  • In this video, you will get an introduction to the Common Data Service (CDS) for Power Apps from a canvas apps perspective. We will create an entity, learn about field types, business rules, relationships, views, build a simple app, and set security on it. Not a be all, end all video but enough to get you going and productive with this core datasource.

I'm always impressed with your videos Shane. I never go anywhere else now. Too many times in the past, I've wasted so much time in following along someone else's video and always got stuck because they glanced over or missed a crucial step. Your videos always have all the important steps, and very well explained on top of it. Thank-you!!!

Thank you Shane. What a fantastic intro. I have been making PowerApps using SharePoint for my data source. Honestly Common Data Service seemed like a scary black hole. However, now I can see what a useful thing it is. I work in a school, so I really need to be able to control access and roles and the CDS roles will really help. As always, your videos are so clear, concise and informative.

Excellant. Much needed. And sign me up for the 8h (or 16h or however long it takes to deep-dive this thing) : it's the big missing piece of the PowerApps picture for me. What we tend to find at the moment as far as learning opportunity goes is more along the lines of "All Hails To CDS" regardless its actual usefulness in the context of canvas (which is counter-productive when you just geniuenly want to learn the darn thing). You hit a great balance there I found.

    Hi Shane,
thanks for always sharing these very good informations about all the features of PowerApps. I just have a 2 problems:
    1. How can I get rid of the different versions which are always stored in the background? In my Power Apps Gallery it shows always the different versions and I do not all the copies in CDS. It will block my space after a few weeks.
    2. I have data from Dynamics 365 (product infomations) and I want to combine this data with a picture from the product which is right now stored in a Sharpoint Documentary Libary. Can I get the picture data from a sharepoint document libary to CDS? I already found the sharepoint Link. This works fine on a desktop computer. But the picture will not apeare on a mobile phone with this link.

I have a Power BI background and start learning PowerApps. I tried to create relationships between entities in the CDS but i can't make it work and use the functionality in my app. I don't really understand how it works as I don't have to specify on which fields the entity needs to be set (in contrary to Power BI).

    1. As a developer I have premium license which I can use to create Entitiy for the business.
    2. The Canvas that is developed with this can this be shared with standard users(my crowd is big) who can use this application the way they are using it now.

Hello I hope you are well, I am developing an app based on the PowerApps "Leave Request" template, unfortunately I am stuck.
    My problem is the following:
I have a record of employees in an excel table, this record contains the day in which they started working in the company and the vacation days have been assigned the problem is that annually from the date in which they started working the days assigned vacations must be restarted with the possibility of saving only 5 days, for example:
The employee Robert was assigned 10 days a year of which he only spent 3, which would result in a balance of 7 days but since he has completed his year in the company he can only save 5 days and he is assigned 10 more having a new result 15 days total in the new year.
How can I develop this to be done automatically according to the current day and month for all employees at the same time?

Hi Shane, you have just about single handedly taught me how to use PowerApps! I appreciate your videos and they are very easy to follow for someone like me with no technical training. I am building a large app for our staff and faculty at our school to use for all things business related (purchase requests, order staff lunch, HR functions, Operations and technology requests etc). Because the app is so large, I want to use CDS to help with performance. So, I created a module of the app for staff lunch orders using the CDS (it was the most simple to start with). I published it and now it's telling me that you have to have a premium license to use the app... I tried downloading it, uploading then renaming it and that didn't work. Any thoughts? Thank you!

I've been struggling for a while to allow users to input images inline with text via the rich text editor with no success. A recent update (powerapps.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/announcing-the-rich-text-editor-rte-control/) seemed to say this was now possible, but I think only for CDS/Dataverse based apps, and maybe just for Model driven apps. Do you know if this control is (or perhaps one day will be) available on SharePoint Canvas apps? I'm not sure I could talk my company into purchasing premium licenses for everyone, so I'd like to keep it in SharePoint if I can.

Hey Shane, you're making great videos about all of the PowerApps possibilities. CDS is i guess the way to easily share your app without problems of connection with other datasources because it's embedded in your app. But I'm wondering if you could make a video of how to convert an entire excel sheet to cds entities, so you don't need a connection to an external excel sheet.

    • @ShanesCows
      @ShanesCows  Před 3 lety

Hey Pieter if you look at CDS there is an Import from Excel option. from Make.PowerApps.com click Data > Entities and the in the toolbar click Get Data from Excel.

Shane, could you please make a video on
    1. Create copy of the prod environment -
The master environment has the users and privileges but after copying In new environment, I am creating a new app(with the same entities for which the user has full permission I checked under security role -> last tab Entities 🔵) and assigning to same user which is there in Prod(I could see in the new environment all the security role and all other details are copied as well). However that particular user is not able to access the data with the error (Example- No access to data Employees:Null).
I could see every security thing is same for that user as prod but still I am getting error.
    2. Also, I would like you to please explain how to do this.
    i) If I import the unmanaged solution from prod to UAT environment and then make some change in the entity(only one entity), canvas and model driven app based on the requirements. Afterthat If I again reimport the unmanaged solution from UAT to PROD then other entities will also be affected? or powerapps will ask before importing the same solution again. Sorry, I could not try it by myself because of some restriction.
Kindly make the videos on this ASAP. 🙏🙏

It depends. CDS is a premium connector so you will need a premium license to use any app that has CDS as a data source.

Powerapps are all cool and everything, but every time I watch these (excellent) videos is, I question myself; why don't you just learn real programming? By the time you learn all these crazy quirks and ever-changing platform , you could learn php or .NET of some other stable, mainstream development platform. As long as you do simple things, this makes tremendous sense, but beyond a certain point of complexity, nobody other than the person who built this could ever have a prayer of extending or supporting one of these.

I had the same thought while watching another video by Shane. Fantastic insights into how to use Flow, but it looked like a form of visual coding that is far more cumbersome than just writing code. Working with the common data service web API directly looks significantly more appealing.

Because once you learn to do all of this, you can develop apps about 8x faster, distributed across virtually any data source that has an API.

Hi Shane, I use CDS to manage contacts but my employer uses Google Contacts because of its mobile/Bluetooth interface in his car etc.
I know there is a Google Connector in Powerapps but it has limitations (ie, you can create a Google Contact from Powerapps but you cannot delete that contact from Google Contacts from Powerapps. There are also certain fields that you cannot assign values to).
Would you be interested in doing a video demonstrating how to work these two platforms together?
I wonder whether using UI/PowerAutomate also would come up as part of the solution as per this link that got me thinking about about a way forward from where I am stuck: czcams.com/video/bZrrdoytTH0/video.html
Thx for considering this and for any tips/feedback. Stay well! Gerald Dahl
