Asakusa Shrine Annual Festival “Sanja Festival”
It is held on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays starting from the third Saturday of May, centered around the 44 parishioners of Asakusa Shrine, and is a three-day festival centered on the brave and gorgeous mikoshi togyo, which retains the atmosphere of the Edo period. It is one of Japan's most representative festivals, attracting 1.8 million people. It is said that Asakusa, a downtown area with an Edo-era atmosphere, is at its most lively during the year, and it has become one of Tokyo's signature early summer events. On the first day, a ``large procession'' consisting of Ohayashi stalls, Tobigashira Kiyari, various Asakusa dances, Teko-mai and Kumiodori performed by the geisha troupe heralded the beginning of the festival in the town of Asakusa, and was designated as an Intangible Cultural Property of Tokyo. The designated ``Shinto ritual Binzasara Mai'' will also be dedicated. On the second day, the ``Regular Festival Ceremony'' was held, and after that, about 100 shrine shrines from the 44 towns of Asakusa parishioners gathered at the shrine grounds and performed exorcisms one by one. Once received, we will pass it on to each neighborhood association. On the final day, the three mikoshi shrines, Ichinomiya, Ninomiya, and Sannomiya, will be carried out from the shrine precincts in the early morning, and during the day, the shrine shrines will be carried out from the shrine grounds. The festival event concludes with the ``miyairi'' (entering the shrine), where the people are divided into different directions and returned to the shrine grounds after sunset. During this period, the city of Asakusa is decorated with festival colors, various rituals are performed at shrines, and various dances are performed in the precincts and Kagura hall.
