Milking Rosie on the 7th day

- Rosie is much easier to milk now. She has become used to the milking routine - and I am getting better at milking her small teats. She makes about 6 litres a day now - which we and the calf share.

Katrine, These are my favorite videos! I love milking too! Is such an intimate and quiet time. The entire experience is overwhelming of all senses, from the smell of hay, to the steam frothy warm milk, to the warmth of the cow udder and belly, is such a gift to be able to experience such beauty. Will her teats get longer with time? I have experienced that with goats if you strip them for consecutive days during early lactation stretching their teats they elongate making it possible to grasp eventually.

Six litres! That sounds like a good amount to manage. You have trained both the cow and calf so well...she seems very happy to be milked now. I have thought along the same lines as you, Katrine, in regard to crossing my Jersey with a beef breed to hopefully get a dual purpose calf who will still give creamy Jersey milk. I plan to mate Charlotte with a red Lowline which is a miniature Angus. I look forward to hearing about your cow breeding plans. Have you heard of Mary Jane Butters? We just got a milking cow(heifer) She's due to calf in October. I've never milked a cow before so it's so neat to watch you milk from the start. Any tips you have for milking, moving calf off, any of it is so appreciate!! Your videos are so sweet. I just love watching you with your cows💖

Oh thank you so much Saundra! How great you`re going to be a milking maid too! Well moving the calf - is just taking it away. Already at 3 weeks start feeding a tiny bit of molasses - and rolled barley or other grain - I put it into Mary`s mouth with my finger - she is getting to like it. Also cuddle and be very loving - This way the calf will get tolove you - and all will be easy later on.. The calf does really not need that much milk - especially when it starts eating grass - but of course some is necessary. Mary is already drinking 3,5 litres a day. We will share 50-50 till she is 5 mths then I will wean her - but this can be done in many ways. All the best with your animals and milking! Bless you Love katrine

lovely the way you connect with your cows by singing but why calf is not present earlier?
Thank you my friend! Oh I just milk out the first milk - and then let the calf on - to make the cow release her milk properly. If I let the calf on first - the cow might still be holding back the milk. This seems to be the best way to get the most milk. Bless you my friend! Love Katrine

How do you use all the milk?
Well I make clabber and drink that - as well as the fresh milk. When I have alot of milk I make feta cheese, whey and ghee also. Bless you dear Linea! Love Katrine

What does the ear tag do ?
Here in the EU - there are very strict rules about ear taging. Every animal has it`s own identity - and has to be registered in the system. It is a bit sad - but so it is. Bless you dear! Love Katrine
