  • After an initial introduction to U.S. buyers as the 1972- 1983 Isuzu-sourced Chevy LUV compact pickup truck, the new 1982 Chevy S10 pushed the Isuzu / LUV out of Chevy’s nest. But the little Isuzu pickup truck lived on as the Isuzu P’UP for several more years. Here, Steve examines a 1986 P’UP and discusses the birth - and death - of the 55 mph national speed limit.

    Man, do y’all remember how big the “mini truck” craze was back in the 80’s? The things were EVERYWHERE and from a customization standpoint, I think mini trucks were to the 80’s what vans were to the 70’s!
    Glancing at that brochure Steve showed also made me think about what a handsome exterior design the Gen 1 S-10’s and Blazers offered - you don’t see a ton of them around anymore, but on the occasion I do catch one in the wild I will usually do a double-take and just enjoy the clean, crisp lines for a moment or two…….👍

    My grandfather had a '87 Pup as a yard truck and parts hauler. I drove the snot out of that thing. Wasn't fast, but it would get you there and back with no problems. It was a 5 speed and as basic as it got. I would deliver engines to repair shops in that thing. Can't say anything bad about it. Decent fuel milage. It was like a Timex. Took a lickin' and kept on ticking. Until someone stole it one night and rolled it.

    I had a 1988 Izusu pickup that served me well. It had a roomy standard cab and a larger than average 2.6L 4 cylinder. It also had rear disc brakes when not even full size pickups had them. The best part is that it had the best ride of all the mini trucks, not choppy yet firm and steady, about as sporty as a truck could get. When it was totaled by a semi driving into it, the wallowing ride of the brand new Tacoma that replaced it was severely disapponting. I spent hundreds of dollars upgrading that Tacoma’s suspension to make it as enjoyable to drive as the Isuzu.

    Hi Steve another great video. I owned a 92 Isuzu 4x4 truck once. The little truck was nothing to complain about. I drove it a yr or 2 and it never let me down and nothing had to be repaired. Sold it to my local NAPA owner for a delivery truck. That truck was retired at 390k on the clock. The owner said he wish he a dozen of them. As the yrs went by and I would see the little truck on the road but now sporting a NAPA helmet on top. I'd think to myself I sold that truck too cheap. Oh well you know the saying, pigs get fat and hogs get slaughtered. I got a fat check and no one got burned. Namaste 🙏🏼

    I worked for a heavy truck (tractor and dump truck) and industrial parts store in metro Atlanta straight out of HS in 1986 before getting my crap together and going to college. I picked up and delivered parts in one of three 2980 diesel powered Chevy Luvs we had. They couldn't pull a greasy strong out of an elephant's butt! All three were stripped down dogs; the worst one being a long bed, and that's usually the one I was stuck with. All were faded red that had turned pink by that time as well. I can't tell you the amount of times I'd have to go down to Moreland Avenue in Atlanta and pick up a load of brake shoes for OTR tractors or something else that overloaded that little truck and would have to drive back down I-20 or 285 with that thing skating all around, feeling like the front tires were barely touching. Good times! We finally got a few S-10's, and it was a night and day difference.

    THANKS Steve for the Video on the P'UP!! To be truthful it was extremely hard to get the P'UP to do 65 mph, lol 😆
    The '87 I had, had an automatic transmission. I'm pretty sure it was the only option other than a radio, lol. At 75mph, that little 4 banger was screaming for mercy. It was almost guaranteed to not get a speeding ticket!!! Itcwas actually nice to have to drive in the right lane of the interstates, or take back roads to keep from grenading the engine 🤯. Awesome on ⛽️ gas, a truely economic vehicle. My neighbor bought it new. Garage kept it, and only drove it 60k miles!! At the age of 83, he decided to buy a new base model Toyota pickup. So 2k for the P'UP was a no brainer. It was a nice metallic lighter shade blue with the blue interior.
    Once again, thank you so much for sharing this video.
    Happy Veterans Day. Thank you to everyone who has served & made our freedom remain free so that we can enjoy videos like this one.

    I still have roughly in 86 Isuzu pup. It was rusty and it was in 10 years old when I picked it up. To get out to the farm for it to be used for a beater truck. It never moved from the spot where I offloaded off my trailer. Still there today. Why use that when you could ride around with something had higher ground clearance I guess. I had I think it was 73 Chevy Love it had four headlights and it was 40 it was yellow. Well just for grins my neighbor and I set up on jack stands just barely sanded it and washed off taped it up and sprayed it with primer and paint. Now where the rust was at especially below the doors on the cab and cab corners. We just took masking tape and put over it to keep the expandable foam from coming out of it as it expanded. We shaved it down. Put a layer tape over it and spray it yellow again. It gets better remember where you do it for grins. Back then Walmart had every color and 10 different shades for every color and their cheap 75 cents a can paint. So we used a dozen spray cans and a dozen primer cans and painted it. I taken the grill off and put a little more effort into it gloss black and clear coated it. It looked really really sharp from especially about 20 feet away. Well I just wanted something to drive around town go pick up stuff and my neighbor couldn't let it be so we didn't a weekend. I think I gave 350 bucks for it and the used car dealer and his salesman were literally laughing and pointing at me as I drove away. But some guy came up and off me something like $1,800 for this truck. This was before 1995 so that would have to be at least $5,000 an equivalent value today! I pointed out all the crap we had done to the truck and I do mean crap. He said he didn't care. He's just going to drive around town basically same thing I was going to do with it. Happen how to with me he went to his bank he paid me so I bank here too I'll put the money in the bank and I just walked the 5 miles back to the house. For about 10 years I ran into him from time to time and he was still driving that little truck probably off and on. That's my crazy LUV story. Well thank you Steve because I actually thought they called it Isuzu pup because it wasn't a real truck. Is only a pup of a truck compared to the old dogs.

    Accidentally sent before I was done. The 1.9L engine had a bad wrist pin(s) that rattled like hell above 3,000 rpm unless you were wide open with a heavy load on it, then the rattling held off until about 3,500 rpm. With the 4-speed that meant top speed was about 55. It had an up level interior trim option that was actually quite nice, truck rode and handled very well. Despite not much ground clearance and open diffs it was phenomenal in snow, probably helped it weighed so little. It was a northeast PA truck, and I learned a hard lesson to look close at the frame before buying a vehicle. Frame literally snapped in 2 about 9 months after I bought it. Guarantee that’s why this truck is in the boneyard. The body on mine was in great shape.

    No, the last LUV was for the 1982 model year, not 1983. In 1982, you could buy the S Series truck and the LUV at a Chevrolet dealership, but by 1983, it was the S and T Series (there was no T series 4WD until 1983). This is paint code 0172 Glacier White exterior paint or code 808 Cameo White exterior paint. Looks like Katie the junkyard dog is making her rounds. Nah, GM emission decals said that for years. Look at any late 1970s GM emission decal and the language is verbatim on there. To all veterans, thank you for your service.
    So, why is it in a 1983 brochure you might say? Notice the name, "Series 12". That is the 1982 model year, so those are trucks that likely have a "C" for the 10th digit of the VIN and were being sold in 1983 as leftover 1982 models. In December 1983, GM destroyed 600 model year 1982 LUV trucks because they were stored in a rain prone/low lying area of Tampa, FL and had premature rusting of the frames. Rather than try to sell them, GM scrapped them. It worked like this: Series 1 was 1972, 2 was 1973, 3 for 1974, 4 for 1975, 5 for 1976, 6 for 1977, 8 for 1978 (skipping series 7), 9 for 1979, 10 for 1980, 11 for 1981, and 12 for 1982.
    No, that's an aftermarket add on. That's a Zemco wiper delay module. They were located for a time in Huntington Beach, CA and also at 12907 Alcosta Blvd. San Ramon, CA 94583. There's a tint shop at that address now.
    No, Mr. Nixon was out of office by 1976 (he was in office through August 9, 1974), and the 55 MPH speed limit was enacted by him on Janurary 2, 1974, not 1976. By 1976, Gerald Ford was president and then in 1976, Jimmy Carter won the election and was in office by January 1977. No, Congress gave the rights of speed limits back to the states in 1995 (December 8, 1995), not 1986 (or 1996) and it wasn't Mr. Reagan that did that, it was Congress.
    The 55 MPH speed limit spawned the song "I Can't Drive 55" by Sammy Hagar who actually wrote the lyrics to the song after getting a speeding ticket. Mr. Hagar stated that he had the lyrics as the cop was writing out the ticket (going 62 in a 55 MPH zone). He was in Albany, NY at the time, returning from a vacation in Africa. Mr. Hagar also drove a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am with a 403 Oldsmobile V8 engine with the CA vanity plate, "IEATZ28" on it. In 1979, Mr. Hagar along with KMEL radio personnel gave away a 1979 Trans Am at the now defunct Jim Troncatty Pontiac in Corte Madera, CA. Contestants pulled a set of keys out of a bowl and the set that started the car was the winner. It is unknown where that car is today. Being it was in CA, it was a 403 Olds V8 car as well.

      @@speedfreak8200 No, it was an Arizona truck from new. I think it was corrosion due to dissimilar metals, maybe. It was a long bolt through the water pump, which was aluminum, and into the block. Coolants weren’t as good back then, but it’s been over forty years so memories are a little dim! ✌🏼😎

    It was good of you to mention the "Kennedy 25% chicken tax" that I'm sure not many people knew about even at the time.
    I don't know if people remember which manufacturer made which small pickup trucks in the 70s and 80s for the U.S. market, so here goes:
    Isuzu = Chevy Luv / Isuzu Faster,
    Mazda = Ford Courier / Mazda B-Series,
    Mitsubishi = Dodge Ram 50 / Plymouth Arrow / Mitsubishi Forte and of course,
    Toyota = Toyota,
    Nissan = Datsun (620), a King Cab version of which I owned as my very first vehicle.
    As we're all aware the 70s was a dark time for horsepower but, I did what I could to get some decent performance out of my little 2 liter 4 cylinder.
    I first ripped out all of the smog crap which probably added up to a couple of hundred pounds, then I did all the usual things one could do to increase hp but, it was way more difficult to find aftermarket performance parts for my Datsun in the days before the internet.
    I was able to, after tons of investigative research, find almost everything I needed, for example, I installed dual Weber 45s and headers. Bob Sharp Racing was a big help for a lot of the things I wanted.
    I probably spent double again what the truck cost new in aftermarket stuff. I seemed to have gotten a package a week from good old J.C. Whitney & Co., the 1970s version of Amazon for cars.
    I'm proud to say I beat Porsche 914s and Mazda RX-7s quite regularly and even most V-6 powered American cars with a few V-8s as well.
    One correction: Nixon was long gone by 1976. It's not like you to slip up like that Steve.

    Back in the 80's, it was sold as Isuzu Rodeo in the Philippines, and it was a fairly good-looking truck at the time. I like the way they designed the front clip and 4X4 models have nice looking wheels looks similar to GM truck rally wheels.

    Those compact import trucks are the best! I tested each diesel one back in 1983 and went with the Mazda B2200 because at the time Mazda gave you the most bang for your buck on anything. These trucks were reliable and ran forever if you could keep them from rotting from salt. My 83 lasted until 99 and 579,000 miles later! Found another in Cypress CA in 2002 and have been driving it since! They should BAN the chicken tax and let Japan import these compact trucks again because they need to get back to their roots and offer cheap economical trucks instead of full sized gas guzzlers like Tundra and Titan etc that are insanely priced. The problem with the Isuzu was it used a C channel frame which didnt take much rot to compromise it and make it unsafe. The Mazda used a box frame which took longer. There were turds in the bunch, the gas Isuzus, Mitsubishis in general were bottom of the barrel in my opinion. Datsun made a great diesel truck but their beds and frames rusted quick as well but I think the Mazda and Datsun were the best, even better than Toyota. Both their diesel engines were clearly better built than Toyota. Toyota didnt give you much and made you pay dearly for it. The Toyota diesel I looked at had a plain interior like this Isuzu with rubber floor mat, vinyl seat, AM radio, sealed beam headlights, and BIAS PLY TIRES! The Mazda Sundowner diesel I ended up buying had carpeting, velour seat, halogen headlights, radial tires, two engine oil filters, oil cooler, fuel water separator, and the diesel was NO extra cost and it was $2000.00 cheaper than Toyota. The only option was the Clarion AM-FM radio for $225.00! These compact import trucks are hard to find now and bring big bucks for clean ones, and diesels are worth their weight in gold.

    These came in four wheel drive too and I never want to rebuild the front half shaft on one again unless someone else removes it. The hog rings that hold them into the side gear expand beyond any chamfer making them a royal pain to pop out. We chained the truck to a tree and used his work van to pull it out risking ripping the side of the housing out but at that point it was about to get crushed by the Cat he also had if it didn't come out.

    My dad bought a white 1984 P'up, very much like this one, used in 1988. It had those cheap ten hole chrome wheels when he bought it. I started driving in Jan. 1990 and thought it was a pretty slick truck. It was the mini-truck days and I had plans of "slamming" it and putting ground effects on it. Everybody else was into stereo systems. I wanted to skip that and swap a V8. It was a dependable truck with no power. The AC didn't work too well if the temperature was above 75 degrees outside. The heat worked ok if you put a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator. Dad traded it for a brand new Mazda B2200 in 1991 and I thought I hit the jackpot when he let me drive it.
