It wasn't merely the apostles who believed they were living in apocalyptic times; Jesus did--sonething Rose doesn't mention at the beginning of his talk. They got that idea from him, who prophesied--mistakenly--that the end would come during his contemporaries' lifetimes. It didn't happen then and it never will--not in the way Christians imagine.

You need to read the Words of Jesus again. He told the disciples when they saw the signs He mentioned, the end was not yet.
Perhaps, you are here mainly to sow doubt. Doing your father's bidding.

@@naturallyric84 Doing "my Father's [Satan's] bidding, " am I? Oh, please. The meaning of Matthew 16:27-28 is perfectly obvious. Quit trying to save your savior; he's dead and gone, never to return.

    • @williamlarochelle6833
      @williamlarochelle6833 Před 25 dny

@@naturallyric84 In Matthew 24, Jesus is warning his disciples of what was to occur during THEIR lifetimes--not ours or those who'll come after us.. (Since it isn't possible to italicize on youtube, I'm going to use caps instead.)
The discples ask him, "Tell us . . . what will be the sign of your coming and of the close of the age?" (v. 3). Jesus replies that THEY should take heed, that THEY should beware, that THEY will hear of wars, that THEY shouldn't be alarmed (vv. 4-6). THEY will be delivered up and put to death (v. 9).
In v. 14 Jesus tells them that the Gospel of the kingdom will be preached "throughout the whole world, as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come." But I regard those words as contradicting Mt. 16:27-28, which speak undeniably of Judgment Day coming within the lifetimes of his hearers.
He goes on to tell them that THEY will see the desolating sacrilege spoken of by Daniel (v. 15); that THEY are to pray their flight isn't in winter (v. 20). In vv. 23-24 he warns THEM that false prophets will arise. "LO, I have told YOU beforehand" (v. 25) Don't YOU believe what they say (v. 26). When YOU see all these things (enumerated in previous verses), "YOU know that he (the Son of man) is near, at the very gates. Truly, I say to YOU, THIS GENERATION will not pass away till all these things take place" (vv. 33-34). It's perfectly obvious that he's not referring to a time thousands of years in the future, but to his own.
In verse 36 he says that no one knows the day or the hour of his coming--not even him, but the Father only. But that doesn't mean he didn't know that it would occur sometime during the lifetimes of his contemporaries.
In verses 37-39, he explains that the Son of man will come as in the days of Noah--but I deny the historicity of Noah, the ark, and the flood. I think Jesus was simply wrong. There's not a smidgen of evidence of any of it.
YOU "watch therefore, for YOU do not know on what day your Lord is coming" (v. 42). YOU "must be ready" for he will come at an hour "YOU do not expect" (v. 44).
It makes no sense that Jesus would've warned his disciples and everyone else he preached to on the matter if he didn't think the end would come in THEIR lifetimes. If he knew that it would happen in 2024 or at some later time, there would've been no need to warn THEM.
Now, tell me the following NT verses speak of the Parousia occurring thousnads of years in the future rather than during the lifetimes of Jesus' contemporaries:
"The Kingdom of God is near . . ." (Mark 1:14-15; also Matthew 4:17).
"Truly I say to you, there are some standing here who will not taste death before they see the Son of Man coming in his Kingdom" (Matthew 16:28; also Mark 9:1 and 13:30; also Luke 9:27 and 21:32)
"Truly, I say to you, THIS generation will not pass away till all these things take place" (Matthew 24:34).
" . . . truly, I say to you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel [preaching the Gospel], before the Son of man comes" (Matthew 10:23).
"But I tell you, hereafter you [Caiaphas and the assembled scribes and elders] will see the Son of man seated at the hand of Power, and coming on the clouds of heaven" (Matthew 26:64, also Mark 14: 62)
"Now is the judgment of this world. Now shall the ruler of this world be cast out" (John 12:31).
" . . .brethren, the appointed time has grown very short . . . the form of this world is passing away" (1 Corinthians 7:29, 31; also, Romans 13:11-12).
      " . . . the end of the ages has come" (1 Corinthians 10:11).
      " . . . the Lord is at hand" (Philippians 4:5) (1 Thessalonians 4:16-17)
      " . . . in these last days [God] has spoken to us by a Son . . ." (Hebrews 1:1-2).
" . . . he has appeared once for all at the end of the age to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself" (Hebrews 9:26).
" . . . you see the Day is drawing near" (Hebrews 10:25).
" . . . the coming of the Lord is near . . . the Judge is standing right at the door" (James 5:8,9).
"The end of all things is at hand" (1 Peter 1:20, 4:7).
"Children, it is the last hour . . . it is the last hour" (1 John 2:18)
      " . . . the time is near" (Revelation 1:3).
      " . . . behold, I am coming quickly . . . the time is near . . I am coming quickly . . .Yes, I am coming quickly" (Revelation 22:7, 10, 12, 20).
2 "Peter" 3 attempts to reply to the scoffers living around the end of the 1st century who complained of the fact that Jesus hadn't yet returned (v. 4) by asserting, lamely, "that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slow about his promise as some count slowness, . . . " (vv. 8-9) Yeah, right, uh-huh. Fact is, no other NT writer wrote about the Parousia in that way. The words of "Peter" are an egregious example of damage control. Jesus spoke to his hearers using terms THEY understood--otherwise, he would've been engaging in deception.
