Cheers y'all, what a crazy ride!
Would you rank Barry with your favorite all time shows?
I think Sally's "was it good?" is bittersweet. After all this time, she's still looking for approval.
Doesn't even say I love you back to her son the first time. She's that focused on pleasing the crowd.
Sally sucks
@@BR-ty3hx Yes. It's because you don't need to seek approval from people who already love you. Very sad.
@@BR-ty3hx more like pleasing herself
The most daring ending to a show I’ve seen. It was impossible to predict and subversive in an extremely intelligent way.
the “oh wow” scene is still one of my favorite and least expected moments of any tv show. like i knew barry would meet his end but the way he died is just perfect in my opinion
The face of defeat Barry makes when he decides he’s gonna turn him self in is peak and probably the scene that hits the most for me. No words needed his face said it all.
Bill Hader really had an extraordinary vision for this show. I'm so glad it actually got made, and I got to watch it, because that was a hell of a unique story.
I can't wait to see how he follows this up. Hader has so much skill, I could see him going the Jordan Peele route or even going completely slapstick and irreverent. We just never know but I'm so glad he's out there doing cool shit.
No-Ho Hank really got the Jesse Pinkman treatment. Was supposed to die in the first season, but ended up becoming one of the most compelling characters in the show.
What a crushing ending. Noho Hank finally standing up and not cowering to the strongest man finally led to what he feared. Fuches saying he was hiding himself as the raven, but he stayed true to who he really was. Barry won and Gene lost. So much to go over omg.
While I agree with alot of that, Barry 100% went to hell. The show references it and alludes to it around a dozen times. So ide say Barry and Gene both lost😭
@@syntheticreality549 I didn't mention it, but this was from an atheist perspective.
@@gnqknight I’m fairly certain Bill Hader is a Christian and he specifically wrote Alot of Hell imagery and mentions in the show. If your talking about yourself I can understand it but for me it just makes perfect sense that Barry ends up in hell.
(That’s the great thing about a great story though, we can get different ideas of how we feel about it✌️)
It's especially funny that Gene of all people kills him because in the pilot episode Barry tells Hank he's never been shot.
I have and its like, super painful
I can't remember the last time I burst to laugh so hard that I started coughing uncontrollably, but I did when I read "buried with full honors". What a mad show. One of the best I've ever seen.
I call my favorite series ever the 3 B’s (breaking bad, better call Saul, Barry) 3 of the best tv shows out there. Also bill hader is working on a horror movie now.
Fuches speech at the end is brilliant. He’s talking about Noho hank and himself. But also all the things that made Barry want to become an actor in the first place 🔥🔥🔥 this damn show is crazy!
"Oh wow"
The first video I saw from you was Barry and it’s bittersweet to see this ending. I love your channel enough to be on Patreon, something I thought I’d never do. Love your reactions and insisights and I can’t wait for the next show
Please watch succession. Please watch succession. Please watch succession. Please watch succession. Please watch succession.
Back when this episode came out, I saw an honest to God comment talking about how Barry was redeemed in his final moments, and how glad he was that he found God in the last years of his life.
And I was ASTOUNDED at this sheer inability to comprehend what the show was doing with religion (It is not critiquing religion, but rather those who play fast and loose with it, or are in it for self-aggrandizement etc). Barry didn't find God in anyway that matters. He just picked it up cuz it made him feel good. And when it got in his way, he was quick to surf Christian podcasts for the one which would tell him that murder is cool lol
He has probably one genuine moment with God this season: When he prays for strength so he could go in and save John so that he can have a long and pious life. BUT THEN he undercuts it by talking about how he wants this so he himself can be washed of all of his sins and take his righteous place in God's kingdom.
This made me laugh so much. That and the "I don't think that's God's plan for me" to Sally lol
And yeah, I don't think Barry was redeemed at the end. Seen a lot of people say this. I am glad tho that at least for ONCE he was ready to do the right thing. But even still, it took him losing his wife and child to finally come to that moment. And I love how that is precisely the moment when he is killed lol.
I feel like people are too quick to throw the word "redemption" around. REAL redemption isn't easy or quick. It isn't just one quick little action after a lifetime of horseshit. Real redemption requires TRULY accepting responsibility and then putting in the work to be and do better. Even then one might not be redeemed in everyone else's eyes. Real redemption is messy. If there's one character who got actual redemption or a genuine shot at it... I feel like it's Sally.
She's not perfect. She is not completely okay at the end, but she is doing better. She still has some of her old ways with her. She doesn't say "I love you" back to her child. BUT from what little we saw of them... I think that there is love there between them. Given Sally's past etc... it's hard for her. What really makes me think this is the fact that despite all that praise from others about her work, she didn't buy it until she heard reassurance from her son. His opinion matters to her. Plus, there was a little interaction with a student whom she told to try again/audition next year which sounded really genuine. So she does care about her students, and is content with what she's doing.
Is she a good mom now? Maybe, maybe not. But she's def much better than she used to be. And while she is living, having accepted what she did (I think that's why she doesn't see that biker's ghost again. That scene of her in the car was absolutely set up to make the viewer think that he might pop up again)... she's got a CHANCE to BE BETTER.
Thank you for this post. Really great analysis.
It was hilariously overt that he didnt find religion, he found an infinite excuse generator and even then had to go shopping for the widest possible interpretation of it to validate his evil selfish actions. If you saw the "bingo" scene just hit the nail on the head as obviously as possible, then "i dont think thats gods plan for me" and walked away thinking Barry found religion, you are dumb as hell lmao.
@@doltonkenway1056 ay thank you :)
In the thick of this series I’d wake up thinking about it lol it’s probably one of the most rewatchable series out there, for me. This was masterful across the board. Acting, Directing, Storytelling and Filmmaking 🖤❤️
I want a NoHo Hank prequel :)
Fr !!!
Barry would've made fun of you in the show for wanting sequels and prequels lol.
@@MamadNobari barry dead he can’t do much now
Hader explained how they decided who lives and dies.
I read it months ago so I dont remember the words perfectly but basically those who accepted who they are lived while those hiding in lies (to themselves) died. Barry in his final moment accepted he was a murderer and realized he indeed had to surrender himself but it was just a little too late for him
Such a crazy finale. It blew my mind I spent like three days afterwards trying to process WTF they'd just given me. They somehow pulled off not only killing their main character, but also finding a way to show how that character's death and the aftermath was perceived by the world. We don't just see the end of our protagonist but we also see the legacy that exists within their universe in a way I haven't really seen other stories (in any kind of media) do.
It was black-comedy gold right up till the end, even if I know PLENTY of people were not happy with the ending. Tough. I was here for it. Glad to see you were too 🤘 Don't hate it for what it ISN'T. Love it for what it IS
As great as it was being a small part of this amazing show, the only drawback was my first time seeing the episodes they were usually out of order and very rough around the edges. I think that's why I enjoy watching the reaction videos for it so much, getting to experience it again for the first time through someone else's eyes. You're really good at these. Thanks for the ride, and keep it up!
Your sound design for this series (however much you helped with it) was phenomenal. Loved the sound of the series.
I've been waiting for this lol! Barry just blew away all my expectations- this is so perfect, wild, insane, and beautiful show. Every character is hilarious and perfectly built. I was yelling "what!?" constantly watching this gem.
Been a blast seeing you experience this show 🙏 You nailed it, picked up on every nuance haha hell yea. Keep up the great work 💙
Happy to hear my friend! Cheers!
Did not expect you to laugh when barry was shot, I was shocked when I watched it. Thanks for the reactions on Barry, it was a good ride
You gotta peep SEVERENCE. Legitimate right up your alley. Great reactions from it too. Very surprising.
Absolutely, phenomenal show.
Definitely some of the most inventive TV I've seen. The writing is phenomenal.
It's an older show (except for Season 3 which came out in 2017) but I'd love to see you hit up TWIN PEAKS. David Lynch of Blue Velvet and Mulholland Drive fame's absolute best work, while it goes through some rough patches in the middle when he and co-creator Mark Frost were less involved there's just no other show that's like it. Surreal, funny, genuinely scary at times, and overall probably the most empathetic approach to the murder mystery genre that's ever been achieved. There's 48 episodes in total including the 18-episode Return season (where Lynch directs every single episode), and a movie between the second and third seasons as well that's required viewing.
I’d love to see James react to all of Twin Peaks! I’d love to see his insight!
Saw a great comparison/contrast of the Barry and Breaking Bad endings, and the "daring-ness" of Barry's ending: In Breaking Bad, Walt - the villain, the bad guy - gets **everything** he wants. He finds a way to get the money to his kids, he saves his old partner, he sees his daughter one last time, he gets to admit his faults to Skyler, he avoids jail - he gets absolutely everything he could ask for, and wins in every meaningful way.
Barry gets nothing - he spends 10 or so years living a husk of his supposed dream life, a clearly unhappy family in the middle of bumf**k nowhere, constantly paranoid that the tiny amount he's got could get taken away at any moment - then his own selfishness causes Sally to finally leave for good, and his directionless rage leads him to the wrong place in search of her, getting him killed. He doesn't get to atone, he doesn't get to fix anything - he straight up "loses" and it's his own fault. We don't get to see our protagonist - that we love so much - save the day or anything like that. The question of "is Barry a good person?" gets answered pretty solidly in these last episodes, and the answer is no. He will do anything to protect his vision of how things should turn out, and ultimately that leads to his unceremonious downfall.
And, imo, it kind of makes the viewer question what they wanted from the story, and question whether that's how things should have turned out. I would have loved for Barry to take out Fuches, save his family, make amends with NoHo Hank etc. etc. whatever - I love the character and I want him to win - but he doesn't deserve a big heroic moment like that, and he doesn't get one. A less satisfying ending than Breaking Bad, but a lot more thought-provoking regarding the stories we tell, I reckon.
In an interview with Bill Hader, he said that the last scene with Fuches, after looking at Barry he was supposed to go into the darkness and cue a sound effect of Ravens flying away but said it was too silly to add. I agree but it would’ve been one of the funniest thing in this show.
You gotta get on ‘The Leftovers’ man!
Such a damn great series! The writing, direction, camera shots… so many scenes have every emotion and jokes/bits you feel bad for laughing at. 10 out of 10 show.
I was riveted watching this the minute it came out. Barry is my favorite show, the one I think will inform my style as a filmmaker the most, and I think they totally nailed the ending. One of my favorite episodes of TV ever.
A proper ending would have them come together, go to The Dave and the Busters, order some jalapeno poppers as a starter, and agree that the killings must stop and become good friends.
THE END
Starting….. NOW
"A man with no heart" saves Barry's son.
Been a joy watching you react to this show, I'm glad you enjoyed it so much. For me it's one of the best shows ever. Thanks James!
i really enjoyed following your viewing of this show, and i’m glad you enjoyed it ❤
They guy who played Barry in the movie at the end has made some very good indie flicks.
I would hightly recommend the films of Jim Cummings. The dude is hilarious, and seeing him make a cameo at the end of this show was one of the most wonderfully surprising things I've seen.
Interesting, when Henry played the Fonz, that show was responsible for the phrase, "jumping the shark", where a series went beyond its' useful life.
Here, Henry's character ends the series before it ran out of ideas, and jumped the shark.
12:16 what's hilarious is that that was Sally's dialogue in season 1 when they did Shakespear lmao
Probably the real reason their son never watched the movie
Wild ending to a wild show. So many great moments: The final shot of No Ho holding Cristobal’s hand was devestating, The Raven saving Barry’s son, and Gene getting his revenge but simultaneously screwing himself and turning Barry into the hero.. Bill Hader is a genius. Been a pleasure watching this show again with you!
Masterpiece of a show!
Tell me Stephen Root isn't one of the most underrated actors in the world. Fuches as The Raven is one of the most compelling TV characters I've ever seen in my life.
Would recommend 'The Player' as a follow up to this, similarly biting satire of Hollywood. Very different in a lot of ways but the ending of Barry reminded me of it
And here we are!!
Thank you for watching this series, so freaking much!!!
NoHo went out like a G.
Finding out what Gene did in taking the fall wrapped up his character perfect for me. I felt a lot of things so deeply in that moment especially respect for Gene, just an amazing ending
Moral of the story is be careful who you trust and never believe a, "based on true events" story out of Hollywood...
Fuchs went through his complete metamorphosis. Earlier he said he was a poser and could not pull the trigger but now he takes it in to his own hands.
better call Saul hype
Maybe I'm wrong, but one thing I notice about the comedy is that it became less loud and more intwined with the drama and suspense. In season 1 and 2, the comedy and the drama were, for the most part, separated. "This is the comedy, now cut to the drama part". But in season 3 and more in season 4, the comedy, drama, and suspense are all in the same scene or scenes. Both Hank's and Barry's death were perfect examples of this. I think most of it worked because it wasn't too overly comedic or dramatic.
Anyone else want James to watch Succession now?
Maybe my favorite show ever
I wish you’d watch The Newsroom next. Seriously underrated show and such good dialogue
They gave Barry the monologue that Sally had in season 1 too.
Masterpiece
Perfection.
Purple Jacket, Pocket Full of Weed.
oh wow
Sally left in the middle night once again, but ultimately saved her son.
Such an insanely good finale. Did this video drop today or a month ago im confused lol.
its dropped earlier for patreon members, was just made public today for everyone. Patreon members got early access
wow
The fake movie is so fucking funny
Sad cos sally was the key to exonerating cousineau and she was too plagued by the past
No way to exonerate for killing Barry
You should watch Ozark next!
I second this
I spend alot of time editing and don't have much time recently so, any support is appreciated 💫☁
Gun buying is not like that..Its satire
Plus it’s supposed to be California. The state with the most gun restrictions. And there’s not a single department store in America that sells guns like that. And definitely not hand guns and large capacity rifles. It was obvious satire. 😂
Also important to note that this episode is set 8(?) years in the future, so theyre making a joke about the direction that this country and gun control laws are headed towards.
This ending despite it's faults is so well done. Barry's death is one of the funniest punchlines in the series. I do wish we had gotten the opening song as soon as he was shot. I think leaving at that would have still been perfect.
Yeah, but still people complained about it being rushed which is a valid criticism of this season and ending. But it would've been worse if we didn't get closure to Gene and Sally and see what happens next especially since they kept time jumping.
u should react to the movie gummo
Plz watch The Leftovers or Hannibal
Me and my homies hate fuches
One thing I like about Barry is that homosexuality is just accepted and totally normalized in the Barry universe. It’s never really made a plot point, just an aspect of the character.
Loved this finale, glad you did too. Last of us though? Cmon...Sopranos? Twin Peaks? So much more juicy stuff than 'last years video game adaptation.'
You say that as if it negates the artistry and work that went into the show. Quit huffing your own farts lol
@@dogman6687 huh? All I'm saying is that there are a near infinite amount more of shows that take precedent over the last of us. It's a fine show, but it is only significant insofar as it's broader connections.
The best thing about the show Barry was that they at least were smart enough to not push beyond 4 seasons. And, now I can look forward to you diving into an actual good series ... Better Call Saul, perhaps?
“an actual good series” lol are you implying Barry is not a good show?
I’m sorry but ending this was a bad tv movie unforgivable and why why wouldn’t sally clear cusonoe name why didn’t he hear Barry start to confess as he entered the room with the gun just so many things I either didn’t like or didn’t make sense to me this season esp this last episode
gene didn’t care about being found innocent anymore, he just wanted to put a final end to barry. he clearly mentally checked out reading those news articles.
He literally was so out of it that he was trying to kill himself, you think he was thinking straight then? Even if he was, I think he would've done it anyway to take revenge for his girlfriend and finally be done with Barry.
If you want characters to act like geniuses, make the best decision every single time, and have the same rational thought as you the viewer who is observing from outside of the story, then you're gonna have a hard time also making sense of hundred other shows and movies.
how could sallly clear cousineau? She wasnt there at the end, she wasnt there for most of it, she only knew what Barry told her, and telling the whole story she knew would have forced her to confront her fears about the person she killed. not to mention Moss & co. had a whole narrative they believed blaming him for being a part of it, she would have had to convince them that the person who killed Barry wasnt responsible for any of it without any firsthand knowledge of what happened between Barry & Cousineau, e.g. even if she told her whole truth it wouldnt be enough to counter the narrative they built.
I mean the whole show at the end was about what we believe about ourselves, but stories need heroes & villains. When Barry died he became a victim and Cousineau became the villain and there was nobody left to tell Barry's whole story bc he lied to everyone around him. So the story was told by Hollywood, poorly, melodramatically.
