its because it was recorded in the same Era, early 90's this sound was their early days, still the vocals over the harsh guitar crunch is 100% deftones.

are the A and B - or as i thought back in the 90s Linus and (like)Linus differences very subtle? i dont notice much just sounds like they recorded it twice.

It wasn't! This is just Deftones first demo tape. Most of these songs are still played live, they just never made it on any of the records.
None of these songs are played live anymore, except for 'Root', '7 Words' and 'Engine No.9', which were later re-recorded for 'Adrenaline'.
