  • I describe how to kitbash a cheap way of bluetooth enabling your ID-5100 for use with the Android app. The Ci-V adapter cable is described in chapter 13 of the ID 5100 full manual. The bluetooth module I used is widely available on E-Bay for under $5. The jacks and plugs I used bring the project to under $10, but they can be left out if you desire a more permanent configuration. The original intent of this project was to bring the bluetooth features to the ID-51A,but since Icom locked the features of this app to the 5100, only the DR functions work with the 51A. (Which is still kind of neat to control your HT with a cell phone.) Good Luck!

    I'm about to buy a 5100 today and had budgeted $130 for the bt until I found this video! hunted through my parts boxes and found i have all the bits needed to make a cable like this! You sir saved me $130! Its rather crappy that icom have chosen to sell back to you items like mounting brackets and Bluetooth functionality when this stuff is so cheap to make and should be part of the kit when buying a high end radio. $40 for a main body mounting bracket? seriously its like $1 is sheet metal and paint so i will make my own ;)

      Update: got my radio the other day and I just made one of these cables, I was able to link it and it works just as expected for under $10, In all honesty its 2019 Icom should just build this type of thing into the radio. I get their argument for the main body bracket but the only reason to not include Bluetooth in a high end mobile ham transceiver is to gouge costumers. Its a $4 Bluetooth modal so its got nothing to do with keeping the price of the radio down.

    Hi,
    I got it working with the ID51 Plus using a similar setup. Just change the CI-V address on your ID51+ to the same CI-V address as on ID5100µ. Then select ID5100 in the app. The app will complain but will then let you use all of the features ! :)

    You can also use that USB TTL adapter with the same harness to control your rig on the cheap as well!

    Hi guys i'm a little confused with this video, I would like to make this unit for my id5100 and put it in a small box, however i'm confused as to what the second board is doing, I understand it is powering the unit on the bench, I guess its connected to a pc for the supply, however is this needed when the unit is connected to the radio?, I cannot understand why the second board is really needed???, also is there a circuit diagram available showing the connections more clearly, I would rather work from a drawing than from a video, can anyone help please as i don't want to destroy my rig by not fully understanding whats going on here. thanks chaps.

    I bought a UT-133 module for my ID5100. It was a waste of money. It would not conect to either my Android phone nor my Samsung tablet. It just keeps saying - "can't connect". I have tried everything I can think of. It did connect to my Bluetooth speaker though.

    hi reverend, thanks for your reply to my request, after watching the video again a few times it sank in the the second board was being used as a connection for the power to be taken via a pc usb port "I assume", to make this as a stand alone unit untethered from a PC I'm thinking of using batteries, maybe 3 AAA 1.5v, this would give an undervolt of half a volt, with luck that should still be enough, I'm just wondering how long the batteries would last. anyway thanks for the diagram its been appreciated.

    Great video. Quick question: is there an app, or a way, to remote control the ID5100 in NON-DV modes? E.g. if I want to use regular FM.

      You could use any rig control software. It's straight CI-V. I'm not sure if there is any apps available, but for PC, Log4OM is my choice.

    Dam I just bought a 5100a today and bought the extra bluethooth option and let me tell you I was kicking and screaming forking out the cash for it. Then I get home unpack it all install the board then find this wonderful video. Just think what I said with my inside voice.
    So my question is I have the first model of the id51 and icon tells me I can not bond the bluethooth to make the app work like the 5100a, will your hack allow my version one of the 51a work with the app.

      I haven't tried the newest version of the app with the bluetooth cable and 51a, The old version of the app worked though. Feel free to experiment! Something you can do with the factory bluetooth board you cannot do with this setup is pair that goofy headset they have. This rig only works with the app.

    Hi i have made a few of these for my friends and it works great also many thanks for the diagram, you mention in the video that you have ground down the jack to work with theid51 hand held, i have tried this bluetooth with my id51 but it fails to connect, can you confirm if this works or not with the id51 if itdoes is there a setting in the radio that needs tweaking. Thanks

    Does this Bluetooth module work with the iOS version of the Icom software on the ID-5100?

    • @BlueCollarBachelor

      It should. Bluetooth is bluetooth.

    • @WFTL14
      @WFTL14 Před 3 lety

      @@BlueCollarBachelor I mention that because the UT-133 Icom uses only works with Android devices. It does not work with iOS like the newer UT-137 for the ID-4100 not sure what the difference is.

      EBay for the Bluetooth board. Search for HC06 and make sure it's one with the Breakout board and pin headers. The plugs and sockets are radio shack drawer items. 73!

    Will it work on the ID 51? I made a cable like this and cant connect to my ID 51

    • @BlueCollarBachelor
      @BlueCollarBachelor  Před 10 lety

      The cable will for Ci-V control. You must build the adapter as described in the manual. The android app was just updated, so more experimentation is warranted.
