At least they aren't tedious, predictable meta jokes, people think they're so funny by being "ironic" just for irony's sake. It's not ironic, it's hypocritical. No one thinks you're funny to do what you just criticized, nothing about it is endearing and you should cry ig you do.

    Even as someone who likes this show, I can't stand the shipping! It's honestly frustrating at this point, but especially with Tom. I hate that they develop him so much and make him work on his flaws, but his fate is ultimately to be part of a love triangle and eventually will probably be dumped so Starco can happen and the fans can get what they want.
    Also I agree that it's overrated. While I do enjoy it, I don't think it's the best show ever.

    • @jackgarcia5926
      @jackgarcia5926 Před 6 lety +33

      Tom doesn't have character development you fools, he changed for sure, but he did so entirely behind the scenes.
      The show clearly didn't think he was worth the trouble of actually giving him screen time and giving him proper character work, because clearly what the show needed was a hamfisted second love triangle.
      Tom has been handled horribly, worse than Pony head and Jackie, those two ultimately didn't go anywhere but at least they were consistent.
      Tom changed so drastically, in such a short period of time that it's enough to give you whiplash, yet somehow never gave him the time of the day, instead every single episode he was featured in post demoncism (an episode that already didn't work because it had not proper build up) was dedicated to showcasing why his relationship with Star was horrible for everyone.
      Tom is overrated as all hell, but he still had potential, now they just squandered that and we are only left with an overrated character that still somehow remains flat.
      I wasn't Tom biggest fan, but even i feel offended by how poorly the show handled him, the only thing that pisses me off more, is people pretending that he wasn't horribly handled, at this point it would be better if they simply dropped him off to the wayside.

    • @Shadowrose54321
      @Shadowrose54321 Před 6 lety +62

      @Jack Garcia
      Tom's Character Development:
      1: Realizing he can feel guilty for tricking Marco.
      2: Knowing that he likes songs aimed for girls like Marco.
      3: Showing that his way of "giving someone space" is completely ignoring him showing that he's an ass.
      4: Showing that he hates his dark side so much he rather just wash away his feelings.
      You can argue that these are bad examples but to say he doesn't get any development is pretty wrong. Out of everyone he has the most influence to change. Were Marco and Star don't seem to have any real reason to change except their impending doom or other life changing scenarios.

    • @jackgarcia5926
      @jackgarcia5926 Před 6 lety +17

      Shadowrose54321 You are mistaking character development, for character plot points. The show gives the bases for character development and work for Tom, but they never build up on them, they never actually put in any of the work. And effectively, everything that happens off screen, doesn't actually happen in any meaningful capacity.
      In Tom's case the show uses the truly horrid Steven Universe MO of character development, basically just giving small hints about certain characters/plot points, let the fans go crazy with head canons, speculation and what not, and then just confirm it to be true without ever actually putting any work of building the bases. It is effectively building a bridge, except you only build up the start and the end, and allow other people to do absolutely everything in between, and then swoop in to take the credit. it's like if a person gifted you a cube of legos, the you built up an amazing model of the statue of liberty or what not, and then you started praising the person that gifted you the legos for his amazing work on the model.
      The show gives you clues that Tom is working to change for the better, that he has a budding friendship with Marco, but they NEVER actually do anything with any of those things. To this date, the only things Marco and Tom have in common is that they both like a boy band (which Star and Jackie also enjoy, so it's not like it's something unique to them) and that they both like/admire Star, which is really just a contentious point, like becoming friends with some dude in a store's line because you both want the same super special edition of a game, of which there's only one copy. Can a relationship possibly be more shallow? this is only exacerbated by the fact that Marco has no real reason to want to be Tom's friend because he is a massive asshole to him for most of the series. Heck, the episode where their supposed friendship is introduced even ends with them ribbing each other, hinting that it's not exactly a conventional relationship, and that they ain't quite there on the friendship plateau. How does the show follow up with this? with a super short cameo and on a completely unrelated episode where Tom is an asshole, again. And from there Tom just drops completely from the show for almost an entire season, and the next time they meet, they are apparently super close friends, what. the. fuck.
      Not only is it super lazy, it's even worse when you consider the show lives and dies by show, don't tell, which is exactly how they handle their important characters. But Tom is an antithesis of it, which only makes it even more jarring.
      Then there's the fact that his re-introduction to the main plot is about as smooth as a bed of spikes. Tom is completely MIA for close to an entire season, and then they shove him into a relationship with Star for the very transparent purpose of padding out the shipping for another godamn season. Never mind that Star despised Tom for most of the series, and that they were at each other's throat's for the entire episode to the point they were about to trade freaking blows, this of course is completely reverted in a manner of MINUTES in the most impossibly jarring and lazy way possible, cuz they danced, holy fuck.
      Let's talk about character design, it's more than simply how a character will look, it also encompasses what role the character will have in the story, how they will interact with other characters etc. It's no secret that the show on it's first season was far more light hearted and seemed to aim more for a villain of the week/ Weekly adventure format over an overarching plot.
      Tom was created to be a weekly antagonistic force, not that different from Ludo, or that pirate rabbit thingy, or the hand puppet robot. It's his very design, he was created to be a thorn in the MC's side, and this is particularly obvious in his original role, where he would threaten with destroying earth if Star didn't go to a dance with him. He went trough. changes before his implementation, obviously, but it still shows what his original role was meant to be, an antagonistic supporting character.
      From then on the show, and by proxy Tom, change direction. And Tom is cast into a different kind of role, one that isn't supposed to be antagonistic anymore, but the show doesn't bother putting in any kind of character work to make his character design actually work on that new position, which is just fucking dumb. This is even more obnoxious when you realize the writers fucking know this, because both Buff Frog and ESPECIALLY Ludo were characters that made seamless transitions into their new roles because the show actually cared and did the work required for them.
      Ludo was designed to be a goofy villain of the week, the writers clearly knew that if they wanted him to be genuinely threatening, and for him to truly up the stakes of the plot, it would take real work. And that's exactly what they did, and some of these episodes focusing on Ludo are still some of the best episodes in the entire series, and also make Ludo not only incredibly unique, but also a very good character.
      Tom, on the flip side not only attempts one of the most tricky character transitions there are (the dreaded redemption arc) but they also half ass it in a truly impressing manner. Every single meaningful step in a half decent redemption, they skip it in the most lazy way possible, and instead they just skip to the end of it. And the few episodes that actually try to build him up as a character are questionable at best.
      The development doesn't actually exist if it doesn't happen on screen, y'know? where the ACTUAL story telling and therefore all of the show's value actually happens. Potential is worth squat if it's not actually exploited, Tom has development scraps and those ain't even good. It's not that the character is bad, it's that the way the show handled him is absolutely atrocious. And the fact that people actually praise that train wreck of laziness legit pisses me off.
      Also, from a fellow tales fan, i like your avatar.

      While I'm not really a fan of the show, I used to really like Tom for a while. :T Oh boy you wrote a lot.
      This is also a super late reply. . .
      But here goes anyway!! (But first I want to say that they way you explain things is. .O GODLY!)
      Character plot points go hand to hand with character development from the most part. The way you speaking of it makes you feel like the two can't equate. But all I mentioned is character development(Or I guess growth). It doesn't mean it's good or anything I'm just saying that characters in the show do go through development. I know what you mean now though. Basically that none of the development is done in show.
      Which basically mean the show never actually shows the development. Just kind of places it there and expects you to be okay with it.
      But lmao!! Your point about the legos is so true. I'm not defending the show, I don't think it's well written either. I'm just saying that they do go through some type of growth. But you're right about everything ;A; I guess the way I wrote it seemed like I was just outright disagreeing with you.
      I wish I had more to write but I basically agree with everything you said.
      :U Thanks though! I also love Tales Of Games. I feel like me and you could get along.
      I plot out characters for fun so reading everything was really enlightening. You'd probably enjoy role-playing or being a story board artist. I'd love to be able to work on stuff like that with someone like you.

    In my opinion Marco should not have moved to Mewni. The whole thing felt forced as heck and seeing that season 3 was a major turning point for the series, leaving Marco behind was probably the best way to emphasize that. The dude barely even played any significant role in the whole season, you could entirely remove him from season 3 and it would still play out the same.

My answer today is probably different from my answer next week. My point being, teenager's emotions can be very unstable and confusing, and I think SVTFOE portrays that very well. Its a very wild ride of a show, with large changes happening a lot, whether it's with characters or setting. I can relate because as a teenager, my life is a wild ride. Because of this, SVTFOE is my second favorite show of all time. It might have many flaws, and have a lot of sudden big changes, but my life has many flaws and sudden big changes.

Of course, often times it her mistakes and how she overcomes them which is the backbone of most of the episodes, but even after the season one finale I felt there was no character change. Star is never going to reach the levels of Gravity Falls, but at least it’s worth to appreciate the direction the story is taking, and hopefully, we’ll see it improve as it goes on.
    On the other hand, another Disney TV Show that’s surprisingly worth to check is the Tangled series. Even if it’s based on a movie, the story is actually a bit darker than the original and the songs are a bit of a step up.
    Also, we’re getting other shows that seem promising as they follow the same pattern as Star of having female lead characters in mystical worlds, like The Owl House.

    6:03 YES. YESSSSSSSSSSS THIS. This is the biggest character problem I have with SVTFOE at this moment. Marco aged 16 years, and yet in a following episode, cares about a math test he has to take in school. The fact that he has now become a full grown adult who is still stuck in a kid's body means he'll have gone through a HUGE maturity shift--- one far too great to just write it off as barely noticeable whatsoever as he DOESN'T DO ANYTHING NEW THAT AN ADULT WOULD DO. He just continues to interact with his peers and family as if nothing has changed--- playing dungeons and dragons, and dating his still teenage girlfriend Jackie as if awkward Marco-phase never quite left, and continuing to be a freshman in high school. To me, this just isn't how any character who has realistically gone through this stuff would continue to react. And this is a MAJOR parallel to Steven Universe, that I see now as I am saying this. Crazy life-changing stuff happens to Steven on that show, and to virtually every other character, and yet they continue to act just... unrealistically in response to it all.

    Thank you! You're not the only one who doesn't like Star vs. The Forces of Evil. You laid out most of what is wrong with the show perfectly. My main problem with the show is Star Butterfly herself. (and her family history). Now the term Mary Sue has became an umbrella term for a bad character. And if you make the story interesting enough, you can get away with a Mary Sue. But Star? That's how I can describe her. She's a Mary Sue and not engaging at all. Think about it. She's overpowered (basically ripping off Sailor Moon and killing Toffee in one hit), almost everyone loves her, she barely gets into trouble and even if she did it's a mere slap on the wrist. Like in the pilot episode. She BURNS DOWN HER KINGDOM. Instead of punishing her, taking away the wand or banishing her until she learns her lesson they just shrug it off and go "she can't handle it" and send her to earth to train. Or that episode where she sabotages Marco's date, destroyed stuff with her wand and she barely gets a major punishment. Heck half the time she doesn't apologize to Marco when she drags him in the mess SHE made. Tom was a wasted character. He seems to genuinely want to get back together with Star but because of that forced Star/Marco ship it's slowing down potential and development. Star's personality is either flat (overly happy all the time) or just constantly changes. Her family is also wasted because you have this buildup of a family of royals who aren't royal. That could have been a really interesting story. Heck a descendant of an evil queen was good enough! It makes me so frustrated that they threw it out the window.
    About her wand, I do agree I like the design but I feel it's a little too childish and simplistic. Okay I get it. Star is childish but she's 14. The wand looks like a rattle and even when she "matures" it's still too simplistic. Why can't they go for a more complicated design? Look at Moon's version of the wand! It compliments her AND it's not too simplistic and looks very creative. It kinda reminds me of those fancy glass bottles. But a few questions. Why does it have a wand charger when there's a unicorn in the wand? Doesn't the unicorn need to eat or go to the bathroom? Why does it perform all of this magic when Moon couldn't kill Toffee? Heck Eclipsa used dark magic and it worked just fine. But when moon does it it fails? Why is there so much build up with this wand when the show isn't centered around it to begin with? Toffee wanted to destroy the wand but....why? He could have used it to conquer Mewni! Or rule the world! If there was a rewrite of this show or something, I would probably like it better than the actual show

Like Moon taking pole dancing and her being naked in front of her daughter in the realm of magic. Isn't she a queen? That's not queen like at all if she takes pole dancing classes and sometimes the story makes you wanna feel but you're left feeling nothing. Like Meteora's backstory. I get they're trying to make us believe she was abused but there isn't enough time and effort to make the story believable. It would have been more effective if you show her as a five year old being ripped away from her mother. The writing is so lackluster it feels lazy half the time.

It's like "Kevin's Party" episode of Steven Universe when Connie was upset about Steven giving himself up, then just leading up to a party where it just shows Connie and Steven becoming friends again... What I'm saying is, so many people just follow others by saying there's so much shipping when that's what helps this show's type of plot.

We went from Toffee to Eclipsa quite seamlessly, but there was such a focus on Monsters and Mewmans, and yet it all just sorta stopped. We never every saw Buff Frog be Mewni’s monster expert, but supposedly it was a rough job for him. I’d rather have a series show rather than tell. I like the show a lot, but it has its problems. honestly, it has been the worst decision the show has ever taken.
      Also, finally! someone else actually noticed the massive waste that was the Monsters rights plot line! if they hadn't wasted time on a second and completely unnecessary love triangle and actually fleshed out the monster's rights plotline, i might actually have felt something for star in the mid season finale, when her efforts crumbled away.

    Ok, this is going to be long. The shipping dude, omg the fucking shipping is what have ruined this series the most. The worst part is that lots of teenagers who are SVTFOE fans see themselves as “victims of love” just as Star did herself while she was the one who pushed Marco to be with Jackie on the first place to then ruin their relationship with that confession just to find out she completely forgot about him days after that with Tom (when basically she only used Tom to forget about him). And yeah, this is important because the series is showing Star as a “victim” every single time, it even portrayed Marco as a bad person just because he got to finally be with someone else (someone that he has always liked) but when Star gets together with Tom and even had the nerve to rub her new relationship to Marco’s face and to ignore him everyone in the fandom approved this behavior but the worst part was when the entire community of fans stated that “Marco deserved this” because “reasons”. I used to liked the series for the plot (the main plot) but the shipping thing just made this series shittier, immature and totally not enjoyable.

I don’t ship Starco at all, but love Jarco and Tomstar. Starco is too forced and the fandom doesn’t help with that aspect. Janna only appears rarely sometimes, Buffrog hasn’t really been utilized they didn’t even do much with his expert job and they just wrote him out with the other monsters so they likely won’t explore him anymore unless the plot demands it and Ludo also hasn’t been utilized. As far as I know he only had one appearance of importance to the plot after battle for Mewni and I’m not even sure where they’re going with his character.

      Squid Spork though i still love the show i so agree with you, many characters i loved just left and i feel like the show one time is focusing on one plot and leaves you thinking they will continue it, but then it either just jumps straight to one plot and ignores the other or just abandons it completely and/or is finished anticlimaticly and .... ohhh boy, the shipping ..... do i seriously need to talk about how much of a diservice to the show is the fact that Starco tease even exists? Like i love how the show sets up all these sentimental clichés to destroy them, but the whole romsntic subplot completely goes against this, they basically have the 2 main characters, who are best friends, develop romantic feelings for eachother and only realize when one is dating another one of their love interests and have told you since season 1 that they are destined to be together (via blood moon bond in the case of thus show, wich also makes it feel kinda forced as they have very little options of who to date due to this curse always screwing up their other relationships and probably heing the only reason why they are attracted to eachother in the first place), these 4 things combined make up the most cliché thing ever and i have hope that again this is just the show setting up a major sentimental cliché to destroy it and Star and Marco don't end up together, i would give a lot of praise to the writters if they did this. As stated before, i still love the show, i would probably even call it my favorite, but they really need to stop trying to focus on too many plots, leaving some unresolved and making me feel like what we went through in episodes that i count as the best of the show was just a waste of time and they really need to stop the shipping.

    Ok, saying Running with Scissors was pointless just isn’t true. The events in that episode and battle for Mewni are what lead him to deciding to leave Earth and become a knight. It also transformed him into a more confident leader which payed off in the season 3 finale. Also the combat training he got in that episode has been crucial to several episodes since then.
    From his return we already got hints that his experiences changed how he sees Earth and how he’s grown out of wanting to date Jackie (which is why he desperately tries to make it work even when he knows it can’t).

He had trouble fighting Bird and Spider of all things and he hasn't been on equal footing with Star anymore. Star's been the one getting all the powerups and spotlight, and Marco has been left in the dust.

    • @jakepulley8155

      @stonefree7973 Před 6 lety +34

      Jake Pulley Not imo. The Warnicorns weren't as big as they were in previous episodes, these spells were cast in an enclosed space so that hinders their destructive capability, Marco was pretty much forced to win so the plot could go forward(the show doesn't take fight scenes seriously anymore imo), and I can honestly think of more destructive or better spells than the ones Star cast.

    Season two was probably the strongest season in terms of overall writing, and "Ludo in the Wild" was the best episode. In fact, I would go so far as to say that "Ludo in the Wild" is the best 11-minute episode of the entire series, and "Bon Bon the Birthday Clown" is the best 22-minute episode. The writing has become much weaker in season three.
    "Missed opportunities for development" is incredibly true for season three in particular. I'm surprised to hear that you like season three the best -- I thought the latest season had some incredibly weak writing in terms of setup-payoff and some uneven pacing. Season two had a _very_ slow burn in terms of exploring Star's secret feelings for Marco as well as plot-related developments, whereas the third season rushes through all that, pausing from time to time for awful episodes ("The Bogbeast of Boggabah").

      I agree. Star is much more focused on progressing the storyline than Steven universe lately which seems to just meander back and forth between the slice of life/townie eps and gem related eps. Like honestly, with SU I feel like it's always one step forward and ten steps back - basically we're getting nowhere with the story. But I'm a person who has to know how the story ends so I'll still be watching SU even though it's lost my interest but in terms of the better show I'd have to say it's star vs as I'm a person who values progressing the story over everything else.

    I like this show. I do. But I'm not going to pretend that I don't have grievances with it.
    I LOOOVE that they stepped up the stories and the atmosphere of the show in seasons 2 and especially 3 compared to season 1. But the damn "romances" keep mucking it up. And even now it still feels like it's not going to be resolved even going into season 4.
    And even in regards to the stories, it doesn't feel like we're seeing anything really "wrapped up" either. Sure there was the Toffee arc, but I honestly thought they WASTED his character AND his appeal in the Star vs lore. There's also the ongoing conspiracy about the Butterfly family not rightfully earning the throne, which looks like is going to be a major plot point of season 4 as well.
    Things are certainly always developing, but nothing ever feels fully resolved either. It's frustrating.
    As far as the characters go, I can definitely see that I'm a lot more forgiving to them than you are. At least in general. Ponyhead is obnoxious as hell, Glossaryck's character is just baffling to me, and I could not care less for Ludo. And the funny part is they are giving him, or at least trying to give him, some actual depth.

    Totally agree with basically all of the first half of the video (especially about Glossarick and Ponyhead. I find them so annoying).
    The show getting rid of more and more characters as it went on is something I actually liked, since it just meant spending more time with the actually interesting characters.
    The story being a bit messy is another thing that I get but don't really mind, since I usually watch StarVs as a popcorn show to just have some fun for maybe an hour if I have free time, so not a big deal for me, but I totally understand why it would be for others.

    I got a similar problem with the shipping. But especially in regards to Tom who is one of the BEST written characters on the show, I love him a lot and he's one of the biggest reasons I still like the show.
    But bringing him in for the love triangle nonsense like this? Like I'm enjoying seeing him and star together, but then there are things like Star ignoring him and marco kissing her while she's dating Tom that really bother me.
    Like if the show has the intent to get star and marco together, having them not only be horrible partners to Tom and jackie, but also have them directly lined to cheating is making them less and less appealing as a couple and more like them dating each other sends some really bad messages.
    Not to mention Marco in s3 is a unlikable character half the time, which also doesn't help -_-
    I still like the show, and I find enjoyment in it still. But I share similar opinions on the love stuff and honestly I would much rather focus on characters like eclipsa or tom these days then any romance between star and marco.

    • @jackgarcia5926

      Tom is horribly written, possibly the most mangled character in the entire show. The show just *baaaareeely* taped on a character arc for Tom in season 2, and then poof, he was gone for half a season, and then they just cram him in season 3 with no lube or build up whatsoever and he is apparently completely developed off screen, what the actual flying fuck?
      At first i tought it was a red herring, and it was going to be revealed that Tom was being dishonest again, and that would be the catalyst for his actual development. because surely, the writers of this show cannot be this incompetent right?
      haha! nope, they played it straight!
      After his extremely abrupt and poorly executed introduction, the only thing the show does is show Tom for like 3 seconds per episode if he is in the episode at all, and when he does actually get some lime light, it is dedicated to show why his relationship with Star is dysfunctional, and to constantly drive the point home that Tom is Star's rebound, nothing more than a fall back plan, what the shit!?
      The boothbuddies happens and i think to myself ''Well since the relationship that obviously had no future will soon end, maybe they'll pick up on his development afterwards?'' i mean, Tom had basically been in stasis, his character didn't go anywhere, he was just...there, a plot device meant to enable the romantic plotline, kind of like Jackie.
      And then woof, divide and conquer happens and they cramp every single aspect of a Tom development in an incredibly rushed and cluncky fashion, the markings of a redemption arc that should have happened a season ago, the bonding with Marco which was absolutely out of place because they hadn't had interactions for almost two and a half seasons, and even the supposed climax of his character arc ''letting go'' of Star practically.
      It was absolutely pitiful, Pony head as been better written than Tom, i can scarcely believe the writers could fuck up a character this badly.
      Tom was never all that, working with character flaws is grade school levels of character development/conflict, in truth he was kind of middle tier, since his main scthick was pretty basic, and his little screen time made him rather flat as a character. But man, he deserved better.
      But as Legend of Korra, Steven Universe, Adventure Time and other shows had clearly demonstrated, as long as your character is aesthetically pleasing, your character has an even remotely interesting characteristic and you pretend you are actually developing them, people will suck it up like a metroid does a brain, it doesn't matter how atrocious it may be, how mangled the development maybe or even how trite the ultimate development is, people will fill in the blanks with supposition, self insert, make believe and goodwill, i call it ''the Marceline Syndrome''

    • @jackgarcia5926
      @jackgarcia5926 Před 6 lety

      cestalia Marco doesn't leave Jackie, he actively begs her to give him a second chance, Jackie is the one that dumps him because she is smart enough to know she does't deserve to be second fiddle.
      If you type something like Marco ''left'' Jackie, i am not entirely confident of your ability to digest and understand media, that would also explain why you like Tom.
      Tom had bigger character developments because they were crammed in 4 episodes with no actual build up or character work, just the changes, we refer to this as ''hamfisted'' writing, Star doesn't have that luxury, because for all it's shortcoming, one character you can trust the show will not fuck up too badly is Star.
      And even then, bigger changes doesn't translate into ''more interesting'' changes, contending with personal flaws and becoming a better person are grade school levels of character development, and people have been calling it for a while now, it's simple and predictable, how is it any different from the Starco most Tom fans hates?
      An interesting development for Tom would have been to have him contend with the fact that his worst actions are borne from selfishness and pride, and not anger, to have him finally face the fact that he has been using anger issues as his go to excuse for his more insidious flaws as a person.
      But nah, that would have been too much for the show that doesn't even bother giving Tom an episode in more than two seasons.
      I am starting to suspect this show hates Tom.

    Okay my main issue I have with this argument, you critsized SVTFOE for having character and story problems then praised Steven Universe even though it has the same problems.
    Steven Universe has glaring character issues considering how many episodes it has. You don't learn much about main character lore until the very end of season one and even that focus is miniscule. The worst thing about Steven universe is the lack of focus on story! I mean season two there is a massive challenge place in front of the team in the first couple of episodes, then it's ignored until the last two episodes in which the problem is solved in a matter of minutes.
    Not only that but juding Star's animation to Steven Universe is night and day. Yes Steven Universe has a beautiful art style, but characters are often off model, and the animation is ridiculously underwhelming. Every camera angle is the same and movement even in fight scenes is just blah.

    I gotta say, I hated the finale so much. While the first 2 Seasons weren’t the best, it was fine and there were still many good episodes, and the 3rd Season was very good, I loved the premiere and the finale, but then Season 4. The beginning was fine, with Star helping Eclipsa out with working as the ruler of Mewni. But then the end came. Really? Mina as the big villain!? We already had her as a big villain in the Mid 3rd Season finale. And then they made this big twist that Moon was the villain, WHY would she DO that!? She became close to Eclipsa, she was fine with the monsters in Mewni, so WHY! And then they forced all this Starco stuff, and I personally never liked the romantic subplots, it was just to appeal to pre-teen girls so that Disney could get their sitcom viewers to watch their animation. But, the way the look at each other in that barn scene, and the way they just had Star break up with Tom and Marco break up with Kelli, they made them act like jerks! And then, my biggest gripe, the destruction of magic. What the heck. Star literally committed mass genocide. The Magic Council, dead. Spider With a Top Hat and the other spells, dead. My love for this show, lowered by 40%. Not only are many good characters dead, but all the Monsters and Mewmans being mixed in with humans, well, I’m sure many of them died. We literately saw a couple getting chased by a mutant spider. Who knows, what if Jackie died, what if Marco’s family died? And all of this, for Marco and Star to make ou- oh wait, they didn’t even do that for the fans who like the shipping. I guess they ruined the show for casual fans AND hardcore shipping fans. Oh, and to those who are blaming the rushed ending on the corporates at Disney cancelling the show, you’re wrong. The crew of the show planned for it to end at the 4th Season, and they planned for this ending. Wow. If you want a Disney toon that’s really good and doesn’t disappoint, I recommend Gravity Falls, Amphibia, The Owl House, Big Hero 6 The Series, and the Ducktales Reboot.

      Most of season 1, Mercury Filmworks from Canada stood for the animation, with the program Toon Boom which is an evolved version of Flash animation. The shading, the colors, the lighting and the fluid animation and facial expressions looked AMAZING! Now it's done by various studios in South Korea, the same ones that did Gravity Falls. Dear GOD, this video felt like it was reading my damn mind. I really enjoyed season 1 and the very beginning of season 2 when I first watched it, especially the episodes with Toffee and the direction the series was going. But I quickly fell out of watching Season 2 because I simply find the filler less entertaining than Steven Universe. I often see art or interesting characters or story events on my feeds all the time, and there are some great segments, but it feels like the show was built to be more shallow and has stayed that way for the whole run for me. I ESPECIALLY want to thank you for talking about the animation, I felt like I was going crazy when I saw so many slow-moving characters whenever I watched filler and yet found so many good cuts of the show during serious moments. Star Vs. is just the Disney XD version of Steven Universe, I mean think about it. Both have fandoms that dominate Tumblr, both are character/story-driven cartoons, and both somehow have underdeveloped characters outside the main group despite their premise, and both shows have a better, older alternative available from the same network (Gravity Falls and Adventure Time [though I'd argue Gumball as well] respectively). To Star's credit, though, it at least has more consistent animation quality, and I like the fact that Star actually *attempts* to build the world of Mewni, unlike SU where it feels like it goes off and on with trying to build up the Gems and the animation is... well, I'm sure you all know how schizophrenic *that* is.

    • @garjo7131
      @garjo7131 Před 6 lety +38

      I actually think that SU handles it's characters much better because it actually gives you the time to actually know them over the course of several episodes. (The Ronaldo ones are complete trash though) I don't think Star Vs. does that nearly as well. The fact that they put every Earth-centric character on a bus sans a few (Janna, Marco's parents) pretty much proved to me that the writers felt that they really didn't find that aspect of the show was of much importance.

    • @BlythePennyBicycle21

    • @blazingwaters7469
      @blazingwaters7469 Před 6 lety +21

      Garjo Yea, maybe, but even then SU still has its share of problems. I saw a couple of episodes around the later seasons, and I distinctly remember episodes where the focus was on Steven's friends, and the main plot was either about them being stupid and learning a half-assed lesson at the end, or treading the *same exact* problem (an actual one, I should specify) they had like, 5 episodes ago, thus unnecessarily repeating their development. It gets annoying real fast.
      Not to mention I just couldn't care for ANY of the Beach City folks aside from Steven's dad and Connie. For all of SV's problems with its side characters, I can at least say I cared a little bit about a few of them like Marco's friends, Ponyhead, Janna, the parents of both Star and Marco, and Jackie.

      @authoravatar Před 6 lety +11

      I can definitely see why one would you would prefer Star over Steven Universe, that’s totally fine!! They both have heir issues with pacing/extra stuff no one wants, and it seems like the one you prefer depends on your taste and which side characters and main characters you like more.
      However, I would like to say that while I love Gumball to DEATH, it really couldn’t be considered a “superior previous cartoon” to Steven Universe based on their differences alone. Gumball has fantastic background character development and humor, but it’s also a satirical comedy exclusively. It has no serious overarching storyline or worldbuilding like Steven Universe; it does it very well, but uses it for a completely different purpose. I get where you’re coming from, and I could accept an argument that Adventure Time is a better older show (though I hear it has very similar problems too...), but I don’t think Gumball, of all great shows, is comparable to Steven Universe.

    The thing that bothered me the most was that when they did something cool they almost immediately threw it out the window. I was hyped when I saw how Marco became after his 16 year long adventure, he couldn't remember the password for his pc etc and I felt that he would become more interesting and get more developed but nope just back to old Marcoboy.

    One thing that has bugged me at times, is when it seems something is going to possibly be important...and then, they just ignore it.
    A good example is in the St Olga's episode in Season 1. For 10-15 seconds, Star and Marco find themselves in a room with a mural on the ceiling, and symbols on the floor. The music and atmosphere makes us feel, 'this could be important.'
    Plus, the "Starfari" episode to me, was a major, botched storyline that could really have delved further into the monster/mewman divide, but just made it a 'oh, Jelly Goodwell is an expert but is really a kooky old kook' episode. Plus, they had a great chance to develop Buff Frog into his role as Monster Expert. I was expecting some stuff with him and his kids around the castle (maybe River would have to tone down his love of monster-hunting, with Star telling him, 'Dad, that isn't going to fly in the face of changing how we do things around here.'). Instead, we just got Buff saying, 'this didn't work out, all us monsters are just going to leave.
    This series is a lot like that kid you know has the potential to be really great, but he just chooses to meander and take most of his skills for granted. There's so much chance to really focus on drama with Star, but I will admit after Season 3, I'm just feeling 'meh' about alot of this.

      Actually, that scene from the SVTFOE St Olga's episode is foreshadowing the main conflict of S4. I flipped my shit when I found out.

    • @80MWH
      @80MWH Před 6 lety +2

      Is there evidence to back that up, or is this more fan-theories?
      It feels like fan-theories outnumber actual information for upcoming episodes, on a 5-to-1 basis.

      Daron put out some tarot cards to promote the upcoming spell book. On the back of Eclipsa's card is a depiction of her monster husband, and a bunch of demons that match the mural from the St Olga's.

    I’m so tired of these boring, comedy/ relatable, random xD shows wit super similar art styles and the same main character being a dumb powerful innocent cinnamon roll and having a interesting plot but just kicks it to the curve to force development for annoying side characters when they could just integrate their development into the actual plot rather than abruptly stoping it :/

      @Thot, Except Star vs. is NOT is "lol so random show". If you just started on season one, then yes you would think that. But the show becomes more serious and has more lore as time goes on.

  • @eventyraren

    The name of the show when it started production was "Star AND the forces of evil" the studio was the one that change the "and" to " vs". I feel the old one fits with what is going on now.

    • @Autrone
      @Autrone Před 3 lety +1

      You are definitely right there! When Toffee attempted to destroy magic for idk reason, Star stopped him because of "V.S. Forces of Evil" theme! But in the ending, she destroyed magic just because some random maniacal woman decided to lead hundreds of magical gundam metal suits of armor to fulfill her racism goals, which could have been solved in a less catastrophic way.
