    I've experienced knee issues if I go back to wearing heel drop shoes for too long playing bball. There is exception where a drop shoe can work though for us zero droppers and that's usually if the heel has high compression. Not saying it works long term, but did okay for me in the short term while waiting for my first pair Altras. Thanks for your review! I'm excited to try Topos for the first time. Will for sure go with zero drop option, based off of your experience as I think we have the same level of drop sensitivity.

      NICE! I love my Runventures (the zero drop Topo trailrunner). I actually used them in my recent 50k instead of my Altra Mont Blancs becaue I trusted the Topos more in the nasty conditions we were going to have (snow, mud, etc.!). You'll have to let me know how they work out for you!

      Thanks, Dave! Ya, the knee issue for me seemed to be related to the drop of the shoe I was using. No issues since I went back to 100% zero drop. But every set of legs and gait is different. Certainly no 'one shoe fits all' out there. I can tell you that if Topo had a zero drop version of this, I would buy it sight unseen!

    Just discovered this brand. I also need a wide toe box and, well, it's been difficult! Men's Altra LP and Olympus are too narrow for this gal. My met heads and toes still get squeezed a bit. I've tried on so many Hoka wides that I think I've given up on them (men's Speedgoat4, 2E, is decent - the widest shoe I could find. In blue/red. But you have to get the "right" color as the width seems to change with the color.
    I wish I knew how the width on this shoe compared to the Speedgoat 4.
    I'm probably going to be exploring this brand and possibly New Balance.

    My topo mtn Racers "1" lost it at the sole seam a lot sooner than I thought they would. I was pretty rough on them, river crossings and heat so watch out for that. :) I also got knee pain and Plantar Fasciitis when I switched off zero drop completely. Think that could be it?

    • @DoseofDirt
      @DoseofDirt  Před 2 lety

      Interesting! I never tried the 1s but have heard the 2s are an improvement. Yes, I think the knee pain came from doing long runs in this 5mm drop after conditioning my body to zero drop for years and years. So that’s not a knock on the shoe (unless you need a zero drop shoe). Unfortunately it means I won’t be using them since zero drop is what works for me.

      Thanks

    • @DoseofDirt
      @DoseofDirt  Před 2 lety +1

      @@richt3993 When you say the Lone Peak was too "thin" are you talking about the stack height? Width? Or the materials?
      Here's the zero drop shoes I have and like, along with the draw backs:
      Lone Peak - It is by far the widest trail runner in the toe box. I don't like the outsole (not Vibram) and the materials aren't super durable. But they are comfortable right out of the box
      Topo Runventure 3 (the 4 is out now) - It is zero drop, but only a 20mm stack, so I wasn't sure it would be good for long runs. But I did my first 50k in them and they were great! They are super durable so far and have a Vibram outsole. Only thing I don't love about them is that they aren't as wide in the toe box as the Lone Peak (But definitely wider than the G270
      Lems Primal Pursuit - This feel a bit clunkier than the Lone Peak or Runventure. They have more of a casual run feel than a race feel. Honestly I like them for backpacking and hiking more than running, but they are super durable, nice and wide in the toe box.
      I have tried tons of other
      -Olympus - narrow in the midfoot and to bulky underfoot
      -Mt Blanc - Can't get a good fit around the ankle and let in tons of little rocks. Might be better with gaiters
      -Timp - Could barely get my foot in
      -Superior - super comfortable, but only works for runs less than 6-7 mile for me. Outsole isn't good (not Vibram)
      One I REALLY want to try
      -Topo has a new zero drop trail runner with a higher stack height - the Pursuit. It has 28mm of stack height and all the other things I love about the Topo Runventure 3
      Would love to hear about others you try. Like I said, the G270 is AWESOME just wish it was a tad wider for my feet, but every foot is different.

    • @DoseofDirt
      @DoseofDirt  Před 2 lety +1

      Hey Kevin! Unfortunately I’m a little too paranoid to wear them trail running because of how my gait seems to have adapted to zero drop. I was plagued with knee issues before discovering zero drop shoes and long runs in this one seemed to bring them back. Which was a massive bummer.
      I have been trying Topos runventure 3, which I am loving because it has a zero drop. But the toe box doesn’t seem as wide as my altra lone peaks were and it’s only a 20mm drop, so may not work on long runs.
      So far I haven’t had great success finding a true wide toe box, zero drop shoe that feels as good as the Altra Lone peaks did. Ugh!

      @@DoseofDirt thanks so much for your detailed response! I really appreciate it! I am trying to figure out a similar thing, I have been running in altras for about 10 months. I run ultras and at the end of the races my feet are usually killing me to the point that I want more cushion so I’ve tried non zero drop (hokas/new balance) and once I switch from zero drop it feels a little unnatural and I think it causes an issue with my knee as well. I want to try the lone peaks as I’ve run in the timps and they have awful durability. I haven’t been able to find anything else that has cushion and zero drop. I use the superior 5s now but I had a sizing issue with them. I am going to try a pair of topos and see if the wide toe box helps with the knee pain. @@KevinHoegler I put my foot in a pair of Timps recently and can tell you that the LP toe box is A LOT roomier. I don't know if it's wider or not, but there is a lot more 'head room' in the LP. I honestly can't even use the Timps because of how low it is over the toes. The new LPs look to be more durable than my LP 4.5s (and more than the timps). I think the 6 may be coming out next month.
      You're right--trying to find something with good cushion and zero drop seems tough. I haven't found one with a stack height more than 20mm yet (other than Altras). Which is fine for shorter runs, but I don't think I could do an Ultra with that kind of stack height...
