14:35 i am dan’s son. just to clarify: the car did not go into a pool it crashed into a tree and a fence. those neighbors had a pool but it was probably 10 feet away from the fence. also i stabbed the air conditioning unit multiple times before i hit the tube that sprayed fluid, which makes it funnier. and yes it’s ok to laugh because i probably laughed harder than anyone
I beg of you to do the podcast with them for an episode to describe this on air. That would be the dopest of things
Seconded: I would love to see you on there! Also as a connoisseur of the podcast I believe I can say with some certainty Dan’s never told this story on intentionally blank before

Understandable. I once stabbed about a dozen holes in the drywall of the utility room. It's a miracle I didn't hit an electrical line.
I also once set a creek on fire. Yes, a creek full of flowing water had about a 50 yard long stream of fire going down it. In my defense, it was only partially my fault.

It was an honor to hear Brandon diss my hometown Barnes and Noble. Honestly one of the highlights of the con for me.
What was the food heist?
@@Creameggs42 It was a pie heist and a medical equipment heist. But the big heist worth millions of dollars was only uncovered because the thief also stole a pie.
I first met Brandon at a signing at the Orem UT Barnes & Noble when Mistborn 1 was newly released. I had already read Elantris and loved it, and went there specifically to meet him and get his new book signed. He was sitting there at a small table, not another soul around, maybe 5 copies of Mistborn 1 on the table ready to sign, and he was already a couple of sentences into his sales pitch to me when I informed him that I was actually there to see him and get his new book signed. I remember he seemed delighted (and maybe even slightly surprised) that someone actually came to see him there. Since then, I've been to many more signings by him over the years and watched it grow to its current frenzy. My, how times have changed!
going to the con this year was surreal. from a guy on a writing podcast with a couple fantasy pubs to making epic entrances in front of thousands of people.
For those confused with Brandon why people cheered @36:49. It was because of a Prank Dan set up with the audience before Brandon got there to cheer anytime he said "Have to have"

She walked up a set of stairs behind them. Even sitting in the audience watching it happen, it was pretty funny.
At 6:10 I was able to fist bump Scar as he walked by, perfect timing! No joke, one of the highlights of the con for me. Bridge Four!
This conversation has totally changed my thinking about book signings. I am a huge fan of authors but I'm not a social person. I have never gotten a book signed because I always thought authors must hate the 5 seconds of hundreds of people saying the same things a million times while they sign their names until their hands cramp, so I would never impose myself on them. But now I know they like it! I'm going to start going to book signings now instead of just buying SFEs on Ebay. I'll probably save money, too!
I first met him at the Provo Mall Waldenbooks when I was 17 when he was signing Elantris copies. I was the only person talking to him and got his book because I wanted to support him. I didn't expect much out of the book. Boy was I wrong.
Man... I have such regrets over the first time I met Brandon Sanderson at convention were he was selling and signing his books. I was poor college student who had spent a good chunk of their emergency funds attending a local SciFi convention named conduit. I came across his table in like a corner I think and he tried pitching Elantris to me as fantasy zombies and I straight up was like "I am not sure its for me but Ill think about it and might swing back later..." I never went back to the table like that whole con. Then like years later Fantasy Con happened in SLC and once again I wander by his table but this time I picked up like a sampler book with a few chapters of way of kings and a few chapters of mistborn and I STILL didnt end up reading his books until years later. Now I am hooked... have the leatherbounds, have the mistborn sweater, and drink tea from my dress cup and regret passing by the opportunities I had to become a fan earlier and get lots of signatures.
I was present for this recording and when they asked if there were any booksellers in the audience, I didn’t catch what he said until the moment passed. I missed my chance to yell and be on the podcast 😂

Can’t wait to someday meet these two gentlemen and thank them for all that they’ve taught me about writing.

I was at Dragonsteel 2023, but I deliberately avoided this recording session because if I was there, what would I listen to on my drive home today?
I like Dan's hat
I was at that signing Dan pegged as the worst signing. It was Orange County, so halfway between LA and San Diego. After about 3/4 hours and my wife getting increasingly upset some one from the store came to put our names in the book and was shocked I didn’t have divergent, took pitty and let me go to the front and have Dan sign all thee of my books.
Also got to see Brandon on that driving tour with Dave Wolverton, about 8 people showed up.
That is a terrible thing to force on people. Waiting hours to do something that would take a few minutes had the lines been split.
OMG. I've been watching these from the start and this is the first time I've seen Dan's shiny, shiny pate. #Oneofus.
I'm from Spain. I remember when the name of the wind came out, I was in high school. Everyone was talking about it, it was EVERYWHERE. It felt like everyone was reading it
When I published my book I didn't do any signings. My first signing was more of a sales event at a brewery. I sold 5 signed books. I'll take it.

Brandon and Dan, I relate very much to your wives not wanting to spend money. I grew up in a town of roughly two hundred people in rural Utah in a house that my great-grandfather's cousin built. I was the 4th generation in my family to live in that house, 5th generation in that town (I think, possibly 6th though). My father often had a second job to help support his first job (the ranch), and we were often struggling enough for money that my dad wouldn't even let us drink milk. New games and toys were only given on birthdays and Christmas, unless we specifically did work towards getting something else. All of this, and I still have a hard time getting my wife to let me spend money on anything, including on her! 😂
I was lucky enough to meet Brandon in 2012 at a con in Chattanooga. I'm so glad I got to experience that. Just walked right up to the table, no line, and unloaded a backpack full of monstrous tomes. He signed Alcatraz for my little boy and was totally sweet to him. That little boy is almost 21 now. 🫠
I got my first copy of Elantris from Brandon in Provo. Had a good talk about the writing process at the time. Fun times.
Oh no, not Sacramento! It would be great to have you out here again for a signing. I’ll hope for going to Dragonsteel next year.

I remember a signing by Brandon in Philadelphia, about 2015 or so, that was really bad. It was a really small children's bookstore that was _far_ too small to hold the crowds Brandon was drawing at that point, and it was cold outside. And also, Brandon had been sick and his voice wasn't up to par for his presentation. It was a really bad night!

That was hilarious. There was also a lady that brought them water, I believe a little after this video ends, and it looked like she had been under the table the whole time. Turns out the stairs to the stage were directly behind them.

@@myrojyn I'm not gonna tell you. I think it should remain an inside joke for the people who went to dragonsteel.
Brandon actually said it twice, but for some reason the audience didn't catch the first one. I was sitting there waiting to scream along, and then nobody did. At least we got to go crazy the second time.
@@myrojyn Because Brandon was late, Dan told the audience we should cheer whenever Brandon said "hafting to." So we did. The best bit was Dan not explaining the cheer to Brandon who had no idea what was going on.
I'm so sad that Dan's pre-podcast entertainment was cut
