  • In 2004, a new series was released on the new TV Channel Star One that would go down in history as one of the cult classic sitcoms from Hindi serials - Sarabhai vs Sarabhai.
This show is still so relevant today in the form of cultural references, memes, imagery and jokes - one might not believe that when it was first released, there wasn't much viewership for it.
In this video we deep dive into why this show became such an icon and what is so unique about it - welcome on a journey of comedy, humour, philosophy and a lot of nerding out to another India in Pixels video essay.

They even talked about homosexuality back in 2005. There is an episode where Indravadan asks Rosesh if he is gay and tells him that he dont have any issue even if Rosesh is gay. Even today Indian tv shows dont dare to openly talk about homosexuality and that too in a positive manner. Hats off to the channel and the makers of the show. ✌🏻❤🙏🏻

When I watched at first I was 12 and many jokes bounced my head after many years at rewatching I find this show way more progressive than any show currently running in our tv there are so many taboo topic they touched on this show be it infidelity, homosexuality, sexual tensions of married couple etc plus there is an episode where Maya asking sahil to open up to his sex life problem this so surprising they managed to make it happen because to this day tv shows are scared to about sex in there show while this is openly talking about it .

I'm 16, Gujarati and from Mumbai. This show really made every distinction between south Mumbai and the north clear. Maya talks about Nachos, foreign schools and Chihuahua in 2002 while all these things came down to suburbs not until 2011 - 12. Really showed the wealth structure well

JD Majethia, Deven Bhojani, Aatish Kapadia, all of these stem from Gujarati drama circles whose audience was the business owning South Bombay community and believe me, satire runs in thy veins. It's a part of everyday life and older Guj dramas are nothing but satire and seeing something relatable after the moral policing was soothing

Now just imagine the difference in status was so vast that within an urban City like Mumbai the concept of as you said nachos even vegan and falafel came through a serial which is nearly two decades old. How could a two tier let alone third tier city understand the presentation of such an elite class family? This sitcom failed because the majority of the audience did not understand the concept to begin with. No wonder why ekta kapoor has had the upper hand all these years.

Some interesting observations I made from the show :
    1. Monisha is Punjabi. So is Baldev & Swaroopa (Indian cultural association members, who have a dog named deepender). I think this was deliberately done to ensure the show doesn't turn into a Punjabi vs Gujarati rivalry.
    2. Maya's NRI sister Nayeesha (also played by Sahil) marries Monisha's cousin. Same reason as #1. This is a reverse of Monisha & Sahil in terms of inter-class love, making it very balanced and progressive!
    2. Saas-bahu dynamics of Maya & Monisha is similar to what Maya had with Indravardhan's mother.

Their third show Baa bahoo and baby is the only indian soap my family watched from first episode to last. Because it was so relatable, only indian show where everyone worked (lic agent, shopkeeper, doctor, call center etc ). Just like most middle class family of early 2000s that family struggled through poverty in 70s 80s and climbed its way to well to do middle class. Best was Bahoos, eldest was beautiful daughter of rich man married to boring lic agent, one was from such a poor family that middle class family accepting her was a big deal. It was such a beautiful story of joint family coping through clashes and most importantly through economic and personality difference between different members of same family.

This show was relatable to the upper class people...half the jokes require english understanding and understanding of society's hypocrisy...These types of shows are good quality wise but cant reach wider audiences like tmkoc, which are bad quality wise. But this show also had regular comedy which even kids like me used to get and love.

Im still watching those 70 episodes again and again. I think this is the best Indian show of all time. Most of the shows I loved are dubbed but not this one. Purely made in india. Not a single line of Maya is repeated. I can't even make one line of Mayas wit on my own and they made all so good that you can't choose which episode is better than other. Also what I've observed that in order to truly appreciate this show and it's humour you have to have the idea of both worlds. Like you must know about all those words and culture of upper class but also must be grounded and truly "desi" inside.
