  • The Wilcox crew was called out on Easter to recover a rolled over car hauler in our hometown Circle K gas station lot. The rental truck's hitch broke, causing the trailer load of cars to topple and crush the bed of the truck, as well as totaling the cars. One car was even launched into a light pole! Watch as we bring the right equipment to quickly clean up the accident.

    I am by no means a car hauling expert but I do have a 40 foot three car hauler that I use to haul my camper, trailer and my 4 x 4. Mine specifically states not to put a car up front above the hitch unless the rest of the trailer is loaded. if this is the cost for that it is 100% driver error. From my understanding the weight of the cars over the axles and low on the trailer, Keep the trailer from Swaying causing fatigue.

    • @WilcoxGarageRecovery
      @WilcoxGarageRecovery  Před rokem +3

      That certainly would make sense! He had just delivered 2 cars about 25 minutes north of here, and his truck was at the dealer getting worked on. Since this was an Enterprise rental he was using to pull his trailer, maybe it was fully loaded at start, and the hitch couldn't take any more after he dropped them off

      @jeffsmith8449 Před 2 měsíci

      @WilcoxGarageRecovery I plan on hauling cars using a Curtis 5th wheel, but I bought a hitch that would do 32K that hitch is rated for 21K if he has been hauling 4 cars say SUV's he is already exceeded the weight limit. Lucky guy if that broke loose on the interstate, he would be looking at prison time for wrongful death. for violations. I would say he just placed himself out of business he destroyed that Truck and maybe damaged his trailer.

    placing both cars on the top deck creates a lot of stress on the hitching components in a set up like that. I would have placed the front car on the lower deck, placing the rear car where it was... that would have lowered the center of gravity and greatly reduced the stress on that hitch setup.

      Agreed. Open frame trailer like that has little torsional rigidity. In this setup having a load on the top puts a large moment load on the hitch during cornering due to the centrifugal forces created. You have to drive very gingerly on corners.

    Couldn’t help but notice, that the only two cars on that trailer ,
    were both riding the upper deck.
    How much stress is that hitch expected to handle, with no lower vehicle weight ,
    to help anchor the trailer’s wheels to the pavement.
    Besides that, the driver could get a false sense of security, with a trailer appearing empty, when looking into the mirrors.
    Driver is really lucky it all happened in a parking lot,
    and not on a highway turn.

That stops the years in court, a lot more costly than the two cars! Private property, no accident report on file, no insurance claim so no huge increase, if he could even get insurance!

    Must take a “Special” kind of talent to do that much damage in a PARKING LOT! It’s miracle of nature to pack that much stupid into one skull! And I doubt the hitch broke before he rolled the trailer - otherwise the trailer tongue would have slid off the bed and landed flat!

      Looking at it again, he was going the wrong way from the arrows on the pavement. And, can anyone explain the distance from the tire tracks on the pavement and where the trailer ended up? I can't.

    • @WilcoxGarageRecovery
      @WilcoxGarageRecovery  Před rokem +1

      The only thing we noticed about the hitch is that it was not a normal 5th wheel...it was some kind of gooseneck to 5th wheel adapter hitch, as the truck was an Enterprise truck (the driver had just rented it because his 2022 Dodge was at the dealer getting worked on). So, not sure if that adapter style hitch came with the truck rental or not, but guessing it was not secured properly because it shouldn't have been able to swivel on the goose ball and the 5th wheel plate at the same time. Nevertheless, it was a very long skid mark...

The rear vehicle that was into the light pole ripped all 4 tie down straps clean through the heavy steel mesh floor of the trailer.

      The skid marks happen when the trailer detaches from the truck, there's a wire that pulls a pin and emergency brakes on the trailer activate, the trailer broke off, pin detached, brakes locked on trailer but truck was still moving and that's how it ended there. There's nothing much to it but just analyzing the situation, skid marks doesn't necessarily means it was going too fast. I own a trailer just like that one and do something similar for a living.

    Ive been in that situation in the middle of the mountains in Colorado during a snow storm. My team driver was behind the wheel. Because he was upset at the boss he took his frustration out on the gas pedal while he thought he was going over the curb he was actually trying to climb a big ass rock. It wasnt a tri 5 but a 48' wedge hauler

  • @beerandgasolinemagazine5581

    @riosautotransportllc uses these same trailers. I'd love to get their thoughts as to what might have happened. I tried to find the owners manual for a Kaufman EZ 4 but all I could find was some generic loading info for their single deck wedge trailer which said to load the trailer evenly and to never put a single vehicle all the way to the front. It also said to go slow through turns and uneven ground to avoid a rollover. What happened is unfortunate and obviously more so for the driver, but it's also an opportunity to learn something. Nice job cleaning up the mess safely. Nobody was hurt and at the end of the day that's what matters.

    A used single drive axle semi makes so much more sense for these car hauling setups. May not look as cool but able to do a ten hour break in the sleeper. The trucks actually made to run high mileage and probably even get better MPG. Upfront cost on that pickup is over 6 figure now days, makes no sense to me.

    • @Thisoldhiker
      @Thisoldhiker Před rokem +3

      Saw two similar rigs each hauling a 40 foot ocean shipping container on a low flatbed west from Norfolk, VA this week. I had the same thought that a semi would have been a better tool for the job.

    • @WilcoxGarageRecovery
      @WilcoxGarageRecovery  Před rokem +4

      You definitely aren't wrong! Even a medium duty truck like the new Kenworth T380 or T480 would make a lot more sense pulling one of these trailers, and fuel mileage would probably be at least 7-8mpg fully loaded.

    Looks like the VW was on top too? Or was it in the back part of the trailer? In that case, he might have assumed they would cancel each other out? The car hauler was definitely speeding though, look at the gauges in the asphalt/concrete...
