Holy Hell that coincidence!! Watched another of your videos last night about the 550. I've currently got my 78 CB550 engine stripped down with split cases and rusted con rods. Hopefully your vid might knock a few minutes off the rebuild time :P
Its amazing how people dont give a shit about the things they own sometimes, that poor motor looked like it was owned by Billy Bob, glad you got a hold of it and did a first class build on it.
I have everything off besides the flywheel on a 82' 650sc and the case the will not split for the life of it. Not missing any bolts. The flywheel should be in line with the crankshaft so not sure what is causing it.
Got a Nighthawk 650 85' and my 4th gear doesn't work. 5 and 6 work perfectly. Sadly the mechanic nearby doesn't really want to work on it since the bike is old and he believes a lot of rubbers and smaller components will break when disassembling the engine. So no I drive without a 4th gear :(
Matt, I'm gonna buy this video real soon, gotta do all this and i wanna make sure i do it perfect, one trivial question on this motors build, why go with points? i have this secret ultra hate for points, thats why i ask,lol
I have a 1981 Honda cb400t is there any difference between a cb400 and cb400t? And how much of your 4hr video will cover the bottom end rebuild for this engine?
Hmmm... well I can't afford to buy the "full" video off you, but I've DL'd this and it should be enough to reference on the rebuild... Easier than the greasy old manual lol There's a reason I'm doing the work myself, it's because with 11 bikes, putting them in the workshop would be too expensive ahaha
Hi , if i pay for full video, is it just for streaming or can i download it., need to split cases on my 550 to try and repair faulty transmission [no 3rd gear] cheers Paul
Yea , just got engine out and on bench, just want to be sure all the steps are on video , not split cases before !! all the top end is still intact. i,ll get the vid some time this week i think, i,ll be posting on sohc soon , got engine out on my own , no hoist , using planks and a milk crate !! what a weight . thanks for quick reply
Yeah, that sucker is heavy! The video will help you big time for your trans issue. Your lucky the top end does not have to come apart. Shouldn't be too bad of a job.

Thank you for taking the time to create these video's, they will be an immense help with my rebuild.

Thanks!
Hey Matt excellent video I'm a new subscriber and will also sign up for more very soon.
Dude, that was awesome. Subscribed yesterday, If you ever head to any events up near madison/milwaukee I'd buy you a beer!
Sounds good. I spend a lot of time in WI on weekends. I'm in the dells and east troy quite a bit.
Danke!
Thank you!
Excellent video. Always tough on classics getting parts. Did you consider getting anything machined for it.
Nothing in the bottom end needed to be machined. Now the top end is another story. Haven't assembled yet.

Nothing wrong with points, just require some maintenance every now and then. I have a dyna install on my channel if you want to go that route.
Matt do you have a list of all specialized tools needed for a top and bottom end rebuild?
Yes here: www.howtomotorcyclerepair.com/cb550bottomendrebuild/

This video won't apply to your engine.
Nice quality video. Does this procedure also apply to the '82 650 Nighthawk engine?
90% of the video will pertain to your model.

Good luck with the rebuild, sourcing parts is "fun".
excelente y muy completo., yo estoy restauranda una del 75 igual gracias y saludos desde Mexico
Beautiful!
I paid $10 for the video thru patron as you instructed. How do I get the 4 hour video now?
I sent you a PM with link.
How do you choose which bike to work on? If you take requests, I'd say a 77' xs750. You'd get my patreon support;)
Usually whatever come my way. Check out this vid: www.howtomotorcyclerepair.com/77-xs750-first-start-up/
Do you talk about grease and fluids I will need?
From an assembly standpoint, yes.
Will this help me work on my 1981 honda cb 650rc03? Thank you
Not sure. That model is not to popular around here.
@@HTMR how can I get it? Is there a discount or can you help with a piece of advice if I get stuck somewhere in dismantling process?
@@88nastase I do offer some email support.
@@HTMR ok. I think patreon will do the job, in this case 😁
I want to powder coat my 74 CB550 engine. Do I need to fully disassemble my bottom? I’ve already done so to my top end.
Yes. I have a bottom end video: czcams.com/video/429FEdOQxgw/video.html
Great video! What did you do to clean up the case bolts?
Bought new ones LOL. You can also vapor blast them. Or have them replated.
@@HTMR I was thinking about doing the same thing lol. Wasn't sure if you had some magic bolt cleaning process.
@@ryandrom7094 Some of the bolts were too far gone to restore (stripped threads and heads). Buying new, replating, or vapor blasting is the way to go.
@@HTMR did you buy new oem or hardware store replacements? OEM is like over $150 in bolts.
@@ryandrom7094 New oem. I did buy a polished stainless bolt kit from ebay for $30. Kit includes cover bolts only.
