I'm Puerto Rican (in the mainland US) and nearly white passing, very little African blood, but Africa is present in nearly every aspect of my life. In the accent with which I speak Spanish, in the food that I eat, the way I dance, the way I worship. When I eat platano, and move to the beat of the drum, and pray to the Orishas, that's all West Africa. The richness of African cultures and the vastness of African influence on the world is undeniable.

i feel this a lot as well.
Here in South Africa, we have a major communist party, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), who fight for Marxist-Leninist ideals and black liberation, which is great! However, I cannot in good conscious support them considering how much the leader, Julius Malema, participates in a ton of self-flattery and cult of personality.
He has been seen wearing multiple designer cloths, some upwards of 300 000 rands ($20 486), censors any dissent of the party or him (even if it's from their own members) and recently even had tea (or more colliouqally, brunch) with the former president who has been disgraced for being an opportunist and corrupt leader (I literally cannot even put everything about the ex president Jacob Zuma in one comment). Oh! Halfway through typing this comment I looked up to remind me of Malema's other shit and he was quoted with saying "there’s a group of white right-wingers who are being trained by Jews in Pretoria to be snipers" which is not the first anti-semetic comment he made as well as him joking about someone accusing the former president of rape that she had a "nice time" with him because of some fucked up reasoning of her requesting breakfast and taxi money in the morning.
Even amongst a ton of leftist, people still reside within black and white thinking, that there is just a binary, when this is so, so far from the truth and actively harmful to the discussion. As much as I completely understand and support the EFF's political means, they also have a ton of problems in leadership and borderline dictatorship style that makes me feel I rather find a much better communist part (like the South African Communist Party or Zabalaza Anarchist Communist Front!)
So yeah, we need to be super open about all the problems with historical figures and not just go "okay they had bad shit but let's ignore that look what they represented!"

your videos are so incredibly informative, jargon free, accessible, and incredible visually. the concept of pan-africanism confused me until I watched this. In my U.S. history class the other day we talked about some advocates for the rights of black people in the progressive era (1897-1920). I was familiar with people such as W.E.B. Du Bois but one name that came up I hadn't heard was Marcus Garvey. I did a quick google search of his name and saw he was associated with pan africanism, which is something I knew nothing about (other than its name). When discussing Marcus Garvey he seemed more wary of supporting him which kinda confused me but wasn't explained. this definitely made me understand and also will help me so much going forward learning more about how black nationalist + liberation movements have differed in opinions and methods over time. thanks so much, your videos are some of my favorites

An issue with pan africanism relates to the shared culture as an example I have family who lives in egypt who spoke the same language ate the same food and the same culture as syria. They also weren't black but we're greek in that sense they had almost nothing in common with people of south africa but we're extremely close to the middle east and southern europe.

@@kvng7273 Africa is an extremely diverse region, a person from the Congo will find little in common with someone from Namibia. A black moroccoan will find there life almost identical to that of a Syrian, speaking the same language, most likely the same religion, eating the same food and having the same building style.
So how do you unite such desperate groups, how do unite such desperate groups when the only thing uniting people is nothing more then the abstractions of skin color? Is that even something you can convince people is worth uniting over? Many countries in Africa have fought wars between each other moreover there are immense wars over ethnicity of some cultural group attempting to gain independence from some nation, as an example south Sudan, or Central African Republic, or the Azwadi republic all fighting independence from some African country for national reasons and in this sense we see that the idea of Pan-Africanism and united black peoples in unity often doesn't triumph ethnic divisions, I mean why would it when such a label is so vague?
It's an answer which needs to be asked it's the core of Pan-Africanism, and every Pan-African writer has dealt with the answer to that question in there own unique way with there own unique solution. I am overall a supporter of some abstraction of pan-Africa in the ideal however in the practical sense it's a strange idea.

The problem with Africa is not the difference in our ethnic line is the failure to channel this difference into one common goal. Yes not all are going to be on board that is why is going to begin with some nationalities and ethnicities and then when others see the product of coming together the will join on the wagon. In his autobiography, Malcom X relates his family’s affection for Marcus Garvey and, in the opening chapter, describes meetings in his home led by his father and his father’s collection of photographs of Garvey. Noting the importance of these photographs, Malcolm (through coauthor Alex Haley) describes the situation as follows:
'I remember seeing the big, shiny photographs of Marcus Garvey that were passed from hand to hand...The pictures showed what seemed to me millions of Negroes thronged in a parade behind Garvey riding in a fine car, a big black man dressed in a dazzling uniform with a gold braid on it...I remember reading that he had followers not only in the United States but all around the world, and I remember my father saying, several times, and the people chanting after him, "Up, you mighty race, you can accomplish what you will."
As Malcolm goes on to discuss, his observation of these meetings was enormously enlightening to him, especially the recognition of the breadth of the black experience on a global scale. The importance of Africa was driven home, and the sense of a direction regarding the future of the black community was cemented, at least for a while, by the symbol of Garvey.

    Based on the sound of

Lets get one thing straight, ALL of your African and Caribbean "Pan Africanist" were birthed by Black America; therefore, the utopian fantasy concept known as Pan Africanist started in America and for the past 3 years, it has DIED IN AMERICA!!
NONE of your African and Caribbean Pan Africanist were created by Caribbean islands or African countries, you people have NEVER embraced Scam Africanism and I give your people credit for that!!
Pan Africanism is simply folklore, similar to race "black", IT DOES NOT EXIST anywhere and most recently the United States Supreme courts, as well as the American blacks, have made it very clear that it no longer exist in America!!
Here are the facts, the ONLY BLACK ETHNIC group on the planet are the American native born BLACKS, no one else.
Everyone else simply SELF IDENTIFY as race "black" in order to attach themselves to the History, Culture, Experiences, Struggles, Politics, Innovations, Social Contributions and LINEAGE of the BLACK AMERICANS because they haven't created, produced, demanded or fought for ANYTHING in modern history worth discussing.
Pan Africanism is DEAD in America; therefore, race "black" is DEAD!!!

      @99jdave99 Před 3 lety +6

@@Andrewism A list is a start, but I would definitely suggest you add some way to make finding the artist of a specific piece easier. At the very least, it would make sense for you include a sort of indexing system for the artwork. For instance, assigning a number to each artwork based on the artist, then having the list of artists numbered at the end. Even still, a google doc linking to a source of each image would be substantially more useful than a list of names, especially since you already found them yourself to put them in the video!
It's great that you list the artists, but if someone wants to find a specific artwork, a list of some 20 artists is pretty discouraging. Not everyone has time or energy to look for the specific artist for the artwork(s) they like, then comb through each artist's portfolio to find the specific artwork that they're interested in. Not to mention the issues with finding the "best" place to view their art (twitter? instagram? website? facebook? deviantart? somewhere else?).
I think your extremely excellent use of art is a core and really awesome part of the identity of this channel, and I enjoy your work a lot because of it (I mean, beyond the content itself), but the indexing and "findability" of the art you use is definitely lacking. I'd personally love to look at some of the artists you use more, but the "big list of names" method is really overwhelming to me and discourages me from looking into it more than anything because the thought of the searching grind turns me off pretty hard.
Beyond this though, great vid; pan-africanism is a very cool philosophy I hope to see expand and gain traction again in my lifetime!

Hypothetically.. if there was a working artist with some money to invest in african land to live and work on but also create some kind of community/environmental conservation/animal protection projects. What would be the best country to do this in? I would love to hear people's thoughts on this .
I'm thinking of an animal sanctuary next to a art studio space for local creatives to have a free/cheap place to work (possibly in return for minimal assistance on the land in return). Perhaps there could be a shop for sale of the art works if the artists desire.

Speak to leaders within those communities, don't take the colonialist route of thinking you know what's best for a community. I think it would be important to know who you were working with, what they want/ what future they want for further generations. Listening and collaboration is essential, that is the failure of so many governments providing social services within their own country there is no one size fits all approach, listen and learn and you might be able to put that money to good use.

This is a brilliant content and one that should be watched by all African peoples, across the globe. My main critique is I felt you were heavy-handed with your critique of M.Garvey (I mean, you may not be a fan of the man's approach but at least the man made significant strides. Tell me, what strides did the likes of OAU make? I don't mean to be rude, but what material stride have you made towards the collective liberation?) Also, we need to remember that there's no such thing as a perfect solution/approach and looking for such solutions will only further hault progress and encourage inaction, across the board/generations.
