Sorry, I am an old Floyd fan. I had all of these albums when I was in my teens and they got wiped when my Dad stacked them in a cardboard box and put them out in a shed at his place on a lake. Needless to say moisture and mold destroyed ALL my record collection to include a very nice complete set of Styx including records under the Wooden Nickel label.. I cried... I was deployed to Korea with the Air Force for a year when this happened. BUT... (My opinion) While Animals and Wish You Were Here are great albums. The creation of Dark Side of the Moon was the point where the band left the almost pure psychedelic and ventured closer towards the sound and performance that put them on the map. Rolling Stone and MTV did not create the wave of success Floyd enjoyed after it's release. MTV wasn't even a thing yet. The album is one I grew up with. I listened to it on cassette tape at night my first years in the service, again before MTV was even a thing. Other guys in the service from all over the country KNEW that album and it was a favorite of theirs as well.
I don't read Rolling Stone. I didn't watch MTV very much and I don't recall MTV really pushing Floyd more than say Dire Straights or Duran Duran or any number of more popish bands of the 80s. I was a drummer in a band a long way back and we would get drunk or high or both and talk music with other band members and players and Dark Side was one of the albums we all agreed was one of Floyd's best if not the best. Years later you want to credit Rolling Stone and MTV with success that Floyd earned then that is just the view point of someone NOT from the period in my opinion. The Wall, for me, was a great work but it was also a work of ego. It was according to many articles of the time when Floyd broke up the point where Waters and Gilmore really had a hard time. Waters especially pushed his contribution and demand for credit for his work on that album. Sorry for the book comment but you frivolously giving credit to Dark Side of the Moon to a crap publication like Rolling Stone which ended up spending more time on politics and social issues than music and MTV which started out fairly good but was consumed by crap music and agenda later is worth discussing in depth. It's not your personal favorite album. That's fine and fair. But to discredit and marginalize the impact on rock music that Dark Side had and still has is like saying Sergeant Pepper's of the Beatles and say.. Tommy from the Who were second rate and over hyped by media as well.

One of my favorite bands from the 70's. Although I did not get into their post Waters period I did appreciate Gilmour's solo albums. Seeing them live in 1977 at Boston Garden and 1980's Wall show at Nassau Coliseum spoiled me Lj.
You have a collection here that a lot of Pink collectors would like to have for completion. Good to see you back .

Paneeks1960 I love that Pink Floyd have endured and evolved long enough to have created not only an amazing body of work but a dedicated allegiance of fans that can all pledge loyalty to the albums that were the soundtrack to their most formative years. How many bands can claim that? Never saw them live, sincerely envious and wish the entire P1960 clan the safest, warmest and most awesome New Year's Eve ever. Staying in and fast asleep before the ball gets anywhere near the ground, that's most always the preferred choice here. Rock it on my behalf brother. - Lj

      @Paneeks1960 Před 9 lety

You are right Lj. The albums that PF released so far have surely played a large role in many a fan's life. I will never forget 1975 when my dad came home from work {daily mile and a half walk home from the Quincy Center T stop} and popped a Pink Floyd ticket for the Boston Music Hall on my kitchen table. He then asked me these words that I will never forget: "Are these guys any good"? My eyes lit up and I quickly answered "Yes". I was 14 years old and I was holding a ticket to see the 'Wish You Were Here' tour at the Music Hall. I will never forget the ticket price of $6.50. It was a pink ticket that was specially printed at the Music Hall for all of their shows. I have quite a few of them for artists like Marley, Bruce, Queen, www.mjwilsonphotography.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/07/aerosmith_concert_ticket.jpg , Kinks, Heart, Dead, Bowie, etc...
My dad found the ticket on the ground as he was leaving the train station. It was impossible for me to go alone so I ended up selling the ticket for $12 to a kid on my hockey team. If I had only kept it the ticket would have been an incredible collectible.
Didn't we talk a few years back about watching some of the Twilight Zone Marathon on New Years Eve? I know that we both have shared more than a few New Years in the VC and we PM'd each other quite a few times around this time. Whatever you do before the ball drops I hope that Renee, yourself and the kids have fun doing so.
Thanks again for another great year of videos, the best comment replies on the planet and for your loyal friendship that means more to me than anything else.

Soon enough, another endless summer will be in full swing and you couldn't be more right, Mr. Serling and The Zone are in full swing here. Momentary Lapse of Reason is a great find on vinyl. I never owned that album on vinyl till I joined the VC. Big upgrade from my cassette back in the day. No value there, just all the studio releases so nothing interesting! Honestly, I'm not planning on picking up Endless River at this point unless it turns up used cheap or both. Just doesn't seem like a must have album. Am I dead wrong? We've always been on the same Floyd page, not much use for the Syd era but like Rush or Marillion or even Genesis, Floyd fans are most always divided into very loyal camps! Martin Noreau Uncle Marty! So glad you found the time to catch this and share the memories, really great to hear from ya and I hope all's well! Floyd are amazing in that they've evolved and endured so long that they have legions upon legions of devoted fans and near anyone born since the 50's has had the opportunity to spend some quality formative teenage time with them and develop a relationship with at least one or two releases. Quite simply, there just is no bad Floyd release, just some more favorited amongst groups tan others. The vinyl boom has massacred prices for sure but either more reissues will come or the bubble will eventually burst as do all. Either way, hang tight and they'll soon be back in that collection! Safe and Happy New Year to the Uncle and Aunt, all the best and many thanks for all the support this year! - Lj

The Wall was one I found during a Goodwill dig and is my only PF to date, other than what I have on iTunes. The one I found doesn't have the writing on the cover, so it's an earlier pressing. It's his opinion. He's entitled to it. Plenty of people don't connect with DSOTM as much as they do with, for example, WYWH or Animals or Meddle or The Wall or even the Syd era. Just because a bunch of lists put it as "the best album of all time" doesn't make it so. These things are subjective.

I can't help but remember finding my copies of these albums and paying no more than $5 a piece ($10 or so for a new copy) And to look now on Amazon that you can't acquire a copy of Meddle for less than $50 blows my mind. The boom will taper off, nothing like that lasts forever and prices will again fall as new converts decide its not for them and they head back for the safety of their iPads. The trick is going to be being there at the right time to scoop up the pricey reissues they've offloaded in the process! Thanks for takin' the time to catch this, Happy New Year! - Lj

LJ, you nailed it bro! We have the exact same taste in Pink Floyd. My absolute fav is Animals followed by Momentary Lapse of Reason. I really need to find Delecate Sound on vinyl. That was a great concert-I wore out the VHS I had in the early 90s. I also need to find that Wall "the Film" edition. There were so many tracks that were different variations/re-recordings from the movie that are much different than the actual album. I wish I could score an OG copy of Division Bell for $10 like you did.... :)

ejd715 Hey! I've only once seen The Film in the shops and it was the one I showed. It was only a few bucks at the time too so it was a no-brainer. Thanks to the vinyl boom, anything that says Pink or Floyd on it is instantly tagged forty dollars regardless of condition, its nuts. Glad to hear we're on the same Floyd wavelength, those two albums are just amazing. Happy New Year! - Lj

What a way to finish up my New Years Day LJ video watching onslaught than with a Pink Floyd Collection video! You just knew DarkSideOfTheZoom was going to tune in to this one! I have to agree with you that the first couple of Floyd records don't really do anything for me, I guess I just really like the influence Gilmour has had on that band. I fluked finding a near mint 1975 "Gigi" cover Japanese pressing of Ummagumma last year, I nearly flipped out! I love the semi-"droste" effect that they did with that cover too. "A pretty widespread reaching reach"? Yeah, I know what you meant! DSOTM overrated? Nah! Well, yeah, maybe! DSOTM, Wish You Were Here, Animals and The Wall are the ones for me...and Division Bell slips in the back door. Your original release of Division Bell is sick! This was a nice tribute for The Floyd bro, I enjoyed this one a lot! Thanks! D.

    • @BioCYTE1
      @BioCYTE1  Před 9 lety

DarkSideOfTheZoom The last in line! Hello? Dio? DSOTZ, not overrated (underrated actually) DSOTM, yes, wildly overrated. Its amazing how many folks I've heard claim its their best album but when asked what they thought of The Final Cut, they've never heard it. So exactly how then could it be their best again? The media hype over the years and classic rock radio have just destroyed that album to the point where the opening notes of "Money" have me reaching for the volume knob and down it goes. I just can't do it anymore. I'm with you, Animals, The Wall and a backdoor entry (ew) for The Division Bell. Have not yet grabbed Endless River (have you?) but I'm sure its inevitable! And with that, you've officially spent more time with me in the past 24 hours than I've spent with myself and for that, I offer my apologies sir! - Lj

Very impressive collection LJ! I'm still missing many of their albums on vinyl. My all time favorite Pink Floyd album is Wish You Were Here. The documentary of making the album just came from the TV a while ago and it was brilliant too.
I really love The Wall as well. I have an original (or very very early) US pressing of it, but I'd like to get an upgrade copy. Would you recommend the recent reissue? At least that's still pretty easy to find in NM condition. :D
By the way, I saw the Wall movie as a planetarium show couple of years ago and that really blew my mind. If you ever have a change to see that, make sure not to miss it. It was abso-fucking-lutely amazing! That was an experience that I'll never forget.
I enjoy the Division Bell even though many people seem to dislike it. I have it on cassette and it sounds great. I must grab the reissue, but that costs 34,95 € (about 42.5 USD) at my local record store!
Anyway, I should try to find more Pink Floyd records online. They are almost impossible to find in the wild for a reasonable price around here.
Thanks for sharing your collection LJ! Have a good rest of the year. And even better next year!

TheVinylCorner Wow, someone digs Floyd more than I thought to pen a response like that! Its always been very interesting to me to see how many different groups of Floyd fans there are but a band that has changed as much as they have and has existed as long as they have is naturally going to have a catalog full of favorites and fans that will rabidly defend their favorites. I don't hate any single album, just have some that I like or dislike more than others. Of those three copies of The Wall I have, they all sound the same. The reissue is a nice way to own a brand spanking new copy that no one has ever touched and is dead mint. For that, I'd say go for it, grab a cold beer and get yourself comfortably numb my brother. My favorite Floyd album has to be Wish You Were Here but actually there´s no bad album. I also had my problems with the very early Floyd albums first. Saucerful e.g. is an album you have to grow to. In my case it turned out a fantastic psychy prog-album. Love your Devision Bell 1st press. it gets traded for prices beyond good and bad. I have a higher appreciation for Dark Side,it's my fave just as are The Wall and Wish You Were Here. And maybe i should add A Momentary Lapse also.
I mentioned this on my most recent video, but i heard Animals 30 years ago and i didn't like it.This year i thought i'd give it another chance and it turned out to be one of the best finds of the year. Hey LJ, now we are talking, I'm a huge floyd fan and somewhat of a floyd apologist - i like everything they've done aside from the endless river. I have all those albums + "works" and "more" but minus delicate sound. Its too bad the vinyl boom made their prices ridiculous, but i feel its a bubble that will burst. $30 for used vinyl isn't sustainable. Just like you the wall was my gateway, and am a huge fan of animals w wish you were here my fav. One side note- original press of meddle didn't have the band name or album name on cover. Happy new year, may 2015 bring you more of your vinyl want list!

Bryan Fitts Hi Bryan! I too have no plans on picking up Endless River based on what I've heard of it and about it so far. It's also not a cheap one so until a reasonably priced used copy turns up, I'm comfortable without it. I couldn't agree more about the vinyl boom completely screwing the hell out of anything Floyd. It's good for owners, horrible for buyers, I've seen VG copies of Animals shooting for $50?! Thankfully I've had these all for a long time and didn't pay anything close to that for them. Agreed, the bubble will eventually pop and labels all get back on track! Thanks for tunin' in, Happy New Year! - Lj

I never thought it would be worth so much, those mid to late 90's records go for a pretty penny and it sits next to my copy of NIN The Fragile vinyl copy...

Ness from the city of onett I've never been a big 60's psych fan so it's not really surprising those first two aren't magical for me. Floyd's fantastic though in that they've been around so long and have so many different periods that there's enough Floyd for everyone. Thanks for tunin' in! - Lj

I'm a bit surprised, oh mighty Lj, and that is because you have surprisingly "modest" PF collection. I thought you would have like millions of releases by them! You may (or may not) know that I like PF too. My favourite PF album is "Animals" and I'm not sure why but I just love that album. It may be because the cover art and music "go hand in hand". I've seen that Battersea power station in real life a couple of times and it was an impressive sight - even in daylight!
I think that "Wish You Were Here" is their best album.
I think I agree with you that "Dark Side Of The Moon" is an overrated album but I love to listen to a SACD version of it with multi-channel 5.1 audio mix about once or twice a year. Takes me to "another dimention" if you know what I mean...
I got the vinyl copy of "Pulse". I'm still not sure what got me to buy it in the first place when it was new but I'm glad I bought it... Go figure it out!
I'd say that after all these years Pink Floyd has let me down once. I'm still very very dissapointed that there's still no multi-channel 5.1 mix of "The Wall". Not even the immersion box set of it has it which is a bit weird because "Wish You Were Here" & "Dark Side Of The Moon" immersion box sets have multi-channel mixes of the album. Well maybe that's just me...
Side three of "The Wall" is probably their finest moment,

MyVinylBar I honestly had no idea you were such the Floyd scholar Professor Jarkko! You've shown them omore than once, this much I know, but, man, you really know your Floyd! And so, you also agree that Gilmour's voice is once of the most soulful, soothing instruments ever created. As he takes the verse from Waters on Comfortably Numb, I get goosebumps every time. Its as close to an out of body experience as you can get. It's so apparent on The Wall Live in Berlin lp when Van Morrison takes over, it just fails. Pulse on vinyl and the Power Station up close and in person?! Jarkko, you dog! - Lj

I think Dave Gilmore's issue with Atom heart is the issue of a Re-Issue thus Re-issuing the original issue of Dave Gilmore's issue, I'm speculating of course.
The Wall: It's a great album but when I (and I have) become one with the content especially the lyrical content, it is the most depressing and dark album I have ever heard. Old mate Bob G is great in the movie.

I really enjoyed your video, bro! I grew up with Pink Floyd, they are the ones that saved me from all the crappy mexican music in the 80's. Man, I have every single album of them, and I love all of their eras, I even love the psychedelic Barret era. My favourite is also The Wall but sometimes I prefer Wish You Were Here. I didn't see The Wall movie until 1995 but it really blew me away an it reaffirmed my preference for The Wall as best album. I have a quadraphonic edition of Atom Heart Mother, but the sound is a little odd, nevertheless I love it too, I'll make a transfer of it one of these days and upload it so you can listen to it. I also have a German edition on red vinyl of Animals, I think I did a video of it.
One of my Christmas gifts was The Division Bell reissue on 2 LP's and you should really listen to it, its a huge improvement over the original single LP, I'm gonna make a video of it tomorrow so stay tuned for it.
As always great video man, keep them coming. I've been wanting to ask you to make a video showing your David Bowie collection, if you haven't done one yet. Take care, man, and have a great new year. - IQ

Israel Quezada Bowie's a great idea for a collection video! I'll definitely film one next year (ha!). I have to completely agree that there's no bad period or album for Pink Floyd, just different periods and fans are normally divided between them. It's awesome, and probably quite rare, that someone truly loves all of it like you do. They've changed quite a bit and put out some really different albums. Like Rush for both of us, it's great to have a band that you just love everything they've ever recorded. Congrats on The Division Bell score, that's awesome! I've not heard it yet but it would have to be pretty convincing to get me to pick one up since it's not a cheap album and I have the original. I do remember the red vinyl edition of Animals, still jealous of that one! Thanks for takin' the time to catch this and leave your thoughts, Happy New Year brother! - Lj

Incredible collection!!! I wish I had more Pink Floyd. At the moment all I have by them is The Wall. I believe it's a first press, dad passed it on to me as I sold my other copy which was possibly a later copy and certainly not in the same condition as my dads. Funny that you mention DSOTM as being a bit overrated. That album is my curse album. Whenever I find it, it's trashed, has no record inside and/or is missing half the cover due to splits and such. If you dont like yours, I certainly would! Hahaha, I agree with Animals, a MUCH better album and probably a bit more creative to my ears. Good seeing ya LJ! Keep on rocking! Dave

LetThereBeVinyl Thanks Dave! Glad you dug this! I know you're newer to collecting and sadly, the vinyl boom has caused every shop owner in every country to price every Floyd album regardless of condition at somewhere near a zillion dollars (before tax).
