  • In a March 2010 interview with Ryan Minic of Ryan’s Rock Show, Andy Khachaturian, former drummer of System of a Down and vocalist of The Apex Theory, reflects on his musical journey. Khachaturian reminisces about his time with System of a Down from 1993 to 1997, highlighting the fun and carefree attitude of those early years, filled with weed consumption and the joy of playing music.
He discusses a significant turning point when an injury prevented him from playing drums just before a pivotal showcase for Rick Rubin. John Dolmayan stepped in, and the band continued to progress without him, leading Khachaturian to shift his focus to singing and forming The Apex Theory.
He describes forming The Apex Theory with friends Art and Dave, eventually finding drummer Sammy, and quickly gaining traction, getting signed to DreamWorks within a year of their first show in 1999.
Khachaturian talks about the challenges of the music industry, including label pressures and losing their A&R representative, which contributed to the band’s split. Despite these difficulties, he fondly remembers the camaraderie and memorable moments, such as their time on the Snowcore tour with Glassjaw and Alien Ant Farm.
At the time of the interview, Khachaturian was pursuing various musical projects, including solo work and production. He emphasizes the importance of staying true to his artistic passions and doing what feels right, rather than conforming to industry expectations.
