Found this channel from watching ebike builds. I'm now hooked and lost my entire Saturday! đ It really is a joy to listen to a true craftsman!
I have a 4â, 6â and 8â record heat sink myself đ all made in England.
Here in the colony's we call them Vixen files, primarily used them on aluminum but autobody shops also use them on Bondo body fillers. Very much like your motorcycle and bike building.
In the UK they are refered to as Rasps as far as I know or at least what my metalwork and woodwork teachers called them.
The weather had me inside almost all day and I watched a bunch of your videos. I really enjoy your content. Thank you

You made a beautiful tool! In the belt sander video, though, I was thinking that some kind of hoop on the mike stand would make mounting the torch less finicky...

Thanks Jason! Yes, my shop is constantly in a state of evolution as I move from one project to another. Always working on the "flow" if you understand that term. Mitch and I are certainly having some fun making these videos. Should be able to keep it up for a while :)
Such an elegant process strategy! Me being a CNC guy, I attack things very differently. And, I would wager, it would actually take me longer to make that one-off clamp in a CNC than it took you manually. A lot of us CNC guys stand to learn a whole bunch from you crafty manual guys! You could have titled this video "Challenge Accepted!" LOL. That is one fine tool accessory!

Love the tip about flipping the drill press vise upside down to align the workpiece - been cutting metal for 40+ years and always happy to learn something new.

What the heck, Paul Brodie has a CZcams channel. As a 15 year old, middle of the 90s, steelframes from brodie, Chance, Frank the Welder, etc. were part of my dreams and gives me goosebumbs. But unfortunately, never can afford one in these times. Then in the 2000s, the market flooded with unemotional bikes and many of the good old brands died unfortunately. Now I ride Carbon bikes which works perfect, but the feeling will never be the same like from the beginnings on steel frames and rigid forks. We all were pioneers.

Those coarse-toothed files are still used in aerospace. They call them vixen files. They work great for filing flat, straight edges on aluminum sheet metal panels.
My Father was an aircraft inspector in England, and that's where some of my files came from. It you treat them well, they can last for decades!
Nice work. I have a J28 too. I used it for about 35 years till I bought a Meco Midget. The Meco is now my favorite torch. I weld mostly 4130 fuselages and other weldments for aircraft.

In one of your videos I saw a brief view of your TIG torch holder. Could you show a little more of that. I'm just starting to learn TIG welding and want to make my own torch holder. From the glimpse I got yours looked like it may be a good salutation.
I made something like that years ago. Clamped the O2 and acetylene tubes, and has a sharpened point leading to the work. It was for cutting circles. A protractor for the torch.

Dreadnought files have curved teeth and millenicut files are the same style with straight teeth. Both self clean very well and work particularly good with aluminium.
They seem to work well with aluminum too.
They like baby powder, WD-40, and a bunch of other things to assist in self cleaning.
Many don't have a tang but do come with an offset hole at each end to mount them in a holder.
They also work well with lead body filler, Gene Winfield might have a few.

I love your channel, your engineering is amazing, just watching your filing technique though and wondered if you have ever tried filing curves using a counter radious technique? I'm 67 now but still feel my Welsh metalwork teacher looking over my 12 year old shoulder instructing me to roll the file in the oposite arc to the curve. This was to prevent flat spots I think but I do it to this day

Just found your channel I love it I used to make jewellery I made a casting machine out of a bicycle rim I made a kilm I and imade a vibrating table to vibrate my molds from an old drill with a hockey puck attached off center funny but did the job when combined with a sm.table on springs. Ireally enjoy watching your Channel makes my stuff look archaic I never had a welder I did some brazing and I really enjoy watching what you're doing it's almost as satisfying as doing it myself I'm getting a little old now but you take car

Yes, there are different ways of looking at things. I am very careful around the blade, but I figure that if I did slip, the blade would have to cut through the glove first before it could attack my finger. Thanks for watching!

Ahhh, such a great video...as always! I have a question, could you have silver soldered instead of using the tig or is there a benifit Iâm missing?
Stainless is not always easy to silver solder, and silver solder really works best where two surfaces come together with a certain amount of area involved, so the heat from the torch can pull the silver in through what is known as capillary action. So, I would not use silver solder for this job.
Can u plez make a video on how to accurately fashion disc brake mounts for rear disc brakes. Steal frame.
A lot of dropouts now come with ISO disc brake mounts, so frame builders don't go to the trouble of making their own. Also, frame jig manufacturers, such as Cobra, also make fixtures for mounting other kinds of mounts. Check out what they have. I don't know when we will get back to bicycle content, sorry.

I do build wheels, not many, so I have limited experience. So, hard to answer your question. I have a Park truing stand for bicycle wheels, and a very simple shop-made stand for motorcycle wheels. I have no comparison with anything else. Do viewers really want to watch me lace and true a wheel? Thanks for watching :)

It's a 5" Record Vise, pretty common in Canada. I think they were sold by Thomas Skinner.
In Canada where do your source most of your materials? McMaster-Carr has it all but I have trouble buying small amounts of material from them.
Did I hear you mention Sabre Industrial at one point?
McMaster-Carr was selling to me until they found out I lived in Canada. Then they refused. I use Sabre Industrial, Technicut for tooling, and Wajax for seals and bearings.

Now I know this is a very old vid, but I thought I'd offer a hint.. Should anyone working in alu want some of those files you mention, they're wood working files. Theyre also called Carving files.. Iwasaki make some incredible ones ;)

If you weld a washer on the stainless steel round stock where it protrudes from your clamp you might consider adding a folding feature to your hanger one day.
Great conversation pieces are always worth the effort.

Your clamp hanger torch thingy hangs way above a mere conversation piece.
Like that guy with Feynman diagrams all over their family van would say: it's the idea that gets me excited, exploring the possibilities. I used to drive my parents nuts... until my teacher had a flat.
