What always confuses me is the need for roads. The cars are clearly capable of flying.

I'd like to see you do the same scenario with mods.
Probably only take one episode.
It would show how exactly how difficult vanilla is.
On the other hand, playing with despawning turned off would probably have the traffic flow down to single figures within 10 minutes...
Biffa, makes a massive cycle route and then destroys it.
Classic urbanism honestly, make a brand new amazing cycle path and immediately destroy it 3 month later with a road widening right in the middle

Seriously. You also dont need bike lanes on every road, cuz the Cims are fine with biking on the sidewalk for short distances. Bike lanes on major roads, or a bike path paralleling them also works. the extra lanes for the assymetrical roads did nothing. Those slips lanes and bypass ramps did more harm than good.
A lot of walking paths over the road were eliminated.
The highway off-ramps have a higher speed than the avenue, so that may have encouraged off-on behavior.

Wow, this sure was a challenge. That policy boosting people to arrive was absolutely nuking everything. So many roundabouts deleted but yeah, with Vanilla is harder to make them work and dedicated lanes can only be achieved by increasing or decreasing the number of lanes. No Hugo either to help you. I would love to see you fixing this city with mods though. Incredible feat, Biffa. Congratulations đđ

You remembered how you won the Metropolis Challenge two years ago! You went all out with converting every road into a bicycle road. The number of cyclists went way up. Oh, and you only had 30 minutes to pull it off!
If this traffic challenge teaches anything, it's the same wrong thing vanilla traffic always teaches: "throw more lanes at it and the red will go away". :/
Congrats Biffa! This was so fun to watch this scenario! I wish there were more ârealisticâ scenarios of towns and buildings and things like this. Building a city in a blank empty wilderness can be fun but I like this kind of challenge!
Congratulations! That really felt impossible for the vast majority of the time, especially with how claustrophobic that main highway was from the start. I'm guessing you made it with 40ish weeks to spare? I don't normally enjoy scenarios as much as the playthrough vids but this one was challenging and complex enough to have me hooked the whole way through đ (Also the slightly earlier video fitted into my day perfectly, not sure if that was accidental but thank you đ)
All of this was a fun watch. All your asymmetrical road fixes at the end were helping in the long run with the overpasses so not everyone was heading through the intersections, but also making the bicyclers that had been using they highway bicycle lanes have to stop and turn back around, so probably a lot of the loss as you were doing that was folks going back to their cars. But you did manage to make it in the end, so definite congratulations.

On vanilla/console, traffic lights work best with "Y" intersections. Just an fyi for the peeps.

Congratulations! đ this was fantastic! Just got into skylines and Iâm loving these, modded and unmodded, it all helps me understand things!
As you can add the underground roads, Iâd go max with it and draw in two parallel and separate highways underneath the city with links in between and have access points popping up in key places in the city. Take the weight off the main highway on topâŠ. :).

Wow that was nuts! I've seen some people not quite make it - was cheering along as you went with the bike lanes everywhere! On a totally side note, I really liked seeing how much of that water pollution you cleaned up!

I think maybe if you use the 7 lane asymmetrical road it would give dedicated turn lanes for 6 lane roads. In vanilla lane mathematics kinda works by adding lanes for dedicated turn lanes.
You could also check the node spacing is not too close to sometimes fix horkey borkey laney switching

Thanks well done Biffa, very enjoyable. I think if you had put the bridge roads from one side to the other earlier, you may have saved some time! Also you wouldn't of had to destroy your cycle routes (which were being well used).
GL with the big relocation Biffa. Just relocated a few thousand miles closer to the equator myself. My bucket list shares an item with John Cleese: "Never be cold again". I didn't have to worry about the kiddly winkies though, so I don't envy you
Nice work! I replaced that main road with a 6 lane monorail road, with 6 or 7 stops along the way, and made all the intersections service interchanges to keep traffic flowing on the main road. This was a tough scenario!
Wow! Getting it in quite under the wire there. I was kinda impressed by how well bike lanes work- I use them all the time and know how useful they are, but there's a definite perspective difference in planning bicycle routes vs. just watching the traffic evaporate when they're added around a city without them.
But I will say I think leaving in the bypasses was probably not helping the traffic flow. It was, in every situation, making three junctions real close to one another, and then cars were getting stuck in the bypass that they were mostly using because as a highway piece it was faster than the six lane road. Simply having that traffic funnel through the traffic lights probably would have been better for flow than cars stuck on bypasses.

@Biffa, managed to pass this on vanilla without underground HW.
I used 2+2 connected highways (same as in your play through). Used asymmetrical highways to connect different districts and exits from HW used 1 node of ramp + node of 2lane 1 way road. They almost stopped to take turns on the main HW.
Also more subways between districts. Some edge districts were connected together with several connections going through different districts in the middle of the city (1 line going left side, 1 through city center, 1 going right side). And some local district bus lanes with 1 or 2 stops in adjacent district.
For me main problem was to get the population to rise. Residential was always in low demand, and high demand for shops
Fine work Biffa. But then we wouldn't expect any less of you! đ I agree with other comments that you should do it again with mods, just to see how much quicker and more efficiently you can do it. Maybe not for a while though. I'd like to see some more Blightea if I'm being honest. Particularly now with the stadiums DLC... đ

Biffa added extra challenge to himself by not reading carefully the challenge details. It says you need to meet ALL of the losing conditions in any order to lose so there is NO time limit.
in all the other years of Biffa's traffic fixing removing desperate tunnels Biffa places them himself (still a good video)
i love this series but some choices just give me a proper headache I cant hahah
I'm not gonna lie, i was so anxious for most of the video until 36:26 when you finally corrected the direction of that lane.
As someone who loves tunnel bypasses in my cities I can't complain too much about it. But I don't think its very realistic to this challenge since tunnels are super expensive in the real world. I've been trying to get out of the habit personally. All that said I'm amazed you made it this far without your head exploding without mods.

Hello Bethan I just watched who said you suggesting about the tunnel from one side to the other side of the Map that the highway and have other connection straight through to really come and hand date and then you can connect it straight down to the ocean area and then have one like couple in the changes of top and make a really niceđ đ đ

in a cargo train station, in the location right of the map, you have put an one way road to come in and forgot to put a road to came out.
IMO for challenges like this it's good to have the eminent domain mod (obviously this was modless-ish). Can still clear existing houses, but you'll be spending a premium on each one.
I wish there was a built in traffic manager available for consoles. Like its your city so you should be able to control how a road would work and function. Hope the second game includes something like this

Do you mean despawning or really deleting everything? Because despawning was on because you can't turn it off without TMPE.

Huh, I haven't played in a while; Could you do one way highway on grade and then make the opposite direction mirrored underground? The purpose being a more compact footprint with more lanes available.

Hey Biffa, At about 31 minutes is when you showed the statistic of going from 7 up to like 1400-ish cyclists, I would have been interested to see if this made the number of pedestrians go down as well as the number of cars go down as a result? are pedestrians also factored in as well as cars in vanilla?

You honestly play this game so much I feel like you should know where most if not everything is (within menus) with no problem and yet you struggle in most of your videos to find a simple highway road. The lack of attention to detail is lacking. Love your content and builds just seems like you're getting to relaxed and I want you on your tippy toes.
You did not replace the paths over the road so they will probably add more cars plus the underground highway has no connection into the middle of the city fot those to get in or out
You cooled of added the promote cycling policy and free public transport policy but otherwise, well done
