For centuries, nomads have wandered the unforgiving plains of the Sahara, guided by natural beacons and in tune with the desert's cycles. But desertification is threatening their traditional way of life. The Sahara advances by six miles a year, consuming oases, water wells and engulfing whole cities. In this stunning documentary, nomadic women tell their stories. Filmed in a cinema-verité style, it's a poignant study of a vanishing way of life.

I am from west africa and I can honestly say the diversity of Africa never ceases to amaze me. There is more genetic diversity in Africa than any other continent. For example, there are about one million genes not shared between the bushmen in southern africa Nelson Mandela of south Africa

you speak such truth with this point. indeed it is wonderful to see a non-enthographic style examination and actual interviews with of a group people in this region. its good that they are allow to speak for themselves. african people are often, it seems, made "voiceless" (and thus, mindless?) by western media coverage. peace.

the western media doesn't show africa in this way. they only talk about war and diease. and they don't show the various ethnicities and cultures throughout africa.

@sweetab24 Well they are not speaking Tamasheq which is the language of the Kel-Tamasheq (Touareg) so no, they are Hassaniya or Black Arab. Their language is not quite the same as Arabic spoken in the middle east. I don't really understand it, but I do know this, even though I do not understand their language, I am from the Same region as them the Sahel/Sahara, and I know the beauty of the desert,. I jwish the Light Skin Arabs in Mauritania were less racist to all those who are black in Mauri

Water is scarce. Tea is precious. The tea water mixed with livestock milk. To extend the liquid intake further and add nutrition.
The genders operate in separate stations. It works best. Roles. There is actually much precision in life. They are extremely focused, yet in a relaxed way. Life living moment to moment is like a meditation. They experience such a self oneness with the environment, the world.

Most of the people in the film were speaking Arabic. The woman at the end indeed speaks in French. I understood when she spoke. She has a good accent in French too!
A good bit of West Africa was colonized by the French. So quite a few of the people know French. They speak Arabic or the Tuareg language the rest of the time.
I liked this film, and liked the people. They seem to be very decent and good.

What language is this? It reminds me quite a lot of Arabic, is it a dialect? The woman at the end sounded like she was speaking French, or something influenced by French.
