Logic 10.5 Step Sequencer for Drums | Logic Pro X 10.5 Step Sequencer Tutorial Series (Part 1)
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 11. 06. 2020
- A step sequencer has been asked for by producers for Logic Pro for quite some time now and the NEW Logic Pro X 10.5 Step Sequencer has finally been implemented with the new update. Personally my workflow has become so much faster and smoother with the addition of the Step Sequencer and new Drum Machine Designer. In this part one of a two part series, I will go over the different modes inside of the Step Sequencer and how they affect a drum loop that I've made with DMD. I will be doing a general overview and going through some of the backend as well, explaining how certain parameters and modes work to make your drum patterns more interesting.

Thanks Miles! Do you prefer this style over the shorter ones?
@@itstonyholiday I'm fine with either! In this case there was definitely a lot to cover with the new step sequencer update so I think this longer video was fitting. However shorter videos to just cover one specific technique or topic are great too!
Miles Mochizuki thanks for the feedback! Thatâs exactly how I feel. Cheers Miles đ

Dope vid, Tony. Not sure if anyone else has pointed this out or you've found it. But, for the hi hats I've been filling every step then just changing the step rate/16 to /8. Saves a little time in the workflow.
Great tip! Thanks for that Raymon... that saves the whole pattern saving issue. Thank you for watching đ
Greattttttt Video!!!!!
Thank you for watching!
The only thing I hate about Logic rn, that is messing with my workflow, is that 90% of my samples in the built in file browser can't be previewed instantly. Logic seems to struggle with anything above 16bit. Compared to Ableton and FL users, where literally all their samples can be previewed right away so they can find the best drums for their track. Even though I love what they did with the 10.5 update, I'm still having to use Alchemy's sampler sometimes just because it lets me preview all sounds at one click. If Apple gets on top of this, my life would be complete
Ya I feel that... I make most of my samples now from scratch and theyâre in 24bit so I donât have any issues. But could see this being frustrating
report it to logic feedback www.apple.com/feedback/logic-pro.html
There is a free app called XLD, it will automatically convert to which ever you prefer and keep them in the folders. Completely fixed this problem.
@@mehcustom24 I used it... didn't work for me to mass convert. The 24b files all came back distorted and such, would not recommend this program. The only effective way I've found is by doing it 1 by 1 via dragging them into Logic.
@@itstonyholiday Its a lossless converter that runs natively on mac, you must have not checked the options properly. I converted 60,00 samples and haven't found single bug in one since I did 6 months ago. I made sure top create a back up before hand just in case though. Btw, as a soon as you drag those samples into the logic session, the exact same lossless compression is done on them. Thats why you cant preview you them, Logic doesn't pay 24bit samples, it has to convert them when you put them into the project.
I've had a cracked version of logic since they were selling 10.1 on ebay. I'm seriously considering just buying it for this alone. $199 for Logic is an absolute steal now. We should probably grab it before apple raises the price đ
The update had made it the front running DAW imo. Everything about it is just so easy to use and functional, plus with the looks of an Apple product. Canât argue with the price either!
thanks man i mean it
Thanks for watching!
Lol, is it wrong that i was bobbin my head to the pattern he said was super boring?đđđ that shit fiređ„đđŸ

3:43 - Where it says " /16" on the left hand side of the sequence change it to "/8" to fill every 2 steps.
Good shout, someone else mentioned this below as well
ayyy my g
Whatâs good homie?!
New to logic and your videos are terrific. For someone just starting out, is it worth learning to use the piano roll and midi or is focusing on the step sequencer a better use of time? Thanks
Hey, Iâm really happy that youâre finding the content helpful especially as a beginner. My approach would be to learn both for different uses. Step sequencer for drums, but midi for anything melody related. You can do either in both options, but thatâs the method that I use.
Thanks for watching + the kind words đ enjoy producing
Another great video! Did you make part 2 yet?
Thank you! And yes it should be the next video after that one
@@itstonyholiday Hi Tony. I found it on the side. Somehow it didn't show a thumbnail at the end of this part 1. You could add that in CZcams studio because I was referenced to another tut from WLPR and going to miss out on your part 2. Great info there as well. Even though our style is completely different, your info applies to any genre. Good work!
@@soundt1515 Ah interesting. Thanks for letting me know, I'll add it now. Glad you found the content helpful and thank you for watching!
TONY! Is there any way to save your kits in drum machine designer? As of right now it seems like I have reload all my samples / make a new kit for every project... which is weak.
Anyways keep killing it!!! đ„
Hey! Yes there is, think you need to save them as a patch and then access them through the library browser. Use the littler gear icon to save them in the library. Thanks for watching!
thanks for the great videos man! How do you get back to the sequencer after changing it to midi?
Hey! From what I understand you cannot. Once it's changed to midi that's permanent unless you just want to go back and undo "CMD+Z". Thanks for watching, glad you like the vids!
Great knowledge share!! One thing I loved about FL was the any drums I made in the FL DAW always for some reason seemed to bang without doing anything. Before this tools logic had their Drum Synth which just made the drums sounds flat, a total flop. Now seeing Logic has this sequencer giving the same flow on sequencing drums like FL - any idea how to make them just pop, anyone else feel what I'm trying express? Or is it just me đ€
I don't seem to have the issue you're describing. I also have FL and the sound output is the same when I put the same samples in the sequencer. I recommend trying the new DMD, it's a great workflow and has made Logic much easier to use :)
legendd
Appreciate you!!!
@@itstonyholiday could you do a video on studio strings?
Great idea... Iâm not a strings expert by any means but MusicTechHelpGuy does one thatâs really good. I will add it to videos to make tho
This is so helpful thanks for the video :) I have one question, maybe someone can help - if I want to load a melodic instrument (f.e. bass) into he sequencer, by default it gives me only 8 rows (one C-major scale, 8 notes). I know that I can manually add rows and assign them notes one by one but can I also add more than that in one go? With drum kits I have the option "add all" but only for labelled notes and I can't find anything similar for just adding more registers without having to do it one by one for each single note...
Thanks for watching, unfortunately I don't know the answer to your question but will have a look later.
Cheers!
The game has changed.
Yessir, now it's just a matter of changing with it. Thanks for watching!
The only important thing is missing is the possibility to pitch each note on fly, like in FL without any workarounds. Specially for hi hats roll. Great video!
Thank you for watching! Not sure I follow what you mean, you can pitch hi hats by changing the pattern to midi and pitch from there
@@itstonyholiday well, let's say you have created a sequencer pattern with all stuff like kick, snare , hi hats etc. Now you wanna pitch only the hi hats. Yes , you can convert the region to midi but I can't see the option to pitch just hi hats as all notes inside are occupied by other drum Kit elements. Plus once you've converted to midi, you lose the possibility to go back to step sequence pattern in case of.. pls correct me if I'm wrong, maybe I overlooked something? đ€ Thanks in advance!
@@LagunaFruit Yup that's the only way to do it really. You could:
a) take the hi hats out of the DMD sub group and use the note mode in the step sequencer to pitch them within.
OR
b) Do as I said above. I use this method, cause I tend to change my pitch and rolls for hi hats last.
@@itstonyholiday Thanks man!;)
Good luck! Thanks for the shout
Part 2 pls
See my videos, it's out.
Excellent vids. đđŒ. Question: how do u switch the hihat pattern to triplets for just a bar then return to 8ths/16ths (like u were gonna make something like hotline bling)? Just switched to logic from mpc; very much in learn mode. Thanks again âïž
Thank you! Really pleased that you found the content helpful. Note repeat would be your best bet here. Enjoy!
Tony Holiday note repeat wouldnât work in cases where the triplet goes across more than 1 beat. I tried creating another row w the same sound on it and putting that row on 1/8T quantization. Didnt work, as the new row played at a different pace.
phat pat try to use the âtieâ option. Located the same place as noted repeat. That worked for me
Change the rate of the row then
Also, how do you note separate when change it to midi, so you can change volume and make into wavs each drum piece?
Right click, separate by note pitch
Love the videos! Best in the game @itstonyholiday
đ appreciate you homie! Always showing love
The only issue I see in using the whole kit in the combined pattern option is that Iâm not sure how I could change the pitch for some drums like specifically high hats - I could use the option in the sequencer but then adding effects to just kicks or 808âs are out of the question.
You can for sure! You can do it in the sequencer, but imo the best thing to do is convert the sequencer pattern to midi, and then change pitches individually from there.
I think I explain it in this video, but let me know if you have more questions:

Tony, but can I do variations in the pattern while the song develops? Cause if I change the pattern, it changes it from the beginning :(
Yes, you just need to create new pattern regions or convert it to midi.
10K Holiday
Chasssr my homie đ€ not here without you
For the sequencer can you use your own drum kits?Like drag and drop your own sounds?
Definitely! Thatâs one of the best features about it đ
@@itstonyholiday can you explain more on how to do that Iâm a beginner in Logic Pro and producing music itâs really overwhelming and Iâm just watching A lot of research on CZcams
@@azs_3102 czcams.com/video/nwgHsy4dQTQ/video.html
you went really fast converting to midi. i hit the the convert to midi, but i'm not able to switch back n forth so easily like you and it doesn't any longer play in the sequencer. what do yo suggest?
The only way you can switch back is via cmd + z or undo. So if you continue on working on your project you won't be able to convert back.
Sorry to bother you back to back days, but when I save it as a template my drums don't reload. The pattern saves perfectly though any idea how to fix this?
Youâll have to save the drums as a DMD, load that, then the pattern đ
I really wanna pitch my hi hats inside of the drum machine after doing the step sequencer. Do you know if, and how thatâs possible? Thx:)
Youâll need to run the hats separately in its own DMD or Q-Sampler. Then use the note function.
Imo itâs better to just make a 2 step pattern and then send it to midi and do the rolls from there
Tony Holiday thank you so much!
@@LauritsBrandt No worries! Thank you for watching and the kind words đ
Hi Tony! Is similar to Ultrabeat?Still find Ultrabeat cool.?
Hey Horst! Yes itâs similar, however I find the workflow to be better than UB. I still use and love UB for creating drum sounds, but this has taken the place of it for sampling. Thanks for the question đ€
Tony Holiday Thanks for your opinionđ
@@horstlippitsch Thanks for the comment!
hey tony i have another dmd question... so if i get my pattern the way i want in the sequencer, how can i apply subtle (or not so subtle) variations in the drum track (changes in the course of the song) without making entirely new dmd tracks? eg i want to keep my original pattern visible in the sequencer, but add changed for certain measures within the song. please advise thx
I would make the changes in DMD and then convert to midi wherever you want to have the variations đ Thanks for watching
Tony Holiday ok is there a way to do it without midi?
@@gothsurfshorts Copy the DMD pattern?
How do you decide where each instrument will hit in the pattern ?
Not sure what you mean...
@@itstonyholiday how do you determine where to place each instrument in the pattern. How do you decide where the snare will go, how do you decide where the kick and 808 will go. Is there a calculated method or do you just go off ear?
