Film is under-rated. Great film about how expectations hold people back. People often forget Jude Law's character who is destroyed by the expectations that he must be great and exceed hence his suicide attempt (eventual success) and alcoholism. While Ethan Hawke is expected to have no dreams or aspirations as he isnt as physically blessed due to his natural birth.
+Lewis C Good point, going to use it in my presentation about the movie. Thanks.
this is a very good movie and it has to be in the top 100 movies made by Hollywood. The manner in which it presents its theme of a society where success is everything and superiority becomes dominance is just incredible. With a very interesting story and a plot full of suspense and twists there is no parallel of this movie. It was probably way ahead of its times. And that is why it neither won rewards or awards. Had it been made today it would have smashed records and won numerous awards. But its a great movie and will never age.
I really love this film. It's an underrated masterpiece.
My personal favorite film of all time. It has affected my life beyond measure, and made me want to study film (and work towards becoming a worthwile filmmaker). It has gorgeous cinematography and set design, fantastic performances, top notch screen writing, and a heart not captured by most films ever released. It's as earnest as it is expertly made. A truly wonderful film. Thank god so many high schools show it in biology, as they did in mine. It may not be a commonly refererred to movie by film academics, but I'm happy to see so many kids get the chance to experience it. Even my best friend's fiance, who is not a big film person, remembers and loves it.
I saw this film in secondary school during our biology class when we were talking about genetics and the ethics and discussions concerning it. It was really good and a good way of getting people to see it and discuss one of the current issues in our society.
"You want to know how I did it? This is how I did it, Anthon. I've never saved anything for the swim back."
A great and under-appreciated movie, thought provoking, beautiful music, beautiful actors.
Amazing soundtrack
This review was posted on CZcams 10 years ago and I'm just watching it now? How is that possible?
This masterpiece of style, plot, soundtrack, theme/message got a grand total of ONE Oscar nomination. Most normal people would rather watch a movie like this 10 times over the "artistic" crap the Acadeeemy rewards. And yes, Im here because PARASITE was terrible.
One of the best sci-fi films out there.
If you're reading this and you haven't watched this full video (and haven't seen the movie), STOP! Go rent or buy this movie immediately. Scott kind of ruins the emotional punch of the movie's ending in this review. It's a great movie to be inspired by, watch it as it was intended, not in little clips on yt.
Go rent this movie? That's funny. I bet you didn't see that coming. No more movie rental stores.
I'm glad this film is getting the recognition it deserves.
I am not the kind of person that throws the label "underrated" to anything that I like and most people ignore, but for this film that label is well deserved.
...you can't put the second swim in your review, it's the most important scene in the movie! seriously dude?
bobomber but they did...
Poorly written comment. What, exactly, are you trying to communicate?
@@ThePopbanks007 The point is you don't have to spoil a movie in order to review it. Do I really have to explain that?
@@bobomber I understand that, which is why I said it was poorly written. Look again at the sentence structure.
@@bobomber especially since this movie is almost 25 years old
I love this film! I tell all my friends to watch it as so underrated. The music ALWAYS gets me very emotional. Like Ennio Morricone + Sergio Leone!
It makes me so sad how so many people don’t know this exist.
Among other things, I like how Andrew manages to show both sides of the debate and neither at the same time. I knew when I first saw it that it was ahead of its time
I loved this movie...just recently watched it again on Hulu after my DVD broke.
EXCELLENT movie...just beautiful to watch, great story, great actors....
One of my favorite movie of all time, top 3
More Critics' Picks, great series!
Gattaca is both Sci Fi and poetry.
Nice that this is in the picks!!. The cinematography is quite brilliant.
Absolute masterpiece
When the movie came out it was science fiction.
Fifteen years later it is so close to science fact it is scary!
"Discrimination down to a science"
masterpiece
I love how they're swimming across a giant hot tub
beautifully poetic
Class film!
I just re-watched this because of the human genetic manipulation going on in China. I loved it even more the 2nd time around.
Great movie!
Definitely in my top 3 science fiction films:
1. Gattaca
2. Contact
3. Jurassic Park
All based on genetics 🧬
Can someone give me notes to the song morrow piano
this movie changed my life
I hate how I didn't find out about this movie until earlier this year. I'd have loved to see it when it was new.
@Dondellion Haha, you actually think that's a put down. Hope you enjoyed Transformers: Revenge of the zzzzzz
@GeneralGeneric Exactly
@cdavaz What is it about then?
Classic movie.
This can not be made today
This reminds me of Rudy but more sophisticated.

The move isn't all that bad, but I found the romance to be forced and unrealistic. Their entire relationship was based on lies.
Er, Spoiler alert dude. This scene is a huge plot point.
Watch the unforgettable movie, NOT the review. Review has a big spoiler.

Human society discrimination is everywhere. Sexual preference is the most obvious form of discrimination which is normalized and deemed necessary.
This need be watch every sjw in the world
am i the only person in the world who thinks the acting is like mediocre at best?? i thought the dialogue was super awkward and non-expressive and it made it really hard to sympathize with the main characters. i would understand the attempt to make the "opposition" feel cold and unforgiving, but its really baffling that the main characters also speak and act in that exact same style. its hard to feel connected to the main characters because they feel so emotionless. i think the actors did the best they could with the given script, but most of the dialouge just felt so weirdly cryptic and unnatural. the character development, as a result, felt extremely forced and flat.
im willing to be told that its just a style thing and i just dont get it, but im curious if anyones agrees/disagrees for any particular reason. not sayin this isnt an interesting and brilliantly thought out story/idea, i just found some major flaws with the dialogue and character building. i love the story- it presents a very well crafted world with big questions about life and humanity that are dealt with wonderfully. i guess i just found it kinda hard to enjoy with the odd presentation...?
toasty no. Just you lol
Sorry, it's amazing :)
toasty i can’t fathom how you were not able to sympathise with Vincent and even more so with real Jerome. The non-expressive behaviour of their acting is a deliberate characteristic of the movie so we can appreciate the beauty of cinematography and the beautiful background music which elevates every scene into a classic . Also it denotes that since the fate of every individual is already is sealed they are expected to act in accordance to that genetic presumptions rather than showing emotions and expectations which a naturally born man like Vincent would . This is an almost universally loved movie which has become a cult classic and deservedly so .
No, I think it's suitable for the film style. The characters all seem a little cold and not leading emotionally fulfilling lives, because their lives are dictated according to how they were born. That's not much to get joy out of.
You are special lol.
