    It's simple enough to replace the reg on the board provided the manufacturer will provide the details of the chip so you can source the right one. I've done a few on the happymodel boards, now I ensure I run a suitable cap on all my qauds.

    The sound of the drone is music to my ears! :D While I love music, I don't like flying videos with music. For me music almost always detracts from the video. I almost always mute the sound after a few seconds. I find music to be too distracting.
    Thanks for this one Nate, it's a great video. I love informative videos like this one.

    I think being able to hear the motor sound is a neat thing. Novice and all can learn/compare throttle modulation with superimposing the audio to the flight. Thank you for your great work. The Beta 85 Pro is one of my favorite fliers as well. So thank you again for making that possible. Have a great week. Im looking forward to building a r3d Ion 3" next...

    Tried this...no luck.
    Wired the inputs in, confirmed I got 5V out the back side.
    Wired the 5V input onto the board...then it only reads 0.3-.4V.
    Tried another step-down board just in case something was wrong with the first. Same result.
    Wired 2(!) on just because. Still nothing.
    This is all on a Betafpv 85x.
    I wonder if it just doesn't put out enough amps...?

    Sadly my shutterbug85 build is currently grounded with a blown esc. I've really got to get that one rebuilt, I miss how well it flew for the size. This is a great tip, hopefully it helps people get new life out of damaged equipment. For the question at the end, I'd probably rather hear the sounds from the flight over background music.

    Thanks for this video!! I have a tiny rc boat that I am building. Thought of using a partially disassembled servo as my motor, which should work great as it is both proportional and reversible and hooks right up to the receiver. I was looking for a way to step-down the voltage from a 2s lipo in a small form factor. Servo is really small, so no problems with max current.

    The wolfwhoop 5v regs are the best IMO, they're extremely reliable. I personally like to install external 5v regulators on every 2s AIO board I get (when the internal regulator is intact). That way I know I have a reliable 5v regulator thats not gonna randomly burn out in a flying session. I've also found that caps are not needed when using the wolfwhoop regulator.

Of course waterproofing both the transmitter and the quad. That way if I do get either wet it should be no big deal. And since I live in Arizona the pool is an option all year around and there are some great things to fly around in our pool area! So I have probably every toy grade transmitter you can get. I started selling toy grade drones over 5 years and I broke or lost so many, that I have probably 30 transmitters. And the ones that were supposed to work didn't. Most of the times it's a burned AMS1117 or comparable. Most flight controllers make use of these. They die constantly and are not very forgiving :-/ . But they are cheap and can be easily replaced if you have basic solder skills

    • @michaelreyes8670
      @michaelreyes8670 Před 3 lety

      Using Hot Air Station is considered Basic Soldering skills now? Removing SMD is not easy specially on a crowded compact and dual sided PCB. My 5 cents.

    • @VincentFischer
      @VincentFischer Před 3 lety +1

      @@michaelreyes8670 It's a component of the approx., size of a rice corn. Just blob it in with solder and it can be removed. Not harder then for example removing a smd resistor. If you can solder motor wires to a whoop board this should really be no big deal. It's not a 400 pin BGA chip. As for replacing, it's a SOT323 package that could be soldered to the board by hand with the cheapest iron, really nothing special is required

      If you have a multimeter, you can test the voltage between the 5V pad and GND. Does it show something close to 5V when you plug in a battery? If not, then you have a bad voltage regulator. If voltage is OK, then something else is wrong. Good luck!

    In general, would you recommend using a capacitor for 1s 65mm whoops? I mean we all learned that it helps a lot on our bigger quads. My guess would be that these AIO whoop boards are somehow sensitive for noise as everything is packed very closely together. On the other hand its just 1s and the voltage spikes are

    • @MrShutterBug
      @MrShutterBug  Před 4 lety +1

      Hi. I do not use an extra capacitor on any of my 1s whoops, but I agree that it probably would reduce the chance of blowing the 5V regulator. I've just never tried on a 1S whoop because I use them for competitive racing and every half gram makes a difference you can feel. In general, I think you are most likely to kill the regulator if you are using the maximum voltage that it supports. For example, a 1S battery on a 1S FC, or a 2S battery on a 2S FC. I think the regulator is more likely to survive if you use a lower voltage like 1S battery on a 2S FC, 2S battery on a 4S FC, etc... That has been my impression anyway.
      And no, I do not currently use PMB on my racing whoops, but Patrick Clarke does a great job with those tunes. If it's not working out for you, then I suggest you post a question on the Project Mockingbird official Facebook group. I have an old BF3.5.7 tune that I still use on my racing whoops. I think you can find that attached to some of my 1S whoop videos. Good luck!

    • @MrShutterBug
      @MrShutterBug  Před 3 lety

      There are several possible reasons. When it falls, do all the motors stop? If so you might have a bad power connection. Does it dip out like one motor stopped? If so it might be an ESC overload or an ESC desync. The latter can sometimes be fixed by lowering the blheli startup power, or increasing demagogue compensation to “high”, or by adding a capacitor, or some combination. But... it is hard to know especially without seeing it. I suggest you record a video and post it on one of the big Facebook groups, like the Power Whoop Group. Then people might spot the problem more easily. Good luck.

My friends and I have gone through several on our drones, granted we crashed a lot when we first got them, but they seem to just crap out under normal use. To be exact, when I plug in a battery, a red light comes on, three beeps sound, then a purple(maybe pink) light starts to blink and nothing else happens. The boot up sequence doesn’t finish, the blue/green lights never start flashing. Nothing. I’ve looked online for answers and even called the local drone store but nobody has heard of this particular problem. Is there any chance you can help me figure out the issue?

      @MrShutterBug  Před 3 lety

      It's hard to debug from here, but you could check to see if the problem relates to the 5V regulator by doing the following.
      1) When a battery is connected, use a multimeter to test the voltage between the 5V pad and GND on the flight controller. It should read 5V or something close to it. It may be that the regulator is providing partial voltage (less than 1-4V?) which might be enough to power some of the LEDs but not enough to run everything. That's just a guess, but you could test it with a multimeter.
      2) Another test would be to connect USB to a computer or power supply, and then connect the battery (or try the opposite order). If it beeps correctly when connected to USB then that is another indication that the regulator might be the problem, because USB provides an alternate power source for the FC.
      If the FC appears to have the correct voltage on the 5V pad, then it is hard to guess what could be wrong. I would plug it into betaflight and start testing things. Like can you spin the motors individually? Well, good luck! I hope this helps.

    What happens if I plug a 1s lipo on a quad that is specified for 2s or 2-3s?

    • @MrShutterBug
      @MrShutterBug  Před 3 lety

      If the FC says 2-3S, then I would not expect it to work on 1S. The FC will use 5V for certain functions, including the 5V pads that power accessories. Thus, a 1S FC needs to convert the voltage up to 5V while a 2S FC needs to convert to voltage down to 5V. Those two things require different hardware components. Some FCs have both and can support both 1S and 2S, but others do not.

    I have a mystery for you that I'm kind of desperate to fix. If I plug my battery in I only get the startup power tones like this video but the flight controller is powered. If I were to connect the flight controller with a USB battery then plug in a battery I would get all the tones of course. But if I unplug the USB power bank I can still fly the Drone because the flight controller is still functioning.
    In other words, it seems like my fc is powering up too slowly?
    A little background. There was a crash a while back. It took a week after that for something to smoke. It was the esc from what I can tell and it smells like it too. I replaced the esc, but this delayed start is still here.
    This is a 5 inch quad.
    Any ideas?
    Edit: in fact, if I disconnect and reconnect the battery really fast I'll get all the beeps. It's killing me. I just want to fly!
    I found it seems like the blue light doesn't light up. I'll check the 3.3 volt regulator which is what the fc uses. The 5v is for the accessories on mine

    • @MrShutterBug
      @MrShutterBug  Před rokem +1

      That is mysterious! I've never heard of a quad that required USB to boot up, but did not require it after that. As you said, there could be something delaying the FC boot up. I suppose that is possible, but it is equally possible that something is delaying the ECS boot up. If they do not respond when Betaflight tries to initialize them, then I think the same symptoms could occur. So maybe it is timing related, like you suggested. Or... it is possible that either the FC or the ECSs are browing out during the initial plug-in. I'm not sure what would cause that, but I would be very interested to see a plot of voltage over time. Do you have access to an oscilloscope? If so, you could take a look. If nothing else, I suppose you could use a portable USB power bank to jump start it in the field, or you could rig up a small 5V regulator to feel the USB power inputs from battery. Good luck, whatever you decide to try!

      More clues. Basically, the fc never starts these times. Betaflight doesn't load, no osd, no blue light on the flight controller. It just sits there with the regulators humming away, powering the reciever, but nobody is home. The code doesn't run. Maybe the cpu? Idk.
      I can buy another one. That's not a huge deal, but if it's something small that'll bother me. Maybe it is a regulator just barely out of spec.
      The fc never fails to boot if I blip the quad or plug in with USB. Never ever, so I'll check more power stuff.

      If nothing happens, then you could have a dead 5V regulator like I showed in this video. It is also possible that you could have a problem with your power lead. I would plug in a battery and use a multimeter to test the drone. If the multimeter says the drone has the correct voltage on the VBAT +/- pads, then the power lead is OK. Then I would test a 5V pad. If the multimeter reads 5V between a 5V pad and ground, then the regulator works. If both work, then yes the FC is almost certainly dead. It's hard to guess what could be wrong with the OSD. Did it work previously and then it stopped working? Two common OSD problems are:
      1) If Betaflight is set to use NTSC for the OSD, but the camera is PAL (or visa versa), then you will see the camera picture but no OSD.
      2) If there is a short between the FC's VI (video in) and VO (video out) pads, then the camera signal will bypass the OSD and go straight to the VTX with no OSD.
      If it's neither of those things, then I suggest posting about it on one of the big Facebook groups. If you include pictures or video then someone might be able to spot the issue. Or... maybe the OSD is dead. Hard to know. Good luck.
