Customer: "my oil is low"
Ford: "here, take this new dipstick that says it's ok to be that low."
That’s not what he’s saying at all lol
Don't forget to remove the low oil light from the ecu.
@@ryangroom2959 that is what he is saying. Ford is changing the definition of what low oil means by either making the fill line higher aka overfilling the case or lowering the mark lower so the oil being low is not as obvious because the line is now two quarts between high and low marks. The oil stick does not increase the oil capacity, it just fools the customers. Ford is not building for the best possible reliability they are building to blue haired EPA overlords. If they can make everything work one mile past warranty they have met their goal.
@@ryangroom2959 i kinda think it is lol, if it has a "wider" ranger that would mean the high level and low level should be a farther apart.
@@williamwoosleyiv6150when you want to be a hater... you often look at things wrong or jump to conclusions. maybe the left the lower limit alone but increased the upper limit.
Can we just say his videos are some of the most informative 60 seconds of knowledge any mechanic could use.
Imagine buying a new truck and having to replace the engine in 3-5 years. Meanwhile my junk 90s trucks are still on the original motor and trans after 300k+.
You don't have to replace the engine it's just a PCM update, fkin listen to the video
@@dustinontaiyabbi5608 you will have to replace the engine, fkin listen to the video. It just wont be while its covered under warranty. They are installing dipsticks to mask the fact that the engines are burning oil.
Yeah my old explorer finally took a shit 455000+ miles on a 92. Engine was perfect trans not so much
But replace your oil every 10g miles. That's 3.14 quarts.
Imagine buying anything new 😅
An ultimate engine brake. The ol blowby brake.
I was gonna say so less engine brake then?
Probably, Chrysler had the same issue with their 2.4 Multiair engines with excessive oil consumption, they tried to fix the issue with the W84 recall where we had to reprogram the PCM, but in the W80 recall we had to replace the long block.
😂
Sounds like a way to get out of paying for a engine to me
If it works, then I’m fine with it
Yea they will say a pcm update when under warranty. But once out of warranty you need an Engine it’s going to cost you about $12000.
Same for the cam timing rattle. I got the middle finger from my Ford dealer at exactly 5 years.
When this happened to Toyota they claim it’s normal and no one batted an eye. It’s even in the Toyota owner manual 1 qt every 1000 miles is acceptable. Lol
@@coupons420 Only if you are foolish enough to go 10k between oil changes.
So they make you think it’s a tuning issue then trick you by putting a shorter dipstick and adding 2 quarts?
Exactly ⬆️
You completely missed what he said, and this is why you people give people like me money to fix your stuff.
@@brucehades6323 I didn't miss anything thing if the manufacturers fix is increasing the range between full and add on the dipstick from one quart to two quarts it's saving Ford millions on warranty work
@@nathandevine552then don’t buy a ford BOO HOO
@@nathandevine552I don't believe it adds any oil, changing the amount of oil the engine requires would be to obvious. It indicates every thing is normal with less oil in the engine. Sounds to me like they are trying to get worn out engines to make it to out of warranty.
Ford absolutely knows how to make a great engine. Those 4.6l were wonderful. Ford chooses to make failures.😔
4.9L I6 calling.....
No, the epa killed those engines
too much money going toward fat paychecks. ford keeps squeezing more quality out of it's products to stay in business. Also, increasing foreign made parts in it's lineup.
@@ricksmith1382 fat executive paychecks anyway.
@@ricksmith1382 just like all manufacturers do with their vehicles anymore, nothin new
Chevy had similar excessive oil consumption issues and Chevy just said "oh yeah thats normal, itll burn 1-2 quarts every 5000 miles." No, thats low tolerances and lazy engineers🤦♂️
It’s sooner buddy. I’ve had friends tell me their truck consumes 1-2 qt’s in 1,000 miles.
Yup. Chevy did have a lot of issues. All makes of vehicles have different problems. No sense bashing one bran or the other. I’ll keep my fords thank you. Cause push come to shove gm broke ford kept going.
I believe the spec used to be 3 quarts at 5k miles. Mind you this is on a 6 quart system. It was acceptable to burn half the oil between oil changes.
All manufacturers have an acceptable amount of oil consumption for engines, some more than others but they all do
Built Ford tough!!!! More like Ford just built it tough to work on
I love the southern pernunciation of ingine "ole"
Let me guess you're a Yankee that says "oieyul"
That's the best way to say it.
I love the way this guy talks lol
This guy says "ole", another CZcams shorts guy says "orr"
@@caterpillarslim1288 How do you pronounce, soil, Toil, Boyle,.? ,
soul, toll, bowl? Correct and concise vocabulary mitigates confusion.
Their oil burning fix is to add 2 quarts more than the motor was designed for, and a new dipstick to make this seem normal? Geez...
You’re not adding 2 additional quarts of oil, the dipstick is letting the motor burn 2 quarts of oil before it reaches the minimum tab.
That 5.0 engine is an 8 qt of oil motor at each oil change. That’s what the dealer charges for each oil change.
"than the motor was designed for" who's instructing a changing of the dipstick? Ford. Who designed the engine? FORD. Who's dealers is this getting done in? FORD
I'm reminded of a tab Ford had in the early eighties. On some engines when idling when warm, the oil pressure gauge would show low. The tab had a connector you put between the sending unit and the wiring harness that would cause the gauge to read higher oil pressure.
Im reminded that GM claimed in a court of law, that a quart of oil used in 600 miles, was not excessive in LS enines. So a quart in 3000 miles doesn't seem bad.
So they do a "PCM update" and then change the dipstick to make you think you are not burning oil anymore. Cool. Wonder if the motor will last 150K miles. Probably not.
I’ve seen quite a few over 150k even without this being addressed, keep up on your maintenance and you’ll be fine
2018 Ford F-150 (5.0 liter) 225,000+ miles, does Not use or drip oil. Change oil at 6,000 miles.
@@lrb4You can just purge off some of the vacuum through the evap system .
IMPOSSIBLE @@user-vl8sw7kg7y
For what it's worth, mine has had that mod and is at 150k now, and I am currently in the process of getting an engine for it. Mine burns 4 quarts at 2k miles. You would never know it just by hearing or seeing it run. It doesn't smoke or anything. I just actually check my oil unlike a lot of people and caught it.
This is a good example of why I dumped my 2018 with only 29k miles. The 10r80 broke this camel's back.
Was it a POS?
@@Dee12327 the owner?
My 2018 has 175,000 on it with original transmission and engine. Think I'll keep it !
@@thomasblankinship98same i have 2018 215000 kms it does burn oil but i dont mind it runs great all i have to do its keep looking at the oil wich i have to fill 1 liter per oil change but still a great truck i wouldnt trade it since i know people with gmc denalis and rams with horrible trans problems
Their is a sleave kit made for this. It was at the latest Sema event.
So basically open up the throttle body slightly so some air can get in to reduce vacuum and add an extra quart of oil. Seems abit of a bandaid fix to me.
Got a 2020 and change oil every 3k miles. Period. I don't have any consumption.... MAYBE a 1/4 of a quart MAYBE.
By 2020 it was mostly fixed and found out about the issue is actually due to a different coating on the inside of the cylinder that was thinner than previous coatings, causing the blow by.. they tried the new coasting in 2018 then started fixing it in 2020 they just wanted to save face by saying it’s excessive pressure etc so they didn’t have to replace everyone’s engines
@@92auggieboiyou are correct. The 18-19 5.0s in the F150 and Mustang changed the cylinder walls to a thinner material, which allows oil consumption and ticking that was similar to lifter tick. Ford had a ton of buy-backs on those.
This is my experience so far. I don't have any issues with oil consumption on my 5.0 .
Back in the day on the later 300 6's oil would just " disappear" meaning no leaks😂😂
Ford changed the cylinder liner material in 2018. My 2017 5.0 never used oil.
My 2018 F-150 truck was one of them. After spending 4K and nobody able to fix it (it kept shutting down) I traded it in last year and got myself a Toyota Camry 2024.
Toyota and the Toyota company are MUCH better.
In 2019 when I was truck shopping I didn't feel comfy with any of the f150 engine options. Went F250 with the 6.2 with the 6 speed and 4.30's and its been great. Only issue was death wobble from a bad steering stabilizer handled under warranty.
I been saying this since day 1 of that 2020 I drive for work. It has always burned oil. Now it's about 1.5-2 quarts per change. You can't tell me it's all from de-acceleration. When I'm sitting in the morning after idling to warm up and to take off I have a blue cloud I'm not de-accerating at all to get this cloud!😂😂
Oh and this is on an engine with 75k miles
I had two brand new Ford pickup trucks they both used two to three quarts of oil before a 3,000 mile oil change. I used one quart of slick, 50 per truck never used or burned oil an increase the power acceleration spot on. Both trucks had over 147,000 miles before selling them off still ran good never changed spark plug until 110,000 miles
I have an 08 Gmc Sierra with close to 195k miles and doesn't burn a lick of oil. Crazy how such a new vehicle could be having these problems.
Same here, 99 chev blazer 4.3, burns no oil (10w40, hot climate) ... I'm keeping it forever
So if they are still consuming oil even at a half quart 3k interval, those pre-cats and primary cat are going to have short lives🤷🏻♂️
A quart at 3000 miles is nothing
Probably keeps throttle plate open some or adjust valve timming
They hold almost 9 quarts. Here's a thought. Check your oil and top it off. Plenty of 5.0 out there with over 300,000 highway miles. Also change the oil at 3500 miles no matter what. Stop worrying.
7.7 quarts
This is the exception not the norm. Around 2 million f150 sold between 2018 and 2020. You only hear the bad and never the good. How many people never experience an issue in their 5.0, because they don't have them. If everyone did, there would be a class action lawsuit against Ford.
@@leechburglights Not that many had the 5.0 V8.
@leechburglights there us a class action lawsuit against Ford. Look it up.
Awesome pcm flash and add more oil to pan so customers don’t notice a problem 🔧🔧🔧🔧🔧
Thank you sir for the great info.
Chrysler did this exact thing with there 2.4 tiger shark. Trying to get every last mpg.
Love your knowledge, I listen to what u have to say.
love the info
And that's why I sold mine and also the phasers went bad. Went to an 11 6.7 and love it
Any 302 from the 70s thru the 90s all used a quart of oil between oil change. Evey 5k miles, it was precisely 1qt low. When i spoke to Ford about it, they acknowledged that it has been happening since the 302 came out. I was told not to worry and drive it. 200k miles before i traded the truck in. Never had an issue
That was conventional motor oil. And you should have been changing it every 3k miles.
Ford moment
a longer dipstick is wild
Love the old Ford Trucks..!! 🛻
Sounds great for the environment.
You would think as long as Ford has been in business they would be good at building things
Actually the motor calls for 8.9 quarts after their so called tsb it’s 7.7quarts I think don’t quote me on this, dip stick range is adjusted to new oil specs then they reprogram it so when you let off gas throttle body doesn’t close as fast causing less vacuum they think, the lower oil in pan wouldn’t pull as much oil up ,after the tsb was done on my truck no change still sucking oil plus when they reprogrammed the computer truck seems like it’s lost 20hp , but if you know anything about this it’s the something to to with rings sleeves or whatever not a mechanic just a use to be owner of one, now someone else’s problem
The oil spec for my brother's 2006 Ranger is 5W20. The Haynes manual says 10W30 but 5W20 for the 2010. I guess the paper manuals weren't updated when the spec was changed. Yes I did find the TSB changing the spec. It currently burns 1 quart per 2500km but it used to burn it in 200-300km with 5W20.
Mayson your a great guy sharing all this information id like to see you work on a build that you like
My wife and I had to put a new motor in our Volkswagen Tiguan, used 1.5 Quarts of oil a month. Under warranty of course but 9000 miles on the odometer and the last time we ever buy a Volkswagen
Almost every dealership SB requires a pcm update 😂
Solid advice and presented well. I laugh at auto companies, their fixes involve hanging readings by placement etc. one of those my car is making noise and I can't hear my radio even turned up loud, fix, put an amplifier on the radio so it plays louder. These are not fixes but bandaids to get you out of warranty.
I'll bet a dollar the update slows the throttle plate speed on decel
the legendary Ford Doctor
I just did this exact pcm update on an f150 the other day. For the exact reason.
2011 F150 5.0 V8 with 150k miles burning 1 quart a month - 1 quart per every 961 miles and growing.
just added 1% throttle plate command on decel and got a performance long throw dipstick. clever engineers saved ford big money lol
I know chrysler has the same thing with their 2.4 miltiair engines. Pcm update for oil consumption. Nothing with the dipstick though.
This reminds me of jeep and the “ecu update” for the clutches in the JLs
Dang Ford addressed the issue. I remember Cadillac responded to 1 qt loss between 3k oil changes as normal consumption. And worse sent bottles of stop leak for problematic coolant leaks. (In fairness i haven't worked in a dealership since 2004)
Also a throttle body position change so it does not close completely on deceleration.
My 5.0 2014 has been the best truck I’ve ever owned
looks like they're going to drive around like me with gallons of oil in the Box in behind the cab
Man young bro you are on your game
I just got through done training about that. We still get some that come in with that complaint.
And it's crazy the solution is basically what he said update the pcm And get a longer dipstick problem solved.
Which to me is silly to just put a longer dipstick on that. But we haven't had any issues And a customer seem satisfied.
Ford - “Solving” real hardware problems with software 👍🏻
This sounds like a breather issue paired with the breathers straight into the intake
The still burn oil after the update anyways lol😂
Not true in all cases. In most cases the software update fixed the issue. For those who it didn't fix, ford authorized a new engine.
Add two quarts and a bigger dipstick so when it burns off it’s at factory recommended level
Man the ac barely had anything in it when the ac shop checked it. Yes the pressures were correct when running gauges on it but you have to vacuum down the system and see how much you capture to really diagnose a lousy ac. Leak still undetermined. Been working at it all summer ain’t seen no dye but still loosing charge so something got messed up when dalton did the hack job
I used this tsb many times as the dispatcher to help out the techs !!
I don't think that Henry would be very happy to hear about all of this.
If it’s actually true that it has so much vacuum in the manifold then the ECU update makes sense to me. You can open the throttle blade a little bit and reduce engine timing in those areas to reduce vacuum. But I’m sure this will be used to bandaid warranty claims which isn’t ok.
Add 5W-50 oil it won’t burn a drop. The coyote in my Mach 1 was burning 1.5-2.0 quarts every 5,000. Switched it 5W-50 like ford performance uses and it doesn’t burn a drop.
So basically add more oil to mask the problem? That’s cool
Absolutely crazy that we have 10ish customers with this motor and over 300,000 miles and none of them have oil consumption issues. (All of them are oil field trucks.)
Exactly what they did with my 2018 F150 55K, gotta take it back this week and it has a noise in engine
They need to make a higher flowing PVC!
or better baffled valve cover
Funny, they use small diameter tubing, the thought of putting larger cavity to slow down that air speed so that heavy materials will fall out of suspension, have had to do on several engines. Newer PVC valves are thin, older valves were large body reducing to hose and constant rise, lot of the current engines performed tubing is level to dropping after valve
Only if people didn't;
- Ride their trucks like a racecar
- Change their oil 3k to 5k mile intervals
Catch can is a good fix for this!
Insane that part of the fix it a new dipstick.
That sure is a nice Band-Aid you put on that open wound there Ford
VQ boys aren’t alone anymore😂
So change the vaccuum pressure is the fix . Then there should be no need to over fill the crankcase . And use a shorter stick. Un less u change the to a deep style pan.
Catch can helps alot
Customer: My truck seems to be burning a lot of oil.
Ford: Just buy an extra case of oil and check the level every 500 miles!
So glad my 18 doesn’t have that. I’m running 5w-40 though. Screw the 5w-20.
So you changed the timing
Haha love making something old and simple sound new
No. This has nothing to do with timing. The software update merely changes throttle body positions during decel to avoid high vaccum in manifold.
I worked for FCAs national warranty center and almost ever recall or TSB is a computer update of some kind. Its just b.s. to save the company money and look like they are addressing a problem.
Ford: Just add two more quarts, should be fine 😂
Yeah when I first bought my 5.0 it was sucking up all like crazy I took it back to the dealer I don't know what they did to it but when I got it back it didn't suck any oil at all I'm assuming he did they did just what you just said those motors do have problems with oil consumption you are definitely right is suck my oil down to almost half
What’s the update do? essentially it shuts the throttle less in those heavy load deceleration. Less restriction = less manifold vacuum.
Ford gonna be denying warranty repairs due to oil starvation when techs note that the customer was 1.5qt low on oil 😂
I think I’ll keep my ‘88 F150, a few more decades.
Wait about the dip stick. Was part of the solution to lower the minimum level by 2 quarts?
Nah no way ford said "oh your oils low? Well take this dipstick that says it ain't" 😭😭😭
2020 ford f150 with the coyote. Out of the blue both banks O2 sensors 1 and 2 all rich yes all 4 at the same time. Make it make sense and what would cause that. Runs fine.
This is the exact reason why I sold my 2018 F150.
It seems to be a thing now a days. Im not sure if its the oil or the manufacturing but my kia sorrento blew up with 106k on the clock and it had just had an oil with synthetic. My mother in laws hyundai tuscon was using oil but not burning or losing it and we just had a prius with no issues use up 2 quarts. Weird times.
What bout 5.4 Triton cam fazzers?
Well...... Ford actually has a fix for the common oil consumption. It's no secret that Ford's use oil. At least they figured it out, finally.
Does this just purge through the evap system?
my 2003 and 2007 e250 both do the same thing. and it doesn't smoke either
Question, would removing the CAT’s work to reduce vacuum and allow the engine to breath more?
It’s due to ford not giving a F since the 90’s. Rip 🪦 Ford motor compAny
