    Now after watching your video, my iMac is exactly the same as yours and Now, I have a 16gb ram and an i7 CPU on order (well, i will when i get paid lol) so I'll have 32gb Ram installed and 1TB SSD also installed (Until i get a 4TB SSD) Plus editing directly off of my 1TB External SSD too (which will soon be a 2TB SSD) so I'll be good to go!!!

    I recommend what the dad gum auto co's use is butyl tape. Really it's just bitumen tape.

    It looks like the difference between BR2032 & CR2032 is that BR2032's work in a higher temperature range & don't lose energy as fast when not being used. I think it's a toss-up if the current BR2032 or a new CR2032 would fail sooner(it would depend on how high the temperature got & how much energy is left in the BR2032).

      Ah, interesting. I didn't risk it though haha. The last thing I want is that the Mac doesn't boot because of a wrong CMOS battery once it's all together.

    Hi Lads a few questions ... 1) I did not see any mention of a thermal sensor for the HD? is it required on the 21.5"? ... 2) Does the i7 run hot under pressure and where did you purchase the processor?

      The smaller hard drives don't have a thermal sensor, so there is none. The i7 was also available from Apple, but I recommend using a Fan control program to get better temperatures (but that I can say for almost all Macs actually). I bought it from Aliexpress.

    If you use Mac OS and a third party ssd, then go in terminal and enable trim with this command: sudo trimforce enable

    Another question: About the CPU you choose to use. I have a late 2013 Imac 21.5. Is this the last CPU (I7-3770s) I can use, or is there a better I7 i can use? Sorry bothering you...

      As far as I know, no, there isn't a better one you can use in the 21.5" Late 2012.

    Great Video. One thing you may need to know. When you swap a HDD to A SSD sometimes you
    may need to set your PRAM. This will help on slow bootup. Give it a try. Almost a must when doing
    older MACs.

      Hi, we used the iMac 21.5" Adhesive Strips from iFixit. That set also included the cutting wheel, which was very helpful to remove ths monitor.

    I have your same imac. I upgraded samsung 870 evo 1TB (the best ssd, same CPU and 16gb ddr3 1600. Cinebench r23 has: 3614 pts multicore, 762 pts singlecore. With samsung ssd i have a little higher performance

    Hi, i have a late 2013 iMac with the i5 4570R running at 2.7Ghz, 4 cores and 4 threads. can i upgrade to the i7 3770s Processor ? you might wonder why i would wanna do that, well, the 3770s have 8 threads instead of the i5 having just 4, it would be a significant upgrade. i already did the 16GB ram upgrade and SSD upgrade some years ago.. thanks..

      Sounds like a RAM problem to me. It is either not seated correctly, broken or (most likely) incompatible.

    Very good video! I have a question: How did you do to the computer starts mac OS system, even after changing the HDD to SSD? Cloning the HDD on SSD, maybe...

      Yes, I cloned it using SuperDuper. Worked great! Only had to do a PRAM reset to make it boot faster from the internal SSD afterwards.

    I have done the SSD and Ram upgrade on the same iMac like three years ago. Would you say it’s worth upgrading the CPU to the i7 if it costs $40 USD?

      If you don't mind the work, yes. The i7 is a Quad-Core CPU, that makes definetely a difference.

      Haha no, you can't install a ryzen into an iMac I'm afraid.

    hello great video i just wanted to ask you if its worth upgrading only the ram and maybe putting an ssd and using my 2012 imac for gaming i dont have the money to buy a new gaming pc/ laptop so was wondering if i should do it ?

      It really depends if you wan to put the work into it. But SSD is always a great upgrade. Will make it MUCH faster. But don't forget to replace the adhesive strips when re-assembling, the original glue won't hold the display as securely anymore.

      Ebay is a good place to get the stuff. I can strongly recommend the iFixit adhesive kit though, it worked really good.

    One question I have iMac Late 2012 (13.1) / 2.7 GHz Intel Core i5 / NVIDIA GeForce GT 640M 512 MB, can I put the i7-3770s and i7-3770k processor on it? either of the 2 supports them or it must be a specific one, which one can be placed greatly influences whether it is K or S Thanks

      It's important that you go for the "S" because the "K" doesn't work in these iMacs.

    Does i7 3770K work for iMac 21.5-inch late 2012 (core i5 3330s 2.7 ghz)?
    Because someone told me K version is not supported and as a result I need i7 3770s for upgrade?
    Is it true?

      You'll need the 3770s, because Apple never offered the "k". People had some luck with other CPUs in Macs but in most cases, i'd even say 95%, it won't work.

      Haha if you really lost 200€ inside the machine it's easily worth it to open it up again, but I think you meant 4 times 50 cents maybe? Then, well I'm not sure. This model was shipped with a i7 and HDD, that's why we upgraded it. Hardly anyone even went for the i7, most of them are i5's. We are actually from Austria, therefore the accents.

    Moin! kann ich bei einem iMac 27" late 2012, das display aus und wieder einbauen, obwohl es einen riss hat? oder reisse ich das Display dann komplett kaputt?
    Ein neues DIsplay kostet 500 okken, das wäre mir zu viel, die Cpu tauschen würde sich noch lohnen denke ich.

      Hi, ich denke wenn der Display jetzt noch mit dem Riss funktioniert und du beim Ausbau aufpasst, sollte das ganze kein Problem sein.

      please do not push the cutter into the crack too deeply because it can permanently damage some parts of the image on the lcd display.

    apparently if the cutter is pressed in too deeply it can cause damage to sections of the display area on the screen.

      @@jaycool5978 pressing the cutter against the edges of the screen, at least along the horizontal edges, frequently kills an adjacent vertical strip of LCD of varying widths depending on the severity of the injury. the result is a vertical blacked out strip running from top to bottom but with the LED lighting still seen to be illuminating, from the top and bottom edges, the now dead strip/s of LCD screen information.

    there is a slot for a smaller ssd on the motherboard. why did you not use this?

      This type of SSD is much more expensive and also it being a Mac you never know if it will be compatible. You might need a OEM one or an adapter. So I went with the normal SATA SSD, it's cheaper and I don't have to worry.

      I'm afraid the official support already stopped at Catalina :( But you can hack it to run Big Sur and it's not too hard.

      I don't have this computer myself anymore but a friend still uses it in his business to this day and it still works good and fast! It still runs Catalina, but you can patch later versions on it with not too much trouble. Check out OpenCoreLegacyPatcher for Mac OS.

Thanks for getting back to me and I think the OpenCoreLegacyPatcher would be worth trying out without doing any hardware upgrades. If it doesn't work then time to upgrade computers.

      There is no good working hack out there for Big sur (yet). You'll have to upgrade it to a Metal capable GPU if you want to run Mojave and later.

      Try the big sur patch from Ben (google it)...I just made an upgrade 2 days ago it worked. Just use the kex patch after install to have the wifi work. I have it on my late 2012, 21.5” iMac 😊

      I would say definetely if you don't mind the work; a Quad-Core CPU is much more futureproof than a Dual Core.

      @@MacintoshMen But already i5 processor in the iMac is quad core, just the difference was i5 to i7 - what do you think? may be I was wrong.
      I have already upgraded my SSD within my 2012 model iMac.
      Plus I have installed NVMe SSD with adapter within the iMac but that experiment failed for me :)
      I am just concern about i5 to i7 processor upgrade and advantage of it.
      and the last point, you both guys are cool and sharp minded, I was just seeing past of Bill Gates in you :)

      @@siddharthtrivedi3322 Oh, if you already have a Quad-Core then the leap is not going to be that big, but those older i7s are cheap to come by so, again, if you don't mind the extra work I'd say go for it. And thanks for your kind words!

    Would a regular Intel I7 3770 work or do I have to use the 3770s?

      No it has to be the 3770s. With other types of CPUs the computer just doesn't boot because of.. well Apple.

      I cannot confirm this. I just upgraded my 2012 21.5 iMac from an 3330s to a 3770 (non-K). The 3330s is a 65W CPU, whereas the 3770 is a 77W CPU. From the first tests, it works flawlessly. However, the difference is only 12W, so the system should be able to cope with the little extra heat. A little disappointment is that my model does not have a PCIE port, so I have to put up with a SATA SSD.

      Only the i7 models have that port unfortunately. The 2.7 i5 versions (such as this we upgraded here) don't have a slot.

      I have a late 2012 i7 top of the line. What’s the highest cpu that can be installed And what’s your thoughts on the old ddr 3 ram in these machines vs the modern 3200 ddr4 that is now most common. (Is that ram speed noticeable in the real world ? ) mine is maxed out i believe at 16gb. Thanks guys. Great job!

      @@LemonmilkMusic Yes, this is the highest CPU than can be installed in it. Also about the RAM, I think in real world usage it makes very little difference for the end user since those who really need DDR4 speeds probably won't use such older hardware anymore. For most people it's plenty fast. I use in my main PC 24 GB of "slow" 1600 MHz DDR3 RAM and I never had the desire that it needed to be any faster.

      @@MacintoshMen Your model has the slot. But its not referred to a M.2 slot as apple uses proprietary slots for the blade ssd. The slot is located above the USB ports seen at 19:14

      I wouldn't risk it. Macs are known to be very picky when it comes to CPU upgrades. There is a big chance of it not working.

      The GPU is not upgradable. It's soldered in, nothing you can do. And no, you can't put in the "K" CPU, it won't boot with it. Only the 3770S works; that's Apple for you.

      @@MacintoshMen I cannot confirm this. I just upgraded my 2012 21.5 iMac from an 3330s to a 3770 (non-K). The 3330s is a 65W CPU, whereas the 3770 is a 77W CPU. From the first tests, it works flawlessly. However, the difference is only 12W, so the system should be able to cope with the little extra heat. A little disappointment is that my model does not have a PCIE port, so I have to put up with a SATA SSD.

    I have a Intel Core i5-3330S (SR0RR) 2.70GHz Processor in mine. Will a I7-3770S (SR0PN) 3.4GHz work or will that be too hot for? I'm still learning and don't want to buy the wrong one. Could you be a little specific on that please. Some SR0PN states they are Ivy Bridge and others don't. Thank You and I enjoy your work!

      Yes, i7 3770s works fine, Apple also offered it from factory. So all good.

      @@d0805446 I did a little research and some cat said on reddit that you don't need to. The card that comes installed with is good enough otherwise you'd be overheating your MB and/or have screen issues within time. So basically, mine isn't as fast as my 2020 but it streams the internet quick enough to watch netflix, disney+ etc.

      What do you mean, unplugging the cables and such? Yeah, we probably could have set up the camera in a different angle but at the time both of us were only figuring how to remove the display for the first time. Unfortunately, we focused more on this than on the camera. Sorry about that.

      2021 imacs with apples sylicon chip are not upgradable , All prev imacs from 2009 on are upgradable .

      These models are not considered “USER” upgradable, as it requires cutting seals and adhesives, and major disassembly… most computer USERS are not comfortable cutting and disassembling their $$$ iMac$ to such a degree 😎… it’s more a ‘nerd’ thing 🥸
      27” iMacs have a ‘hatch’ just above the power connector, allowing fairly easy access to the !FOUR! Mem slots.
      I say ‘fairly easy’, because the stand is in the way 🤪.. it’s an ‘Apple’ thing, doncha-know….

    Honestly, the backwards CPU thing annoys me. I'd argue it was maybe to keep the heat from the CPU and GPU off the back of the LCD panel. But the 2010 imac had the cpu and GPU facing the right way and they flipped the boards in the 2011 revison so its probably Apple just being dicks.

      @@MacintoshMen Is it? Maybe I'm confusing the GPU. I know on the 2010 One of the chips is front facing. Its the reason I killed my 2011 imac trying to replace the already dead radion GPU. In the end I bought a mac pro from 2008 and maxed it out. Much better machine to work on :)

      And don't get me started on upgrading ARM macs even if they are looking good performance wise

      @@willm5032 Yeah, I think you meant the GPU, on the 2010s you can take it out without removing the entire motherboard. And upgrading ARM Macs? Haha, would be cool. I fear that all the Macs wil lin future just become sort of iPads/iPhones. Once too slow, you have to replace it. Hopefully they don't butcher the Mac Pro again when it switches to ARM.

Haha it really would- they cite the Chip architecture as the reason but I bet they're happy people can't upgrade. That said, if people do have to upgrade, the used market will be great- or apple will die on its ass because people migrate to upgradable machines... They won't touch the pro- its used too much in the TV and film indistries and music industry. Thats like their only market for the pro and they'd 100% dump apple if they ruined the modular design!
