lie. Which is basically a whole lie. That's disappointing!
That would be interesting! Not sure I see that especially since it's a Japan owned company, but they could try to buy just the US portion of it I suppose.
I think both Sellers and Buyers are getting destroyed by Mercari. Buyers are not going to pay that extra payment processing fees or extra fees and Sellers aren't going to be able to sell anything unless at a loss. So I think it's a loss on both sides. Back to eBay or any other online marketplace.
Yeah it's a real strange idea, but I have to assume that they put some serious thought and research into it so they MUST have some idea that it should work? Maybe? I dunno. That's why I run a tiny CZcams channel rather than a big company! 😂😂😂
I think your analysis is spot on. I’m not convinced the gamble will payoff for Mercari, but their strategy is as you described. Liked and subbed.

thank for the breakdown
You're welcome!
regardless if you are paying with your balance, Mercari is still charging a service fee

A BUYER FEE? THATS A DISASTER
Yeah... It'll be interesting to see if it works, but all logic points to no...
In a few years eBay will buy out Mercari. 🤷♂️
THEY HAVE NO REASON TO
