    Lyrics:
Breathing from a hole in my lung
    I had no one
But faces in front of me
Racing through the void in my head
    To find traces
    Of a good luck academy
    Ooh, Ooh, Ooh
Sparks ignite and trade them for thought
    About no one
    And nothing in particular
Washed the sickened socket and drove
    Resent nothing
There's good will inside of me
    Ooh, Ooh, Ooh
Wake me up lower the fever
    Walking in a straight line
Set me on fire in the evening
    Everything will be fine
Waking up strong in the morning
    Walking in a straight line
    Lately I'm a desperate believer
But walking in a straight line
    Something I will never forget
    I felt desperate
    And stuck to the marrow
    Invisible to everyone else
    I'm a sex change
And a damsel with no heroine
    Ooh, Ooh, Ooh
Wake me up lower the fever
    Walking in a straight line
Set me on fire in the evening
    Everything will be fine
Waking up strong in the morning
    Walking in a straight line
    Lately I'm a desperate believer
But walking in a straight line
I don't need no time to say
    There's no changing yesterday
    If we keep talking and
I keep walking in straight lines
Wake me up lower the fever
    Walking in a straight line
Set me on fire in the evening
    Everything will be fine
Waking up strong in the morning
    Walking in a straight line
    Lately I'm a desperate believer
But walking in a straight line

I have literally been trying to find this damned song for nearly 10 years. It played once on either MTV2 or Fuse I believe one day when I was skipping class back in high school and I didn't write their name down in time. Every time I'd try and explain the uplifting tempo of the song, the look of the frontman, or the setting & movement of the video, people would always tell me in a matter-of-fact fashion that I was looking for the song "Fix You" by Coldplay. No matter which of my musician friends I asked or which forum I submitted a query to, everyone always gave me that same song & band as an answer, and I would always tell them they were dead wrong. I even went as far as finding & scouring archived program schedules for MTV2 & Fuse from 2005 to 2009 trying to find ANY picture or name that would point me in the right direction, but to no avail. Flash forward to today, where I'm doing music curation for the music platform I work for VIBBIDI, and in the suggested videos for Swervedriver I see the cover-image of this video. I haven't felt this accomplished in years, and I'm ecstatic that this song still sounds good to me so many years later.

I know exactly what you mean. I tried to explain a Muse song (didnt know the band) maybe year 2000 to real muso head friends, no one got me, then we all got to see Muse in around 2005 and I was like - there you go! This is who I was talking about! Muse wouldnt be one of my favourites but it was just one song stuck in a moment, stuck in my head! Glad you found it. It's a profound song and he literally means "walking in a straight line" after being debilitated by reactive arthritis and on a wheelchair!

Totally! I was too immature to appreciate the genius behind this song and the album when it came out. I think I was 17.
When you're young, you wear your music like fashion. You make it a part of your identity. And are militant to defend it. And, well, heaven forbid an artist introduces you to something unexpected!
Luckily, for some of us, musical taste matures, we explore and wander. Broadening our depth. Allowing ourselves to be surprised and delighted by new musical experiences.
It's only then, that you reach musical nirvana. Amen!

I was 20 when they came outta nowhere & blew up so massively. Liked em but wasnt as swept up as many others were. This song, however many years later really grabbed me. They now sounded like a band that found their own groove. Brilliant!

This is clearly a well done song -- it's drastically different from some of my favorites from Silverchair however I can see how people can really like this number. It's not really for me but I feel some of the magic Daniel Johns was referring to when he plays with his band. He's being true to himself and I certainly can't fault him for that! I think that's all we could ever ask of the artists we patronize.

I'm an Aussie and my ex is an American. I'd played her a bunch of old Aussie standards, bands like Cold Chisel, Icehouse, Midnight Oil, The Models, really good stuff. She was a bit underwhelmed though she loved John Farnham's _You're The Voice._
She asked me to play her what I thought was a truly great song from an Australian band.
So, yeah, I played her this.
I explained it was a song about kicking an addiction. She was quickly attentive and almost stunned. She got goosebumps all over when the guitars finally came in. Then she was dancing and laughing. It made a tremendous and lasting impression on her. Straight Lines has a raw power and warm energy that's accessible to anyone at all who's ever faced addiction, hardship, grief, loss or emotional pain. It's beautifully healing and wonderful, it speaks of hope and love and speaks straight to the heart.

My friend lived in HB and we were great buddies, never a bad day hanging with him. He loved my old band from way back, I've since moved on and the players have changed over the years but we are reforming to the version he loved the best for his celebration of life, he suddenly passed away a month ago. He loved music, playing guitar and sipping some Tequila. This song will always remind me of one of my best friends.......RIP Carl

2023-08-23, more or less at 10:00 PM, is the day i finally found this song again, after 16 years of only able to keep wondering of what i was just listened that day, why i can't forget it, why it keep staying in my mind, why i always feel that i need and must find this song again, and why i never hear this song being played anywhere and everywhere i go.
I only get ONE chance to listen to this song before. it was in 2007 on MTV Channel. Watched it at noon and i don't have any idea about this Band at the time but i still remember the MTV's host explained something about this band before they played the music.
She said that this Band just released a new album but with different genre/flavour than they usually do and also with some controversy around it. Then the song start playing, and i instantly hooked by the music instrument, the vocal and how he sing it, especially at reff, i can feel the energy of the song, it sound strange at first, but then it become so emotional!
Then in the middle of the song, the name of the Band and song title appeared at the bottom of my 17inch TV screen, i sit far from it, so i get up and run fast to my TV to be able to read it clearer, but as soon as i stand in front of it, it suddenly disappeared and i missed the chance to read...
Since then, everytime i watched MTV channel, i'm always hoping for the channel to play this song again, but sadly it never appeared again...
I heard it only once but i can remember the reff melody until now, i can whistle it but didn't know the lyric even just single words, my english still very poor at that time i can't catch it and there's no lyric displayed.
I ask my friends about it & i'm whistling awkwardly like an idi*t to give them some clue but they just laughed and can only mentioned Coldplay or Good Charlotte, yes that "i just wanna live" reff is a lil bit similar by the way it sound. And the most stupid thing i did is whistling at Shazam hoping that it will recognize the song 😥👍
In 2015 it come close, when i'm explored Carpark North songs (i already know them since 2006, but only know "Human" song back then).
In their 'Grateful' album, i got some flashes of it when i listened to their 'Save Me From My Self", a song in which i really liked, and it do sound a bit familiar too tbh, the energy it have.
After that, i still trying to find this song again and again sometimes, listening to other 2000s band but still unlucky.
Yesterday, at night, i was in a very good mood to start exploring some of 2000's Rock music compilation album/playlist again, Silverchair was also there in the playlist. I listened to their "Tomorrow" song, even tho i didn't feel there's any hints of it or any similarities in the melody of the song, but it's the video clips that makes me so intrigued to explore their other songs somehow, it do feels so familiar in my memory, it feels like i ever seen it before!
So i search their other songs on CZcams, listen to the second song "Ana's Song", i feel relax, but i do really, really feel something surprising will come, then the third songs start playing........ i'm in total silence.. speechless, what a pleasant surprise where i finally able to hear that rhythm again, that voice, that reff, that unique melody, i almost can't believe of what i just heard.. teardrops.
I'm so sorry for this long text and i'm very thankful if you read it, i just wanna share my little pure happiness. This is the song that i really, really want to hear and enjoy again!
16 years has passed since the first time that was also the only chance i get to listen to this song that never appear again, that somehow it always stay in my mind, my memory & never disappeared.
Now i found it again, i keep it forever.
"Straight lines" was already my Fav song, along with "Macy's Day Parade" from Green Day. The different is, now i can listen to it anytime 😇
I thank you so much for this music from the bottom of my heart, Silverchair.

One day I was listening to some grunge and post grunge stuff and Freak came on, then on the side a video talking about the history of the band came up. Talking about how their sound changed when they got older, so I decided to check some out to see just how different they got. Clicked on this song and those beginning notes played, it triggered something. This is that song that's been stuck in my head for all those years, I've heard this song long before their early stuff. I was an Australian journalist living in London in the early 2000s. I was asked to interview Daniel and a guy called Paul Mac because they had a new album out as the Dissociatives. I actually already new Paul via the Sydney gay scene - he was a lovely bloke. So I was excited to see him and excited to meet Daniel. Anyway, I was early so I was wondering around in the gated gardens of the record company. About an hour in and everything running late, I see Daniel on a little bridge in the gardens - he's supporting himself with a cane and is as directionless as I am. I went over, obviously, and etc ensued. We went up to a depressing room with depressing sunlight and waited for Paul. He was really late. Paul turns up in sunglasses indoors and - not only doesn't recognise me - kind of rock star dismisses me. I swallowed it and moved forward. Johns sits in a chair, bent over a glass of water that he's dipping a lollypop into. Paul Mac is being a dick. I end up ignoring Mac and recommending an album called 'Blue Sunshine' by The Glove. Daniel is interested. I don't remember if I published anything about The Dissociatives in the end. I probably did. But, that album and the lollypop in the water serves as a good metaphor for that project

OMG I watched this when I was high. Here are my thoughts... As I grew older I lost consciousness of the beautiful things that connect me to this world. My mind is a mess but there is still a flower in there which just needs to be watered. I need to clear my mind of all the useless thoughts. I also needs to forgive those who I constantly think of negatively and move on. Something pure inside of me is wanting to come out. I wake up tomorrow free from my past sickness and I am calm. I gain a passion for something and I am mindful of its future success. I am strong and I feel competent. My mind is connected to godly thinking and I am walking in a straight line. I will never forget how disconnected I was. I was weak and had no strength of character. Cut ties with the past. Talk to that cool guy named God as you walk confidently in a straight line. This is a time capsule which I will read again when I am not high. Thank you Silverchair for your nice lyrics.

Been listening to this song this week! I remember when it came out, I thought it was too "contemporary" for my teenage soul at the time. Now 32, wow I love it. Thank you Daniel, thank you Silverchair.

I remember listening to this song obsessively in the summer of 2007 after getting sober and facing a whole new reality. I saw Silverchair when they came to Seattle in 1997, I was 14, they were not much older than me❤️‍🔥

Saw them twice on thiis tour. One in Orlando House of Blues and the other in Mobile, Alabama. I didn’t particularly love this CD, but I appreciated it. The best concert of my life was seeing them in NYC at the Bowery ballroom in 2002, 2003. Bought the tickets on eBay. I was senior in high school. Ended up driving to NYC alone to see them for the across the night tour. What an experience

I'll tell you something else too. Playing this song versus listening to this song is totally different experience. If you have the chance to grab an instrument and play along with him while he's singing, this song transforms into so much more. Then just listening to it. I can't explain that I'm doing my best though have a great day.
