And another comment, a trick to fit these difficult Teflon rings is with the outer plastic wrap of a pack of cigarettes, you wrap the plastic on the threaded portion and the ring isn't damaged.

Excellent video. I also have an 87 5KCSTQ and need to rebuild the rack. I installed a rebuilt unit years ago and it started leaking within 6 months. Like with everything, it's best to rebuild yourself. I should have known better. This video helps a lot. Love the whole series on this car. Thank you!

The 1997 a6 rack I just tore apart has that Teflon seal on it if that helps identify which models actually use it.
Nice job on the rebuild. I have a rebuild kit for my 91 Coupe Quattro...just hoping I won't need to use it for a while.

Once you know the steps, and once it's out of the car, I'd put it at 4 out of 10 difficulty.

They're hard to find. This one was an original, NOS Audi one I found on eBay. There may be some aftermarket ones available for your car but you'll first need to find the OEM part number.
Great job! Do you know where I can get the factory service manual with all the torques and parts diagram ( steering gear assembly 48.6 and steering rack/housing 48.7)? I'm looking forward to your response.
You can find original Audi factory service manuals on eBay for reasonable prices. Just make sure to get the mechanical systems one, not the electrical one. Just search "Audi 5000 factory service manual" and locate one that covers your year.
Will it mater if you don't bench bleed the system? Or will it burp it self when its plumbed up to the hydraulic system?
It will self bleed when the car is turned on and you turn the wheel from lock to lock a few times.
