    I am 85 years old - and workout by myself - and have a smith machine because It is safer for me under the circumstances. My smith machine is something I bought in the LAST century, and it too has tradeoffs, but at least I can still workout. If has been a long time that I needed a 400 pound barbell - but then I am not going to be competing in this century

    • @garretthohn
      @garretthohn Před 4 měsíci +1

      I’ve been wondering while eyeing this machine from a far… is there any reason why one couldn’t flip the smith machine around and have it face the back upright? Just trying to see what some customizing options are.
      Also, ritfit’s rep couldn’t give me an answer but when the smith bar is at the very top in the locked position, how much space is between it and the floor? I’m wondering if I could walk under it? Thanks a bunch!

    • @zain_kolsy
      @zain_kolsy Před 4 měsíci +2

      @@garretthohn I wanted to flip the smith upside down and I asked them the same thing, and they couldn't answer, so I just bought it and did it. I wanted the Smith to be able to go lower for hip thrusts. With the Smith flipped upside down, the highest locked position leaves the Smith machine bar at about 61" but now at the bottom, with the safety arms dropped to the floor (I also removed one of the rubber stoppers since it had 2 stacked on each side) the bar now goes 11" from the ground.
      Even before flipping the Smith, you couldn't freely walk under it, and I couldn't really do any overhead presses so flipping it increased functionality and didn't reduce any stability or anything. Definitely would recommend doing that!
      As for attaching it towards the back of the rack, you can do it, but it will likely get in the way of the plate storage. Also, you won't be able to put the rack up against the wall because you won't be able to position yourself under the bar to do a lot of movements

    • @garretthohn
      @garretthohn Před 4 měsíci +1

      @@zain_kolsyPhenomenal response! This answers so many questions.
      For a little clarification, if I were to put the smith in the back of the rack, I'd split up the weight storage. Two pegs in the back, two pegs of plates in the front. I need to be a foot or two away from a wall anyways (mirrors). It's good to know what you can't walk under the bar in the stowed position up high. I figure with the bar tucked in the back, it would become much less of an issue.
      I've got another question for you. Are you happy with the quality and glide of the Smith attachment in general? I'll be honest, it's about 75 percent of the reason I'd go with this setup. There aren't that many smith + cage options (without lat pull down -- I'm gonna get a separate cable pulley tower for that to spread out the gym) on the market. Thank you so much!

    • @zain_kolsy
      @zain_kolsy Před 4 měsíci +2

      @@garretthohn I'm glad to help!! The weight storage may get in the way on the front side when you're doing squats and things on the front side of the rack though, so take that into consideration
      I love it, honestly the quality is better than I expected! The Smith glides smooth (it's not counter balanced, but a very light starting weight so my wife has no issues with it). I got it because of how compact it is, I didn't want any pulleys since I have a separate lat pulldown as well as a functional trainer. Although I'm using a full 2 car garage, with all the equipment I have I'm starting to get tight on space so I went with this. Rack works well (considering the posts are 2x2), I've benched and squated using it, no issues with the j cups or safety spotter arms (didn't load it super heavy, but 225+). I've used the Smith with up to about 285, had no issues with it! It has a little sway side to side but that's only if you deliberately rock it side to side, when I just it for hip thrusts and stuff, it's smooth!

    • @garretthohn
      @garretthohn Před 4 měsíci +1

      Thanks again for the response and good points. I can punch 1 inch holes into the uprights to drop the plate storage just an inch or two above the ground as to not interfere with deep squats so no issues there.
      Are the uprights a true 2x2 i.e do rack attachments fit the way they should? Cheers 🍻

      And this is exactly why you don't want a friction system for a smith machine. If you touch it, you are greasy and have to re-grease the pole. If you have pets, their hair gets stuck on the grease. If your girl uses it, hair in the grease.

Has smith, uprights for barbell standouts, two cable pulleys for weights (not weight stack), pullup bar, and some storage hooks for weights and attachments. I purchased this right after the holidays. I have a gym membership, but I wanted something for my home gym that I could lift heavier with at home that is safer than my squat rack. Also, my son has expressed an interest in starting to lift, and I thought this would be ideal for him to start with since he is too shy to go to the gym. I have been happy with it so far. The pulley system is smooth. It does take 2 people to put it together, but it is not difficult and takes maybe 1.5 to 2 hours...thanks for the review!

    I feel like there is a perfect world where this costs like an extra $100, but instead of separate weight pegs for your smith bar and lat pulldown, the smith bar is attached through cables in the guide rods, which may not be a massive reduction in physical width, but you’d save a ton of space not needing room on either side to load weight

The mini is about 1.5 inches longer but it will change the load i am able put on the smith part of the machine for squats. Keep in mind if you go that route to overload it you will have to either weight the back down and maybe add more plates to the plates to the lat pulldown depending on how much you are trying yo push it to. You will also have to remove the sleeves from the midas bar to install it. The midas mini is also on sale right now for 187.

    Hey Coop! I went down the rabbit hole with Smith Machines for a while. I was going to get the Bulletproof VTS but they teased it for so long I eventually gave up. Somehow I lucked into the Black November Eleiko sale - they had their Prestera Smith Attachment marked down to a fifth of the price. They then tried to pull the rug out and say it was a mistake and they could do the attachment without a bar. I eventually got them to throw in the bar for a little bit more. All I can say is that I am supremely happy - the Eleiko Prestera Smith Attachment fits right into my REP PR-5000 rack just behind my Athena Functional Trainer (I’m using an 8-post rack with a 41” deep section for squats and bench, then a 16” section for the smith machine, then a 16” section for the Athena). Not only is it awesome for me, but now the kids, wife, and friends come over non-stop to use my gym (which I did not expect but it’s pretty cool). Everyone loves the combo of the Athena up front and then Eleiko Smith behind.

      The price they had listed when they showed prices was $3,700. The Black November price they listed as $700. Then they tried to say it was a mistake and it didn't have a bar. After haggling a while (they wanted to cancel the order and return my money) they wound up selling me the bar for the Smith Attachment for $700. So it wound up being $1,400 total - more than I felt I should have paid due to the situation. However, it fit into my 93' tall Rep PR-5000 perfectly and it is ridiculously nice. So I am very happy with the purchase now. @@user-ii7uk3fm3l

    Once Rep comes out with a smith machine attachment I’m all in with them. Until then, staying with my cheapo ForceUSA stuff. Most hate on the smith but it has soo many uses for me and my wife that it has become invaluable. In my younger days, heavy barbell work is awesome. But where I’m at in life now, a smith is preferred.

    Great video as usual. Can you do a video or a series that talks about what makes any given piece of equipment good, better, best and how much it affects the quality of the machine. You kind of touch on it when you do product reviews like in this one you mentioned the bushings vs bearings, and you showed the bushings. It would be awesome to have a video or series that went into detail about various "decisions" manufacturers make with their equipment quality. Like you didn't really go into detail about bearings on this one and how each of them differently affect the movement of the Smith Machine. I imagine the bushings allow for a back and forth motion instead of completely transferring your movement into up and down. I've been lifting for a long time and I know there are different pulley systems, and I can tell if it's crap when I use it, but I can't tell if it's going to be smooth by looking at it. Most of us are making decisions based on your videos and pictures. Really appreciate everything that your channel creates. Thank you.

    Calling it 2mm steel IS simpler than calling it 14 guage. Guage is a stupid measurement. 99 percent of the world uses metric and millimetres and Amazon products are available in 99 percent of the world so they are just catering to their largest audience when using millimetres. Get with the program America!
