I've replayed this many times since I found it 2 days ago... it's better then almost any anime or video game I've seen/played to a point where even on a replay, the sheer scale of the attacks, and the little details, I can't help but be mesmerized by how well done it is, this is simply better then what most triple A companys can do with a whole staff, thank you for making something this beautiful.
Yep, we all went back here after seeing part 2. And part 1 is as gorgeous as we remember it. Here's to more years of beautiful Touhou.

I love the non-euclidean nature of some of Reimu’s attacks. It just gives off that latent power vibe, never fully realised as Reimu hasn’t found the need nor care to master it.
That's pretty much who reimu is right? The embodiment of natural talent and latent power contrasting with marisa's hard work, dedication and use of tools to catch up.

I just realized something. At the end, Marisa and Reimu are both saved by their teammate's bombs after their last move. In the game, this actually can happen. If you bomb an instant after getting hit, your teammate uses theirs to save you.
In other words, by spell card rules, Reimu and Marisa pulled a double-kill on each other! Again, only just noticed this detail, and I think it's so cool that was put into the animation!

今までとは異なって自機組同士の戦いだったけど違和感を感じないどころかめっちゃ綺麗にかっこよく弾幕ごっこしていて感動した！そしてあの終わり方、、、次回も神作になる予感、、、

これみて原作見直したらガチで再現度高いことを実感した。

I really appreciate the perspective here. Highlighting Marisa's responses through the fight really makes me root for her. She puts the most work into this fight, and I feel that is reflective of how her character is played in the games. As much as I love Reimu, she is the easiest to play and kinda expected to win lore-wise. The work Marisa puts into defeating Reimu's homing danmaku, and cornering Reimu near the end of the fight with earthlight rays(?) is a lot more technical than Reimu's mostly auto-homing style attacks she chooses to use here. Think this reflects the technical difficulty at least I feel when play as Marisa as opposed to Reimu.
Also appreciate the glimpses we have of the youkai. Love that Alice's immediate reaction to seeing Yukari is to throw down, and Yukari's response is just 'hi!' Think these two used this opportunity to study the humans' fighting style for future fights.
As an aside, I am using this video to demonstrate visual storytelling to my students. Hope to pass the Touhou torch on to future generations.

Oh also I think from what I have gleaned from the games, that was more Alice and Marisa are friends and Yukari was trying to use Reimu for something with the Imperishable night incident. Or something like lol she be shady.
Hi Kevin, I think your take on the storytelling with the visuals and the play style vs Reimu and Marisa's efforts are really well said. Please have a look at this sound effect version of the video. I was rooting for Reimu, she also showed what she was made of.
Marisa puts a lot of work into everything in canon. Reimu's "Ability to Float" lets her just effortlessly float through life. She doesn't need to try (in fact, TRYING is outright harmful to her since it yanks her out of the Fantasy Nature mindset).
Marisa meanwhile possesses one of the *weakest* Abilities in Touhou (the Ability to Wield Magic), and manages to walk in stride with Reimu as one of the mightiest characters, not through a bullshit broken power but through sheer hard work and determination. The Grimoire of Marisa revealed that she studies every spell card of every opponent she and Reimu have ever faced, always appropriating new tricks for her own use, and looking for weaknesses in otherwise broken cards. She's a lovable little kleptomaniac, but she's also earnestly determined to be the strongest **HUMAN** around. And is damn well succeeding at that.

at 5:00 When Reimu took that hit, she dropped her Gohei as the next scene when she appears she was no longer carrying it. Going through frame by frame in that sequence, there was a single frame where you see the Gohei fly towards the screen at 5:02 ...
Also like to mention the shape of Marisa's broom, it's designed to be a flying apparatus, not a cleaning instrument.
And notice that Reimu's does that "T" pose when casting spell cards as the pose in this context is a sign of religious divinity, a miko of the Hakurei Shrine.
OH WOW!! Never noticed that the Gohei flew towards the screen! I knew that Reimu got hit and lost her Gohei afterwards (because sacrifices must be made to survive) but man that was great spotting their! Never would have seen the gohei fly towards the screen.

God, this is just... gorgeous. The re-interpretations of spell cards in 3D space are amazing alongside re-imagining spell card duels as super high-intensity dogfights. I also enjoy the detail that none of the surroundings were damaged, because the spell card rule system prevents damaging the environment.
MinusT’s work is always a lovely highlight of the Touhou community, I can’t believe how lovely this looks! It’s so awesome seeing the improvements between each video, and they’re all absolutely incredible!!!

They did kinda test the idea out with Sanae in Brambly Boundaries but it was more a last resort on her part than swapping in an out like here, it does make me excited for Sanae and Aya to show up, of course Cirno is on the table as well now. It'd be quite fun to see a Cirno vs. the Fairies of Light video.
Even from the start MinusT tries to incorporate extra flavor in the fights with bosses who have fighting game appearances with moves from said fighting games, it just makes the videos that much more amazing. (Yes this is basically shilling for Mokou hopefully, since we are in IN right now, I so want to see her use the claw attack from the fighters to clear out bullets.)

It's crazy to think how his modelling and animating skill has improved drastically, i still remember watching the Reimu vs Remilia vid. It wasn't bad but it is impossible to compare with this masterpiece. The lighting, the movement of the characters, the camera angle, their expression has become more and more fluent and human-like over the year. This is probably the peak of 3d animating.
I can't wait for MinusT to improve more I wonder how amazing his future animations will be..

What I like about this is that had Yukari and Alice not intervened at the end, this would have certainly been a double knockout. This is despite the fact that this is almost certainly an animation from Marisa's PoV. Mostly because Marisa is essentially showing way more emotion, and we get more close ups of her face in regards to her plans and tactic throughout the fight.
You can tell Marisa is struggling during the battle while Reimu doesn’t seem to be trying too hard until later. Her facial expressions look more frustrated than Reimu. Such good details MinusT puts in
and marisa goes to eientei with alice to fight the stage 5 and 6 bosses while reimu and yukari stays behind
True. Both Yukari and Alice used the react Bomb on miss (in the game, after a "miss", i.e. getting hit by danmaku, the player has a limited time to react and press B to perform a more powerful bomb instead of taking a miss).

Reimu and Marisa are the best of friends without a doubt.
But I hope they never declare total war between them.
The day that actually happens... I hope no one in Gensokyo will have a single regret, neither a human, a youkai, a god or whatever. Because the day Reimu and Marisa declare total war between them, all hell will break loose for Gensokyo. If that day ever happens, either they will have to "stop" them among everyone who live in Gensokyo, or it will be over for everyone.

I also love that the only time Marisa hesitated was during the activation of Fantasy Heaven, which is the eight Yen-Yang orb attack that’s shown. In canon, Fantasy Heaven is the true extent of Reimu’s power as the Hakurei shrine maiden and was the only move so far to be so strong that it was unable to be used in spell card battles for a while. It was Marisa herself who gave the move a name and a time limit, which would be why Marisa kinda has an “oh shit, it’s this move” kind of reaction.

@@mauvves It was at least a glancing blow- if you look carefully, after the Double Spark, one of Reimu's sleeves gets frayed at the part closest to the shoulder.

(Also, remember that Last Word spells as shown in fighting games, well, these are insta-Knockout xD)
@@HirokaAkita Honestly how I see it Last words are basically when a matter is extremely serious and only for quickly getting the job done and another thing is that even if the rules are thrown out they are still avoidable and treated as if the rules were still applied

散・集について、前者は仰る通り密度からして散ではなく寂に見えるのですが、後者が明らかに集なので、迷った結果ルナティックではなくノーマルの方の名称に統一させていていただきました。

The more u watch this, the more you realize how much work has gone into each and every bullet. All bullets form a beautiful pattern of things like the atoms star universe and so on.
I love so many little details. Reimu uses her Fantasy Seal (2:31). Marisa uses her Shoot the Moon spellcard (3:51). You can see that the illusionary moon is crumbling (5:22). And at the end when they're interrupted, Reimu is just kind of put off like, "Oh, already?" (6:04) while Marisa is downright angry their duel was stopped (6:07). There's so much heart and intensity in your work that just watching it unfold made me fight back tears. Thank you for sharing your beautiful labor with us.

I love the way this is animated. Each and every attack is so faithful it makes me wish a 3D first-person Touhou game existed.
The cinematography captures the intense energy and atmosphere of the action so well, on par if not better than a lot of mainstream anime action sequences.
It's amazing how you strike that balance between speed and readability. Unlike scenes like in Dragonball, where speed is communicated by people moving so fast you can't possibly see them, you manage to take the viewer along and show each and every action and reaction, as though the viewer themselves were in the place of Reimu or Marisa, without losing that sense of speed and intensity. Too many action scenes resort to slow-motion shots that usually, when done wrong, kill all momentum in the scene.
I hope you never stop making animations. I look forward to your next project!

I really do love how I can follow through what they're doing, how the overall spellcard looks when they activate one, where they are inside the rain of bullets, and of course their expressions and _especially_ their preparation for action which is my favorite aspect

Oh man why hasn't someone given this guy a team and some millions dollars already. This is better than 99% of Hollywood "action" film in the last decade.
I can say for sure that this is *INFINITELY* better than the animes Ex-Arm and Tesla Note.
The problem is the deadline, an Hollywood team couldn't do it properly, also they would had stuffs that would kill touhou (like quotas) this is a world of girls in dresses, they look sometimes too young, it couldn't work for all audience, I'm not even sure they could do a movie with 99% girls in it these days... Even if most of them are ghost or youkai and are very old, the US lobby doens't understand that.
I feel like it's because if you work at a company, you would have less freedom. You would get more resources sure, but there will be people who disagree or just a team deciding not to go with your route which destroys the freedom of creativity or just make the finished product not the same as you would intend. We all know that one guy in the industry that would say "Let's make an underwear joke during the flight fight scene" and that would just ruin the entire experience for some people.
Hi Nguyễn Hữu Phong, I think the same. If there was a team with him there could be an even more amazing product that could come from this. Imagine if there was sound engineers, animator, fact-checkers, and rounds of video checks with a team. If you paid closer attention Yukari sucked up the time orbs (from graze etc in Imperishable Night) with the watch

My favorite part is whenever anyone using their spell card/bullet hell it's so beautiful to look at, it's like wallpaper material xD

There's a lot of little things that truly take this animation to a very high level, but it would take too long to list them all so I will stick with two I like the most:
1. The way this is portrayed is like a battle, with both participants fighting with a lot of strategy. Most of the attacks they use either have fast projectile speed, homing or have some method of restricting movement so that the opponent has to find a way to evade most of the attack, which is really amazing.
2. I really like how you are giving screen time to all of the playable characters. It gives every character a chance to shine, and encapsulates the feeling that this is basically how things generally go in this world.

@@cg5859 You did see the ending right? They are slated to go against each other next video, which is how minusT has done things in the past (showing two different playable characters fight in two separate videos, usually against the final boss or the extra boss).

One could really feel the intensity of the spellcards, while the expression of danmaku still was captured perfectly.

The effects in these has got to be done in the same “genius-like” flair that Monty Oum has. I say this with the highest respect. Even if there weren’t flying anime girls flying, the beautiful and intricate bullet animations would still draw a crowd.

I find that Reimu's homing amulets are sometimes scary. Their pattern may not be as beautiful as other characters' spellcards but they are extremely annoyed to dodge.

There's so much tiny details in the animations and spell details that I'm utterly awestruck.
I love how at 1:38 Marisa literally has what looks like a black hole in the center of her spell, recreating a literal Event Horizon for her spell card
I love the way Reimu's Yin Yang Orbs at 5:12 move and rotate like there's actual weight in them
Marisa's Hakero's parts and components, and the way they reassemble themselves for her Double Spark
The way despite how even this fight seems, Marisa's character as the hardworking underdog vs the naturally talented Reimu is plain to see
That visible frustration of Marisa at 2:52 where she had to bust out her trump card so soon.
Even more frustration of Marisa at 5:17 when she realized Reimu still had another trump card up her sleeve.
It's all so amazingly done. This has been an amazing 7 mins of my life. Thank you MinusT!
I also really like how Reimu's theme starts playing at 1:17 and makes it seem effortless for Reimu but then at 1:54, Marisa shoots her Master Spark and the music suddenly changes as Reimu is snapped back to the reality that this won't be one-sided.

One of the best parts of Marisa's character is simply that she's an example of hard work paying massive dividends. Reimu's ability literally lets her just float through life without making more than a token effort. Everything is effortless to her, making her lazy even has her power puts her decisively in the top of Gensokyo. Marisa meanwhile doesn't take any shortcuts to power, her skill barely even puts her on an even playing ground (the ability to use magic is nothing special in Gensokyo) and Marisa's insistence on remaining human as the "Ordinary Magician" (rather than becoming a Youkai Magician like Patchouli) actually weakens her in the long run.
Yet she has always been remarked to keep pace with Reimu. Through sheer work and grit she manages to keep up with someone whose ability is patently broken.
having rewatched kaliedoscope too thise representation of the bamboo field seems to be based on that down to looking down on the revealed estate after a missed spell card
I love how minusT decided to draw this match, because every Reimu Marisa match fight i saw, reimu always win.
Surprisingly enough, according to CoLA, Marisa doesn't lose to Reimu as often as some would think.
@Gigachad So, 1. they assume the other did something to the moon; 2. they do not knock each other out and the whole incident would be finished without them; and 3. those are the time orbs which are the gimmick of this game, though apparently only for the main story.
