As a Black American from Texas, I was told that Juneteenth came about b/c the Emancipation Proclamation had been ratified in December 6 1865 but the slaves in Texas were not notified until June 19th 1867 b/c that is when Texas surrendered to the Union Army. General Gordon Granger lead the Union Army to Galveston, Texas to make the announcement.
The emancipation proclamation was on January 1st 1863. The ratification was the thirteenth amendment on December 6th 1865. The Texas slaves only missed being told about Congress part of the process in early 1865. It's make believe holiday to separate the races instead of celebrating the Emancipation Proclamation or the thirteenth amendment.

My favorites were when they showed how great Black people were during reconstruction, and how blacks were foundational to the Republican Party, because of the freedom it espoused.
