People don't know a good drummer when they see one. A good drummer needs to be balanced and have a style that fits in with the band. What made Ringo Starr so great was that he fit in very well with the rest of the band, and don't play too hard when the band played soft. You don't need to be Wild to be good. Ringo is the perfect example.

Good point. I think that point could be illustrated by the stories of read about the competition between ginger baker and the bassist ( name slips my mind) in the group creme. Ginger for all the talent he had was a bit arrogant from what I read. Ringo on the other hand was the glue that held the band together both personality wise and musically.

this is why most drummers respect ringo. many drummers will go for ass kicking fast drum rolls while ringo would go for cool epic drum beats sort of.

BlueFox94 This is true. He received more letters than any other Beatle and is still probably the most popular Beatle now as he was then. I'd like to be able to be LIVING at his age, let alone playing the drums and running at 75.
***** Still, as much as I am a Beatles fan, it confuses me as to how Ringo is the most popular of the four. I guess that's just a testament to how the band didn't emphasize one member over the other and treating each other as equals. And, while their breakup was definitely turbulent, that "treating each other as equals" did soon foster a sense of individuality that couldn't co-exist with them as a band. Man, it would've been nice if they had pulled off that reunion that some of them were thinking of at the time of John's murder. I believe even he or Paul confided close to the end of the '70s that they've spent enough time each doing their own thing (which includes becoming the only music group whose individual members achieved American number one singles) and that it was perhaps time to get back together, even just for a little while. I like it when bands do that thing--have their career together, then disperse when times began to change, then do their own things, then come back sporadically but with purpose to make music better than the old days using the experience they gained as solo artists to grow musically. Ah well, at least they had their decade. And at least the three pulled together to make Anthology. RIP John and George.

Those are Ludwig drums, and Ringo has been known to use other brands of hardware. While he was with The Beatles he had his Ludwig kick drum fitted with a Rogers tom mount. It's just what worked for him. Ringo is awesome, always has been and always will be.
